What a result for Russia. Shame Saudi were all over the place but an excellent start to the WC.

Not that impressed by ITV's commentary. Didn't feel like they were that bothered or is it just me?

Form is temporary, bans are permanent.
Good opener for the tourney. Five goals is great. Russia were so much better than Saudi. The fourth goal was lovely. So were the second and third. Uruguay are going to batter Saudi, aren't they? I'm buzzing for the World Cup.

Russia barely had to harry or press at all, just sit and wait for the Saudis to give it away

Thanks to KSA, Egypt are under massive pressure. Still betting on Russia to finish second. Egypt have placed too much trust on one star man and often that turns out to be a damp squib on the international stage.

In any case, I am really curious to see how Salah will perform in the Egyptian team set-up in the world cup when the pressure's on him. Game against Uruguay is a hell of a first one though.

no need to use reverse jinx mate, Germany are already in the semi-finals, will probably beat England 7-1 along the way

The Saudi fans were celebrating the fifth goal they conceded. Absolutely hilarious.:lol::lol:

Saudi seemed technically decent on an individual level but in every other facet of the game they were awful.

Not the most riveting match to open with, but what are ya gonna do. The Saudi players seemed too small and light to stand up to the tall Russians.

So much for Russia being poor. I actually had a sweepstake with my colleagues that Russia would win the group with Uruguay in second and everyone thought I was nuts. If Uruguay beat Egypt tomorrow, and Russia can beat or draw with Egypt, they are almost deadcert to make it to the last 16.

Russia decent with players of quality not filling the pitch, but sprinkling the pitch, if you could put it that way. Saudi just awful and probably put out the worst performance I have ever seen at a World Cup from keeper to their supposed talismanic striker al sahlawi, and i saw north korea games in 2010, including the 7-0 to portugal.

Crowd got behind Russia very well and spurred them on in the early stages and was worth at least two goals. One person who was just straight up brilliant in the match though was Golovin, absolutely outstanding and showed his undoubted quality along with work rate and fighting spirit.

Jose, snap him up. I think he’s still about 21 as well. Still so much potential to realise for Golovin.
I guess you missed the massacre at the Maracana 2014

Bloody hell, the Saudis were filth. Russia were better than expected and I'm glad they got the tournament off to a blinding start! I was expecting a grim 1-0. Some very nice goals, too. I'm interested to see Russia against the other two now, especially Egypt. Uruguay's fire-power alone should see them comfortably win the group though.

Maybe they all bet on a 5-0. Would be absolutely shocked to find Saudi Arabia and Russia involved in match fixing of course...

Won't be a surprise if they hate their team as much as everyone else do. Actually it looks this way.

Legitimately laughed out loud at this. For anyone wondering, he keeps shouting 'Five five five' throughout the video

What is he doing there? He should work on transfer and talk to Martial, not this. He'll be sacked by December by the looks of it.
He manages the football team. It's the job of Ed Woodward to deal with contracts and transfers. Martial is probably on holiday anyway.

Other managers are at home thinking about the next season and who they'll buy and he's there taking a rest and enjoying himself.

We've already signed two players. He will have already given Woodward a bunch of names he wants.

Some lovely goals Russia scored. Golovin looks quite handy.

Rubbish performance and result for Saudi Arabia.

How did they qualify? I mean, Asia's not the toughest region but still.
These are mostly not the players who who qualified for the tournament. As soon as the country qualify for a tournament like this (Alhilal Saudi Club get the lions share of starters unlike the qualifiers. They are basically the capital team and the team of the so called elite) in 1994 there we no players from that club as first teamers and we went on to have the best WC tournament we were ever in. Most fans of other clubs were joyful today because this team does not represent the best in the country just the team of the elite whom they despise.
