Sometimes i watch Messi and i think there is no mentality inside him. Just an incredible talented footballer.

How different? I mean winning Euros works in Ronaldo's favor in the debate doesn't it?
For me, it does matter since I always say being part of winning teams should improve your status as a player, but it's not really significant enough.

The way I see it team results should only be a very small part of how you judge a player, their influence on those results is a lot more important. Obviously if Messi scores an hattrick every game and Argentina win the WC it won't be the same as if Messi plays 1 minute, gets injured and Argentina win the WC.

It's unfortunate for Messi because any other generation I feel he would have been the GOAT.:wenger:
If Ronaldo didn't exist, and Higuain was playing for Real Madrid and scoring at Napoli rate, most people would have a debate of Higuain vs Messi.

It's just where clubs like Real Madrid put players, it was Robinho vs Messi first, and then Robben vs Messi, there's always a excuse to lit a fire under the eternal rival, remember the Euro Xavi had in 2008?. Well, people were claiming injustice after the list because Guti deserved it more than Xavi, it was a hot topic for months before the Euro.

I guess that goes for Ronaldo and 2016 Euros then?

If so I agree.

Except Ronaldo is the reason they got out the group Won the Semi had an influence on the game inning goal vs Croatia and SCORED in his penalty shootout vs Poland.

Yes, I think Ronaldo's done more for his country because for all of his career he's performed better. Not because he's won more.

Can we congratulate Ronaldo for his ridiculous third CL in a row? Or too soon?

he SCORED vs Poland? Thanks for that.

Did he have a Maradona 1986 tournament?

Love that - having an influence vs Croatia part.

No but to say he did nothing in the euros is idiotic to say the least he literally played a part all the way into the finals.

And yes he scored his penalty. Something Messi couldn't do in his final. You should leave the thread for the day cause this is getting sad now.

I just meant the way Portugal has won the EC or Argentina will win the WC supposedly. That was the question. Will the Ronaldo fans aknowledge the fact Messi has won it or will they find a new reason to put him down? Like he scored only in group stages, or he was injured or wasn't influental in semis or in a final.

What they’re saying is

Barca has such an “awful” side if Ronaldo was on the team they still would have bottled the 3 goal aggregate lead

Easily. #1 ranked international side vs Chile? Idk how he wouldn’t get the job done there.

Maradona’s fault Messi missed the penalty as well though.
There have been 3 Copa America championships in the space of 5 years (2011, 2015 and 2016). One of them was on Argentinian soil. Messi failed to win any of those.

Besides, Argentina with Messi barely made it to the 2010 and 2018 WCs even though 5 teams could qualify. Yes, he was phenomenal in the last game of the most recent qualifiers, but Argentina should’ve never been in that position to begin with.

Ronaldo went to Italy and the whole stadium gave him a standing ovation... Messi went to Italy and watched a quarter final game from the pitch :wenger:

Madrid are just as dependant on Ronaldo as Barca are of Messi. The 1st half of the season is enough evidence of this. Without Ronaldo they're fecked. When he was doing sh*t in the beginning they stumbled so far behind in the league. Benzema can't score to his godamn life and Bale is always injured or trying to get in-form after recovering from an injury. There's only so much you can do with a good midfield (modric & kroos) if there's no one to score. I think Ronaldo and Madrid this season's have further reinforced the fact that scoring is the single hardest and most important thing in the game.

I dare even say Madrid are more reliant on Ronaldo as with Barca, Messi has Suarez at least who is on 20+ league goals alone for the season. After Ronaldo, who's the next topscorer? I think what influences people's thinking is the fact that Messi does this so-called dropping deep to create play for his teammates etc.

Also swap teams for Messi and CR and I doubt Madrid would improve much.

He's not as versatile as Ronaldo in terms of goalscoring. Neither is his movement off the ball as intelligent.

Also, his dribbling becomes negligible as there other great dribblers on the Madrid team like Modric, Isco, Marcelo and even Vasquez.

Before the pass comes the move, as Xavi once said. If Messi played for Madrid instead of Ronaldo they'd lose and people would blame rubbish Benzema scoring 5 goals all year and turtle Kroos making only sideway passes. If you actually watch Madrid they create "easy" chances through spamming crosses. Ronaldo lives off aerial balls, being at the right place at the right time for second balls and being quick on counter attacks. Messi doesn't have that scoring versatility meaning that creating chances for him is a lot harder.

And i doubt they'd need him to be "controlling games"

I suppose we were warned that this thread is the worst thread ever. That post must be a WUM. Surely.
You're all so funny reading what you want to understand about what I said, not what I actually said.

In no way I'm implying Ronaldo hasn't earned the right to be compared with Messi, he already had that (and had bigger claims than Messi to be considered better) at United, and if you read more than one of my posts, like I'm sure you've done, you already know that. I'm just saying that a team like Real Madrid would fabricate an anti Messi either way if they didn't have Ronaldo.

It could even reach a point of stupidity, that they could be claiming Higuain at Real, Ronaldo at United and Messi at Barcelona were on equal level.

Higuain has scored like 10 CL goals to date though and almost never performs on the biggest stage. He has also never broken any records or played consistently well over numerous seasons or looked like a world beater. I doubt anyone would have been comparing him to Messi.

That roma loss has probably made you go berserk.
