So is Ronnie closing the gap to Messi or increasing the gap from him?
The latter.

One’s getting the label as the best big game performer out there. The other, a choker who doesn’t show up in the biggest moments.

But he's played with and single handedly carried not one but three different Barcelona teams... Pretty sure if he signed for Chelsea this summer, they'd be huge faves and probably win the league comfortably next season, same as if Chelsea signed Ronaldo. I just think its pretty dumb wording by Sir Alex.
"single handedly carried Barca " oh god please.

"It's not just goals that matter. It's not just trophies that matter" so a player who is good at achieving the objectives of the game is "limited"

No it doesn't. It's just funny. They were annoying so now you're giving it back being annoying yourself.
Difference being they were genuinely annoying. I’m doing it so they get a taste of their own medicine. Must say, find it funny they can’t accept it hahah

The mod who is controlling the poll options is putting biased options up so that redcafe becomes the second forum in the world after Madrid's to consider Ronaldo the GOAT.

No there's not. This thread is about who the superior player is. If you want a thread on who the more successful player is then make it. Messi's best performances beat Ronaldo's one. Again before I'm attacked I'm not shitting on Ronaldo, he's amazing. As a United fan I want him to be the one who kicks Liverpool out of the CL because of his connections to this club. If Roma can't win the whole thing I want him to win it.

This thread is about who the superior footballer is full stop. It's Messi.
No its not its about Messi vs Ronaldo overall career, ability, trophies etc.

Goals conceded by Barca (ucl +la liga):
7 + 16 = 23

Goals conceded by Real (ucl +la liga):
9 + 31 = 40

...Messi is being carried by his team.

...Ronaldo carries Real Madrid.
Ronaldo
150 games, game winning goals: 36

Messi
125 games, game winning goals: 33

Do you even know what the stat you linked is about?

But Cristiano single handedly carried Real and Portugal right? Bottom line on this debate is outside of Portugal and United fans very few will plump for Ronaldo over Messi.

Very interesting how most votes will actually look like these 9...
http://messivsronaldo.net/what-do-the-professionals-think-messi-ronaldo/ the 3 votes for CR7, 3 ex-United players of which 1 is also ex-Real. Also using the opinion of Sir Alex to back Ronaldo is like using Pep's to back Messi, as if either would ever pick the opposite.

Even Jose says Messi is better for what its worth.

If you’re doing it on purpose. Don’t. Ffs.
Back in 09/12 even suggesting that Ronaldo was close to Messi was often laughed at. I even maintained that Messi was better than Ronaldo from 2009 to 2012 but even mentioning them as competitors was laughed at as Ronaldo had nothing on Messi so maybe that's why some on here are being a little annoying. Like he mentioned he isn't really meaning it (unlike back then and even now tbh when Ronaldo is considered top 10 at best)

The truth is many don't like Ronaldo because he is cocky and arrogant. Truth of the matter is that means feck all. True fans will know who the best is an was.

The thread is literally about who the better overall player is. Was Rio Ferdinand worse than Heskey then in your mind? Messi's best performances on a football field outdo Ronaldo's best performances win or lose for either in individual games. George Best shits all over any England 66 player but played for Northern Ireland. It's the same bloody thing. For God's sake it doesn't matter who ends up with more trophies, Messi is a better player than Ronaldo. This thread is about comparing them as footballers not as trophy winners. Start another thread for the latter and in all honesty Ronaldo will win.

Answer my question so, was Rooney better than Gazza? By the way I have Rooney well over Shearer, Cole, Kane etc because he was a better 'footballer' than any of them. If scoring goals is all that matters is Rooney the best United player of all time (he has to be in your opinion going off your post).

Again I'll say it, Ronaldo is top 4 of all time but Messi is the best I've ever seen.
Bringing Best to compare Messi vs Ronaldo? He plays in a better team and plays for Argentina, the other plays for a “Galatico” team with a terrible defense and I’m amused they still in competition, then you try to say Messi plays for a national team thats compared with northern Ireland? Can you just say Messi is more entertaining to watch and when is on his day is a really a joy to watch, but at the end the game is the goals that’s important and not how many dribbles a player did.
I’m a Maradona big fan and all this goat is bull shit because I believe Best was better or at least the same level of Messi and CR, different times I know.

Eh... so the BDO judges whose the better player throughout their careers? I'm pretty sure its whose had a better season... I'm also pretty sure its full of political voting and both Messi and Ronaldo have one each they shouldn't have, they should belong to Sneijder and Ribery.

Michael Owen has more BDO's than Luis Suarez and Raul... he was obviously a better player... oh wait.
Kevin Keegan has more than George Best... Nedved has more than Xavi...

Even that is misconceived. His cocky/arrogance is due to him pushing himself and making himself accountable more so than any other player in the world. He’s confident and believes in his abilities enough to be able to do and behave the way he does. That’s the difference. It rubs people the wrong way because he’s great enough to be able to back it up.

But then again, Messi supposedly has amazing attitude but quit on his country...imagine if that were Ronaldo...

I love Ronaldo btw, I have him and Messi as the top 2 of all times and both them carried their respective teams to so many trophies imho.
True fans will and most who are neutral will say Messi.

Just because most say something don't mean its always true. Dont follow but lead It takes real football eye and knowledge to see whose better. Besides that I agree when they both hand it up I would have them dead even with Pele and Maradona.

You think the captains of Tuvalu, Bermuda or Chad are experts in international football?.

Anyway, that's beyond the point, someone told you that this debate, at general level, has a lot of people pushing for Ronaldo because they're Real Madrid and United fans, 2 of the 3 most followed teams in the world, it wasn't only about votes in any gala, just how certain people were predisposed to root for one or the other due to their club allegiances.

The main reason I judge them above Pele and Maradona is simple, I've seen a shitload more and they play in a time when I believe standards are much higher and players much more professional. My eyes tend to tell me Messi too but tbh its almost a coin flip. Ronaldo can do things Messi can only dream of and vice versa.

There’s a difference between the 2.

I agree Messi is the most talented player ever. That doesn’t meant he’s the BEST player as Ronaldo is that imo with him coming through when it matters most.

Some would prefer the most talented player which is perfectly fine. I prefer the one you know you can rely on, the best big game player ever.

As I said a while ago if in a rating of1-10 10 being the highest score. For me Ronaldo would be a 10 BUT Messi would be a 9.9 it is that close in my eyes but its intangibles and X factors that push Ronaldo ahead for me.

Old Testament thinking is never good.

Mocking and arrogant behaviour regarding a completely specious debate (do these kind of posters take as much effort discussing socio/economic issues and real injustices?) seems to be the sport du jour for many on the internet; psychiatrists would tell you it’s the product of a classic insecure/overblown ego complex. I’ve found this to be very close to the truth in many, many cases I’ve encountered where people’s own self-esteem is far too closely tied to how a complete stranger performs in sport. A very strange psychosis, indeed.

The lack of respect, understanding and reading things in context with those that may disagree with your assertions is, sadly, something which I’ve seen increase substantially in society over the last 30 years. Human beings aren’t genetically becoming dimmer (as tempting as it can be to think this); we are organising ourselves in a manner that is causing it to happen. It’s interesting to view but bloody frightening.

I blame Ayn Rand and then Alan **** Greenspan, but that’s another story...

I’m sure I’m boring you all now, so I’ll flee this insanity. I’ve tried to derail the nonsense here before but know I’m fighting a much higher power (the only known cure for some of the immense ego on these boards is a 100 mic. dose of the dreaded Lysergic, but that’s a little harsh!).

Enjoy football for the meaningless pursuit it is and please play nice, kids!

I agree Messi is the most talented player ever. That doesn’t meant he’s the BEST player as Ronaldo is that imo with him coming through when it matters most.
But does he, did taking the first half of the season off allow him to come through now and win the CL for example, or did it completely feck up Madrid's season? Is Madrid currently being in 4th because of Ronaldo taking the part of the season where no awards are voted on off to pace himself. Has he cost Madrid La Liga so he can be prime for the later stages of the CL, hell knowing Ronaldo and I love him for it, did he take it easy September to January because he knew the BDO was sewn up and he could keep himself for the business end and another run at it this season. I guess what I'm trying to say here, is in La Liga when it mattered most this season Ronaldo's form allowed Messi to pretty much win it by christmas. So does Ronnies good form now matter when the teams bread and butter is done?

If Madrid win the CL you'd say advantage Ronaldo, but it they don't Messi's early season form where he's practically dragged Barca to the title makes it his season as he's won the league before Ronnies got started.

As I said for me its almost a coin flip that I narrowly favor Messi over him in. I mean would Barca have won what they won without Messi? Not in a million years, Luis Enrique practically owes him a treble. Would Madrid have bounced back if they hadn't taken Ronaldo from United? Not in a million years either. Its what so great about them both... they are almost inseperable.

I'm not entirely sure what you are arguing here. Messi and Ronaldo have practically identical winning records. With both players being as key in all of those 8 CL runs, though the CL leans Ronaldos way.....Messi is always key in the league as is Ronaldo and Messi clearly has the edge there and in the Domestic Cup finals but well you can give Ronaldo the edge internationally I guess even if he didn't do anything in the final.

They've both come through "when it matters"....and both haven't at times.

At this point, who you see as the better is down to probably what you prefer - Ronaldo's relentlessness or Messi's beauty I guess. I don't know. This thread is fun because it's actually insane.
