There must be some direction from the Board and presumably he’d have to run it past Ed who he intends to appoint and / or what the structure looks like.

If the McKenna rumours are true, there must be pressure from the Board to improve the attacking play.

Obviously guessing but it’s a key appointment and there must be a proper search/selection process.

Ed has no influence on the structure of Mourinho's staff.
There's not a chance Ed would even try to push MckeMcK on Mourinho .

Why wouldn’t he? Genuine question as I would have thought he would, I mean he appoints the manager so presumably he (or wider board) can influence/approve who he brings in?

Probably a good move in the sense that Mourinho might think he needs a new head on his management team to spice up the boring shite we play. I absolutely rate Mourinho but we need to improve.

From the Jose quotes Castles posted on twitter it seems kind of obvious that Carrick is going to step into that role and Jose is going to hire more technical assistants and fitness coaches to fill the gaps.

No. Ed would aid in giving the manager the best environment to work in. This would include allowing his preferred support staff and buying the required targets amongst other things.

It's our policy that the manager is king in all matters to do with football.

It is a bit weird. Wasn't this the first time since forever that Mourinho didn't win the league in his second season? Then his longtime assistant and best friend leaves at the end of the season. Not saying he got fired, he could have left for a number of reasons, but all things have an end and I guess something had to change this time around. It's not a bad move either because most of the disappointed fans will be more forgivable now. We are out for blood sometimes and this is a relief in a weird way. I don't know if Rui Faria leaving will be a good or a bad thing really, but it is kinda cool i guess because i don't want to lose Mourinho while i want us to do some major changes. Hopefully this means something

Because I wouldn't expect Ed to have the foggiest idea who the best assistant manager to bring in would be. That's not a slight on Ed, that's just neither his role nor anything approaching his area of expertise.

Jose said nobody in world football is ready to be his assistant manager. Really? I'm a fan Jose but let your ego have a day off.
Try to read between the line...

Run Farias is more than a coworker. He is like a broker to Mourinho. Mourinho clearly expanded on this point talking about all his time as head coach and Rui Faria had been there with him during good days and crisis. Can you trust another person on the first sight as much as your brother?

Does your man Howson make people pay to listen to his podcasts? If so what a knobber!

Yeah, I completely agree with you on the last part. Hopefully we will see some expansive football next season, if McKenna is indeed taking over. And if we do play good football next season, it'll be clear who that's down to. When the time comes, I wouldn't be against him becoming manager. All day dreaming at the minute, obviously. Nothing is even confirmed yet haha but you can't help but be excited if he can bring some of football that the under 18's played last season!
It'll be on his Patreon I think. That's fairly common on it. People will have a YouTube channel or similar that everyone sees then they'll have monthly subscribers who they give special content to. Nothing wrong with that.

Not sure there is a reason to be disappointed - it's a re-structure and he said that he will, indeed, bring in someone new. There just won't be an OFFICIAL ass man.
Funny how the pessimists seem to have missed the subsequent comments.

Its probably a good thing, Fergie's tactics evolved a lot because his Assistants brought new ideas to the table. Maybe this can help Mourinho's style evolve too.

So Jose is bringing new staff and instead of having assistant manager, he will have bunch of coaches with designated tasks. He also said he will improve performance level of his staff on fitness and tactical level (assuming by bringing in new staff). Looks very interesting and big changes ahead in backroom staff.

Jose and change, maybe there's hope after all. Something to look forward to.

Weird we've both seemingly lost our assistants this season.
Stranger things have happened.

Liverpool become rock-solid defensively, we start pressing teams off the park in midfield, both sides improve massively, City are overthrown, and the United-Liverpool rivalry is properly reborn as the two sides clean up domestically and in Europe...

Or one of us will give it to Giggsy.

Seriously, if anyone thinks Jose is going to take instructions on hw to attack from a rookie manager like Kieran, you're having a laugh.

Managers stick to what they know. Kieran, or Carrick, or whoever, is going to be there for support. Not to reinvent Jose's wheel.

Coaching staff does lot more than just tell Jose how to attack.

I'd disagree with that. A managers main job is motivational. Tactics are a team effort alongside the coaches.

Especially since Jose is the Stubborn One.
SAF said, he felt like a tactical dinosaur and that Queiroz was a genius. Evolvement and progress among the staff was part of SAFs success. He was never afraid of the new things.

Did Ed try and push Giggs onto Jose? I don't think so.
The way that Ed runs things is that footballing matters are dealt with by Jose.
When it comes to wages and purchases, he handles that, though he will get advice from Jose.
By all means, he may ask Jose if McKenna would be good for the assistant position, but he won't force it on him, like perhaps Abramovic, would've.

So, if this is true, he is going to modernise the backroom staffing structure.
And if this is true, it looks like he is preparing for a long stay....not just a 3rd and final season hurrah, which is what many believe.

Can't say I am in the pro Mourinho camp, but this all sounds positive to me.

I think Jose has just confirmed that he was planning the long term future with us by giving Carrick that promise

Nows the time for him to self assess and bring in one or two coaches to fill the clear holes in his style. I'd have a hell of a lot more faith in him if he brings in a modern style attacking coach. Jose is very good for defenders and stability and if he can find the right person to add in some fluidity and flair to supplement that then we should be in good stead. If the plan is to do that then I'd hope we could convince someone like Martial to stay for another year. As much as certain attacking players need to toughen up they also need good direction and a clear style to implement in attack. I'd go as far to say it's easier to track back as a forward when you are enjoying the attacking play offered up too.

Edit: meant to add that Jose having more time to focus on the facets he is truly brilliant at can only be good for us too.

So did he leave for the Benfica job? I guess Jose would never push him out and they also didnt have a bust up? I assume he wants to try the managers job and not be an assistant all the time

Biggest job in Portugal, he'd be mad not to take it if he was offered.

Seems to me that Carrick is an absolute shoe in.
