Good move tbh. Although the modern game has more or less killed off atmospheres. Big games aside of course. We've wanted this rectified for a while but been largely ignored by FSG.

Hopefully the fans take it as Mourinho speaking on their behalf. Plenty can still be done to improve the atmosphere.

Hope it improves. Not getting my hopes up though.

Although banning people that try to flog munich mementos on eBay would be a nice start.

That prompted a response from the Manchester United Supporters’ Trust, which pinned most of the blame on the lack of “supporter ownership and engagement” under the Glazer regime.
MUST really can't help themselves from having a dig can they?
United’s ticketing and marketing strategy operations manager, Chris Moss, admitted at a fans’ meeting in November that the atmosphere at Old Trafford “could be improved”.

A club spokesman said: “We are always open to a discussion on this matter. We look forward to hearing the ideas brought to the next fans’ forum but it is important to note that any solution must be fan-led, and that moving people out of seats they have held for many years is fraught with problems.”
I mean this line alone contradicts that silly claim. There's been more fan/board-engagement over the past few seasons under the Glazers than in any other point in our modern history and there probably would have been more if MUST hadn't spent the first few year of their reign peddling myths about our impending death. Personally I can't see things changing any time soon largely due to the line about moving supporters – there's a huge subsection of old fogeys who are taking up a lot of good seats in the North and South Stands who absolutely refuse to let anyone around them stand up or sing and until they're gone, I'm afraid we're fecked on the atmosphere front.

I don't know what the seating distribution is like these days but they should designate the Stretford End a singing adults section in the front two thirds, and families back third like it was years ago.

Safe standing areas... move the away fans to tier 3 of the north stand... reduce the prices.

Unfortunately none of this will happen.

Stop the family friendly crap and the atmosphere will improve. We want to see passion, opposition players and fans intimidated by the atmosphere and these kinds of things!

How would reducing the prices help? Three quarters of the people are season ticket holders who've been going for years, will the reduction in prices make em cheer against Huddersfield? I really doubt it.

I figure it might encourage more season ticket holders to turn up week in and week out rather than selling their tickets on to the games they don’t fancy so much and recouping their money...

I sit in an area of all season ticket holders yet there are still so many new faces around me at every game.

Isn't there already a safe standing zone? Certainly was when I was last there in the UCL

We need real solutions but things that clearly won't work or clearly aren't ever going to happen. Singing sections and safe standing fall under each category respectively.

No, unfortunately not... although there are certain areas in the ground where the stewards will let fans stand or turn a blind eye to it at least.

That's what I thought was going on when we kept being told to sit down but the section next to us was left to do what they wanted :(

when is the new disabled section kicking in? that will make things worse
Already has to some extent. They have built an additional section behind the goal on the east stand which was visible against Huddersfield. If i remember correctly it would stretch out over all the lower sections when its completed.

It's not the modern game though. It's the UK and the clubs in it. I've been in some great atmospheres watching what would otherwise be no mark games, in Europe (don't mean United in Europe, although I'm sure that's better than at OT etc still). Maybe British blokes can't be trusted with beer and standing inside the stadium though.

Isn’t there a new rule that states away fans need to be on the lower tier now? I’m not sure where I read it. Where have the away fans at Newcastle for example been lately?

Its a nothing article.

Mourinho’s comments have been placed on the agenda at the next fans’ forum, which is routinely attended by senior figures at the club, including managing director Richard Arnold.

They're not even sure who will even be there. Its nonsense.

Has the thought ever crossed Jose's mind that maybe, just maybe he is at least partly to blame.

Yeah, I’ve just read that myself but was previously unaware... thought it was allowed because of my experience at Newcastle!

Newcastle apparently have been allowed to keep away fans up in the clouds for this season as they’ve argued it’s for security reasons.

On TV, when it's a home game, I mostly hear away fans singing, but when it's an away game, I hear songs from our fans all the time.

But we should certainly do something. Most if not all of teams in MLS do have some supporter groups that stand and sing the whole game. This really helps with the home team atmosphere. I don't expect 70K fans just go crazy by themselves all the time.

The suggestion was more about getting our fans in that corner where the away fans are currently located because the sound travels well from there... I’d prefer it if our fans benefit from that over the away team.

Yeah I should have clarified I meant in the Premier league. Some cracking stadiums and fans in Europe.

There is going to have to be a change regarding singing sections.. There is just to much space between them .. Last time I was there in the North stand any attempt to start some singing faded away after couple of seconds. . As there is nothing planned or worked out..

The reason our away fans are so good is because they are all packed together and came with that purpose of singing ..

The wife and I have been planning an anniversary trip to England. Because the atmosphere can seem drab (on TV) compared to what we want, we've mulled the idea of going during the fixture congestion to catch United away a few times and only go to Old Trafford once.

On a side note, Portsmouth was the first club to catch my attention when I first started following the EPL. It was the atmosphere at Fratton Park that did it. Eventually I fell in love with United and picked the club as the one I'd support.

Gotta say that Old Trafford was so much more imposing then than it is now. Granted a lot of that came down to the quality of the football and the momentum of the time, but Old Trafford seemed so imposing. There was a palatable sense of expectation raining down from the crowd. It was like the result wasn't in question, and the only thing was when the winning goal would go in. Even through TV to a novice follower, it was obvious how it affected the game on the pitch. I miss that so much. I hope the club does whatever it takes to bring that back, because that was truly special.

Sorry but this is a large exaggeration. This imposing atmosphere you talk about was only ever in the big games in recent memory. If the on-pitch success returns, then so will that imposing atmosphere for the big ones. OT can still rock when it can be arsed but that's even more unlikely at the moment than it was around those times obviously.

You could call it an exaggeration if I were there in the stands year after year contending this.

Through the limited prism I've had to follow the club, what I say is fair. The slow decline in the atmosphere for run of the mill games has been obvious to all. It's a frequent topic on here and podcasts. Yes, the the big game atmosphere has always been different than run of the mill games, but that's everywhere. The difference is stark when it comes to teams further down the league and the winning goal isn't in the back of the net. There was a way that the crowd seemed to get involved that you just don't see right now.

I've heard foreign fans that don't know the songs and are too busy taking it all in. I've heard it comes to the working class being priced out. I've heard the lack of standing. I've heard a lot of reasons. I'll defer to the season ticket holders to say what all drives it, but it's obvious to just about everyone everywhere that the atmosphere as noticibly slipped.

These issues date back to SAF time in charge and as far back as Keane "prawn sandwiches brigade" rant during his time. It is not a new issue and IMO is partly down to the layout of the stadium as well as the actual atmosphere and clientele we attract.

You have clearly no idea what you are talking about and just looking to take a dig at Jose at every possible opportunity. Old Trafford has been a library countless of times under SAF, just so you know.

I think that the people attending football nowadays generally care less than they would in the past. People have far more competing interests in the age of the Internet. There was a time when for most match-attending fans, going to the football would be the highlight of the week, the cornerstone of your social calendar. For most middle class people, it is just another piece of entertainment. Something else to consume and document through social media and selfies. I have lots of other interests, but going to the football, walking to the stadium through the streets of ex-council houses, is the thing I love most about living in Manchester. I genuinely care and am always hurt when United lose, but, honestly, most other people I know who support United are kind of indifferent to being a fan nowadays. They'll jump on the train during the good times, and tune out during the leaner times.

People always suggest lowering prices to get more young people in, but the majority of young people around me in the Stretford End are the ones who never really sing and chant. Short of carving out a tifosi/ultra section in the stadium in the medium term, I'm not sure you are ever going to get a proper, consistent atmosphere back. Modern football is not conducive to this though. The Premier League is built around a sanitised global product where your worth directly correlates to the amount you are willing to spend. Global is the new local. Is it any wonder that many of the best atmospheres are in provincial locations, both domestically and on the continent, where clubs are still the primary representative and focus of the town or city?

My thoughts and solutions on the matter are not entirely clear, but the "problem" (if there even is one depending on whose perspective you look from) is only going to get worse until this era of football shifts.

That night against Real Madrid was a reminder of how all of our UCL game atmospheres used to be, especially in the 90s.
