First ones cynical, but maybe a touch harsh to get booked for that.

Second ones a blatant card, stupid challenge to make having been booked already.

How does this shit still get spouted?

Were they both yellows? By your own admission yes, end of story. Nothing else is relevant.
Right. A ref never takes any other factors into his decision. I can't count how many second yellows or reds I've seen given in the first 9 minutes of an important cup game. Oh wait, I can. Practically none. It's always that cut and dried. By the way. I'm not sure the first one was even a foul let alone a yellow. The side angle looks like he didn't even touch him.

Refs can't make up their own rules. It's either a foul or it isn't, a card or it isn't. There's no mitigating circumstances, no discretion based on context.

Refs taking those things into account are the ones getting it wrong. That's the whole point.

There is no rule but it is how refs referee games
Then they're doing it wrong. This guy has done it right.

I was a fan of Godin until I saw he wears a gumshield.

Like that one kid at school, terrible at sport, mum gives him a gumshield for all PE.

Wrong sport mate.

This is the problem, it's consistency.

The referees rarely will give a yellow card early on to give the players a chance (for some reason)

Tackles early in the game compared to later are usually punished differently.

This time the referee does it by the letter of the law and it's a shock, but it shouldn't be.

Then every ref bar this one is doing a terrible job because refs do take the time of the clock into consideration for example. As a general rule a foul in the 1st minute is a lot less likely to be punished with a yellow card than the same foul in the 60th minute.

Ref become extremely card shy now...almost as if he decided before the game what he wanted to do in the first part of the game

Yes, they are doing it wrong and it needs to be addressed.

Why is it? Explain why it should carry less weight.

the first yellow card is very harsh - I'd be letting that go, tbh

guy doesn't really look like a footballer though, so always gonna be in trouble, innit?

Probably been said but is there a reason Costa is on the bench? Could do with him winding people up.

Simeone's number two somehow looks even more scarier than he does.

Pretty sure he lost a bunch of teeth during a game a while back.
If you've ever had that happen you wouldn't want it to happen again either...

Arsenal really need at least a 2 goal lead here given the man advantage, it'll be a completely different game for them in Spain.

It shouldn't, but it does.

I think it's due to the frequency of the fouls, it being a team's 1st foul or a team's 6th or 7th is a bit different.

Alexis Lalas may just be the worst American to open their mouth this year. Yes I'm aware of the competition.

But there will be for the next 85mins or the game will be chaos & that's the problem of having no lenient attitude early doors.

Refs generally let yellow card offences, unless extremely obvious, in the first ten mins go, it's a rule of thumb that's adhered to by most refs.
Reason being no one wants to see red cards and a ruined game after 15 minutes, like tonight.
In addition, the ref will then have to be consistent, through out the gamr, unlike tonight!

Can still see Atletico nicking one here, Pratey was good on the counter attack there.

That would be a disaster for Arsenal, they simply can't concede an away goal playing 10 men now.
