Is it strange that Matic’s injury was only detected after he returned from holiday? I mean, would he not have felt anything nagging at him during his 2/3 week holiday? Surely they are given a checkup before they depart from the national team.

By the sound of it, the injury was known. The involved people took chance in hoping it would naturally heal when Matic went on vacation. It didn't progress well so he had an emergency surgery to fix it when visiting a specialist. That's along the line what Mourinho said in one of the press conference.

I didn’t appreciate that nonsense of praising players in the media for returning early, as it felt like it was putting pressure on others. Maybe I am wrong, just a feeling, but it was all rather pointless anyway when Lukaku took 20 days holidays instead of 21.
