I still think we will sign someone but I fear we are gonna panic and splash £65 on Maguire. Would rather not sign anyone if that's the case...

This is the most simple trajectory of events as I see it now:

We are negotiating for Toby, we will keep going until the final few hours. However we have lined up Maguire as a "fellaini signing", because we know he is available until the last 5 mins of the window. We know it's absolutely possible for Levy to wreck the deal for Toby, so we need a 100% guaranteed buy. At 60+ million, LEI will rip our hands off to sell Maguire.

The absolute silence from Simon Stone or even Craig Norwood on our target or where we are with Toby speaks volumes. We know there are negotiations because of Kristof Terreur (Top Belgian Reporter). There can also be no doubt that Levy cannot be trusted.

So as of right now, we are likely to sign Toby. However don't be surprised if we announce in the last hour of the window that we've signed Maguire.

The idea that we won't signing ANYONE is, IMO, <10% right now.

I'd agree that you're probably along the right lines here.

I'd love us to go for both Toby + Maguire, but would be content with either at this stage.

That will mean we need to ship 2 centre backs before the deadline, but I believe we don't have to do this by Thursday.

Sorry, where did Chelsea come last season? :houllier:

If any team needs to strengthen, it's them, although it kind of depends whether Hazard could be arsed or not this year.
So they finished behind us last year big deal. Over the last 5 years how have we finished compared to them? Utd should be in with a shout of the league revery year, and its plain to see we are still way off that.

Spurs have 1, Toby. Who was frozen out a bit last season anyways. Rose and Dembele have been rumoured to go, but not heard anything to say they particularly want that to happen.

Chelsea have 1 to, Courtois. Willian wants to stay, and Hazard wants to stay (unless his dream club Madrid come in for him, which is applicable for most players in the world).

So I don't think it's bizzarre at all.
Nonsense, Willian and Rose had their agents pushing stories to the media for months they've only now been muted because they don't look like going.

We've hardly heard anything from Martial lately so if you're discounting them then obviously it follows Martial is hardly pushing away either.

You can also discount Pogba using your Hazard logic above as he's hardly pushing towards going to Wigan.

So it's going to be Deadline day muppetry. Any chances of a surprise deal just like Falcao deal back in 2014?

Never use last year’s league position as an argument against doom mongers. They are still convinced we’re the worst team ever beacause we play unattractively.

Im ok if we spend 65 quid on Maguire, id maybe push the boat out to £100 otherwise we should wait for Alderweireld.

You think that the board will spend big next Summer, just because they didn't spend much this Summer? It doesn't work like that.
The way it has worked in the last few years is that when we drop out of top 4, the club spend big money, to get back into the CL. Also, they replace the manager.
The owners want to make money - spend as little as possible, while maximising/maintaining revenue = the biggest profit possible.
I ask you this question: why would they spend £300M, say, to win the title, when the extra income gained from winning the title is next to nothing? Serious question.
Just because we didn't spend a lot this summer? No, that's not why we'll spend a lot next summer. We'll spend a lot next summer becuase we spend a lot nearly every summer and sometimes winters too. This is clearly an anomaly due a various factors all coming together. Weve been one of the biggest spenders in the game regardless of CL football next season or not.

A manager having players like Pogba, Lukaku, Sanchez, Matic, Rashford and Martial at his disposal isnt that bad now is it? The big BIG risk being taken however is the issue of a RW not being adressed and not having any natural fullbacks in the squad with the exception of Dialot. With just a day to go, adding a CB to the squad without selling one wouldnt be great.

Either the club has real difficulties to sell players or the club isnt ruthless enough in cutting players when they are just not good enough for a club who on paper has high ambitions.

The fans really need to unite against the board if we don't sign anybody. I really mean that. The future of the club is in jeopardy because they have shown ridiculous incompetency. If the only first team player we sign this summer is Fred then Woodward should be gone as the clock hits 5. I'm not overreacting, that is the reality of the situation. We're the biggest football club in the world and it's not just transfers that are a shambles.

Jesus. Shows the ambition of the hierarchy at the club. Settling for top 4.
I think it shows that we badly a DoF.

Hopefully Ed will still manage to at least get one deal over the line by tomorrow.

For me that's the most worrying thing. Not that we don't bring in a CB, But more the fact the owners won't invest in the team when it's clearly needed. The only difference from the team that was embarrassed in last years CL is Fred. Not good enough.

Chelsea always do this though. They win the league then shit the bed. They always come back stronger.

Adding Toby while having 4 defenders in the team doesnt make sense, no?
how many we have doesn't matter. He makes a difference on the park. Toby is light years ahead of the current crop. The 2 that simon stone mention (Bailly / Lindelof) are prospects. They need a mentor in the team and someone that can help them improve.

Lets face it, Till sponsorship's start drying up, and social media numbers dwindle then they don't really care. The prize money between 1st and 2nd is negligible and not worth £100 million a season in transfers every season to get there.

Even then the ever increasingly money brought in by TV deals, protects them even more.

How is that going to be managable tho? How many clubs in the Premier League have 5 defenders? (Genuine question).

Costs of Mina deal prohibitive just bugs me. The guy had a below average season for Barca, how has his value increased so much just because he had a half decent World Cup?

You are overreacting though. We only know tiny snippets of what’s going on. Aside from Liverpool, most big clubs have been quiet - should Chelsea, City and Spurs sack their CEO’s as well.

Just throwing money at players for the sake of it, just to sign players would be far worse. If we can’t get the players we want, for a price we think is fair - then we go with what we have. We can’t but 3-5 first team players every single summer, that’s not sustainable.

Toby isn't better than Jones/Rojo/Smalling..........I'm sorry. I refused to believe the club actually believe this.

I agree with you on this.

The only problem is that what we have (some of them) don't even want to be here vide Pogba, Martial.

It's not just transfers though is it?

The club is a mess. Look at the ground.

Woodward has to leave the club this Friday. Simply has to. The owners are the main cancer, more needs to be done from fans around the world. That hits them more than local fans. If fans want to put their head in the sand then that's up to them

Because there are a lot of desperate teams searching for top class central defenders. Very much a sellers market when the player had a good world cup. Shame it doesn't seem to work for Rojo...

This should have been the defining season for us and Mourinho - the third from his coming here.

By now we should have had a stable squad challenging for the league and also giving a good showing in the CL.

Unfortunately we are so far away.

Look at the state of our ground.

The club is going to the dogs. Transfers are a very small part, the managers selections is even less of a small part. Transfer incompetence resonates with fans, so is an opportunity to mobilise against them.

The club is going backwards fast. If you don't think that you are delued. The fans have to do something.
