Fellaini (on his way) out? | Duncan Castles: Fellaini agrees new two year deal

If it really is to put 30-40m towards someone this window, then fine. The two years is still weird, though.
Nothing weird about it we were vocal about not handing out more than 1 year contracts for players already in their 30s but due to Jose's demands club decided to cave in and be held to ransom by Fellaini.

Happy for him to stay as long as his contract doesn’t include a set amount of play time. Would be devastated if that’s the case.

I really don’t think it matters he is staying, he has proven over 5 years he isn’t good enough but we have plenty of players like that.

Fellaini won’t make much of a difference in positive or negative manner next season. The only way club will improve is by signing and getting more out of much more talented players.

Mourinho is third successive manager who doesn’t have a coherent and consistent attacking plan, a player like Fellaini appeals to managers like that because it’s easy and very occasionally it works.

The funny thing is that someone like Luke Shaw has genuinely not done anything in 4 years. But nobody complains about him being in our squad.
Yet, we have Fellaini haters, re-writing history, just to call him names.
Nowhere to hide now for us blind followers.

I totally disagree with you about Fellaini but we agree there.

Nobody can lament Fellaini staying and at the same time still want to give Luke Shaw another chance. He's totally ran out of excuses in my opinon.

You can also don't mind Fellaini and Shaw staying while not acting as if either of them had been anything but average or below that. I still have hope for Shaw mainly because he isn't worse than Young but if we can upgrade him, we shouldn't hesitate.

Sanchez is not for enough at RW, let's play the best players where in their best positions. And lingard won't be a starter at United he has way too many deficiencies in his game.
A new RW is not a toy but an absolute necessity as we have ZERO RWs.
Pogba needn't run games if he can get 15 assists and 10 goals. Fred can do the job of playmaker pretty well
Sanchez has played very dusccessfully as a RW for both Chile and Barca as well as spells at Udinese, in truth his best form in recent times has come as a striker but we wont be playing him there either, there is zero reason to spend millions on a RW when he can play there in a position he's done well in 100's of times. Fred is not a playmaker, so he can't do that role.

No we dont, but the fact of the matter is with this guy its beyond that. A few posts above this some classy wit has called him a lump of shit.

That was me and in 25 years of watching United he’s the only player I can’t stand the sight of.

He represents everything that’s been wrong with the club since SAF retired from being a Moyes signing to his clunky, dirty fecking awful style of play that should be representing a club run by big Sam.

Just because he plays for United doesn’t mean you cant have a negative opinion, the vast majority of fans would have liked him gone on a free transfer which says enough, he’s fecking wank let’s not pretend otherwise.

His whole trophy laden career was lost with one poor CL tie? Tough crowd you are. Just admit you fall for peer pressure and I will respect you for it.
It was all his talk before and after it. He didn't exactly say "we aren't good enough to win it anyway" but you can tell it was heavily implied. I don't believe he told the players "take a loss" but he definitely didn't have his heart in that tie. Then Liverpool get to the final. And if they had DDG instead of Karius, they probably would have taken it to extra time.

I don't like his attitude, his blaming the players for everything, his lack of drive to win. He always looks like he doesn't want to be here. Rarely celebrates goals any more. Fergie and Wenger were at their clubs for about 60 years each and I can't remember them not celebrating a goal (unless say, they were 3-0 down at the time)

The achievements mentioned are par like I said. A club spending 300m odd should be winning league cups at least.

Steady.

Awful news.
Cant believe the club and Mourinho here, disappointing stuff.
I thought we only gave 1 year extension to players over 30.
Bad start to the day.

Then you are the worst kind of supporter.

If Castles is correct ask yourself the question keep Fellaini or spend upwards of 30m on Arnautovic?
I'd much rather keep Fellaini, and I think there were talks that West Ham wanted upwards of £40m for Arnautovic which is ludicrous

Sevilla arent exactly push overs in cup competitions are they? Also was he on the field that day? We won two trophies last season but sure thats already been forgotten.

Sanchez : "I really like to play down the left, through the middle, but to tell you the truth, as long as I'm playing football, I'll fit in anywhere!"

It bothers me when its consistent. The thing that always bothered me with the Fellaini treatment is that it was based initially on how he joined the club, the late arrival and the fact we missed out on Thiago. Then it became about his physical appearance and his hairstyle.

Everyone is quite right to criticize him for his performance but to pretend that it only because of that, and even then he hasnt ever been our worst perfomer during his career here, then they are straight up lying.
In Fellaini's defence too he always seems to give 100% effort when he plays, he never comes and half asses it. Shame he receives the hatred that he does but I think a lot of it is to do with, like you said, how he joined/appearance/football he encourages.

He just never had the makings of a varsity athlete. That's his problem.

That's all fair, I'm in agreement yeah.

Totally agree.

Apparently scoring 3 or 4 important goals in 5 years negates all that though.
Funny how these people never bring up the goals he costs us through dreadful positioning, misplaced passes, terrible fouls and atrocious marking.

I didn't like the speculation on signing another midfielder this summer, considering we have a budget.
So for that reason I'm somewhat happy about this.

But I really don't like watching us play when he's in the team. He doesn't fit in as a replacement in any position, because José IMO makes him too much of a focal point.
Every goal kick from De Gea is kicked long to the sideline where he is supposed to chest it down, the hit and hope long balls from defence become even more frequent.

Fred, Matic and Pogba with Herrera, Pereira, McTominay and even Lingard in a midfield three should be enough.

The managers here seem to fall in love with this big bloated squad, with too many average mouths too feed.

I started writing this post to defend this contract extension, but now I've come to the conclusion that this is not a good move.

I'm not thrilled at all but also not sure the club could be so 'stupid'. (Doesn't mean they weren't!) Who knows what kind of talk went on behind closed doors...

Maybe to sell him in the next window ? He could always stay and finish those 2 years and then leave on a free, club taking a risk

Yes plus maybe the collective opinion sees him as a suitable 5th-6th choice for the mid-term.

Funny how these people never bring up the goals he costs us through dreadful positioning, misplaced passes, terrible fouls and atrocious marking.

Very good point.

I'm sure he's a nice guy but he is not good enough to be at United. I can understand him wanting to stay and be tough in negotiations, the problem is the management who are desperate for him to stay. It's a worrying sign for our play style next season and our ambition to win top competitions.

Come on guy, we finished 2nd in two competitions last year, what more do you want?!
