This got me the thinking. Why do managers have blind spots? Do some managers value loyalty above performances?

Past loyalties, I suppose. Though he did sub him on and off once.

Also helps with petty dressing room battles (which, surprise surprise happen a lot under Mourinho). Matic has no choice but to back Mourinho when he gives him this much reign to play abysmal and still make the starting XI.

He loves his yes men. I think
Lukaku going through his worst goal drought of his career forced his hand but Jose will always choose his favorites. Lingard straight back in the line up now fit and Fellaini will be playing regular also now he’s fit.

The truth most likely lies somewhere in there.

To be fair, Fellaini and Lingard have rotated in and out of the squad. But his love for Matic is second to none. Guarenteed he starts our next game if he's healthy

The key thing to remember is that successful managers are successful because they’re stubborn gits who thinks they know best, and usually they’re right. So when they’re occasionally wrong, they simply dont listen.

I think it's more that managers like certain types of players (both in terms of football attributes and personality), which means that even in poor form they will favour that type of player over a different type in better form. All managers do this to a degree I think but at a certain point underperformers need to be dropped.

I remember when Matic signed for us Mourinho said that upon arriving at United he immediately thought our midfield was missing a Matic. That's just how he views the game and I doubt it has changed at all since. Even in bad form Mou probably fundamentally sees Matic as the type of player we need in midfield.

Because as much as some would like to believe, Mourinho isn't perfect.

When we haven't progressed, or reached top 4, have a team full of old/deadwood players and be in an even worse position compared to last year, then I'd love to see people come with the "Mourinho isn't perfect" excuse.

In fairness to Mourinho, who else in our squad is going to take 8 touches to get the ball in the exact right spot to then successfully blast a pass way off target?

Which player played instead of Matic? Pereira.
I am not accusing him of leaking stuff like this but it would be outrageous if a player which had achieved nothing has tried to apply pressure like this through the press. He has been out the team for a while which is the only reason I even mention him. Then again, could be one of the players he is close to.

I'm frustrated by some players' inability to keep things in-house and go cry to the media. It's unacceptable.

Imagine if some shite like this came out during the SAF era... they'd need to take out a life insurance.

I don't buy this story, but I personally am frustrated that Matic keeps getting played, so wouldn't blame them if this were true.

What about Fred and Herrera?

He had his select players at Chelsea yes. But at United no one is undroppable. Even Dave has had to sit out a lot of matches for a keeper of his standing.
Lingard was on form selected last season, Fellaini will be the plan B once Pogba is back. Not sure how you form your opinion, but seems to be just going off none factual stuff that's posted on here daily.

TBH, it's clearly a BS story based on journalist assumption. I doubt he went to the dressing room to ask the players about Matic. That doesn't change that I want Matic dropped ASAP, but English journalists publish such stories because they know it will appeal to certain group of readers, many of them are in this thread.

Herrera has played as much as possible almost since returning from injury. Fred is the only one left out really. Matic is the only midfielder that has stayed fit but his performance should bench him sooner rather than later.

Story is made up. At most a journalist heard a 2nd or 3rd hand about a player being unhappy on the bench when Matic is playing badly which is perfectly normal reaction for a player on the bench. I'd be worried if a player on the bench isn't unhappy about his situation.

The leak if there was one doesn't necessarily have come from the players.

Can someone in Manchester just break into his house and kick his knee a few times or something?

I don’t believe the story at all although I do believe that Pereira should be given a run as Matic seems to be either regressing rapidly or still hasn’t got over the World Cup in the summer so not having a proper rest. He’s massively out of form and at his age playing when bang out of form and maybe tired we won’t see him play himself into form.

I’d like to see a midfield of Fred, Pereira and Pogba which would be full of creativity and forward thinking although I do get that someone like Matic is needed for certain games too. I don’t think Matic and Fellaini should EVER be on the pitch at the same time and to me it looks like Matic needs Herrera or Fred alongside him when playing now as he needs their energy and legs to support him due to Pogba being further forward.

No, theyd need to take out travel insurance. Because they would be gone. All this silly crying makes them look pathetic, if true. Go to the manager, bring it up a team meeting, dont go crying to the press. All it does is feeds the click bait bullshit that puts pressure on the team.

I actually really like Matic but he's in shocking form and needs to be dropped. Imagine being Fred or Pereria and seeing that this guy is undroppable.

Couldn't agree more, it's a story taking a believable enough premise that resonates with what a frustrated section of the fan base wants to hear. It's pretty apparent that the media don't really care if what they print about United is true or not. Even if it is based on the truth they'll have dramatised it so much that the actual story has been lost, because they know a soap opera will generate more clicks than anything else.

My wit's end
If this is true (and I strongly doubt it, given the lack of attribution), my biggest issue is with the lack of squad unity.

What kind of dressing room turns on its own through the back channels of the press?

How is it "clearly a bs story"? Have you had a job before? If so you would know that if you work within a group of people and the boss favorized one above the rest, the rest WILL get pissed off. 100%. And what makes you think he went around the dressing room asking? A more likely scenario is that the player(s) in question came to him.

Players tend to have a much higher regard for their teammates than supporters or journalists do.

Seen it time and time again where a player is slaughtered and their teammates state they are important to the team, and totally defend them.

This is utter shite. No player at United is in any position to criticise another.

This is true, but there is a point where players see the obvious and realize they're being mistreated in comparison to others. If you're a player that wants to play and you're on a short leash while another is given chance after chance after chance, you're rightly going to be frustrated.

I think the article is bullshit. But if it's true, you can understand how some players feel when their peers are treated differently by the manager, while the likes of Pogba, Martial, Shaw had to warm the bench for long period and endure public shaming, the likes of Lukaku, Fellaini, Matic get off scot free and continue to start games without criticism from the manager.

If Mourinho has any indulgence for Matic, I would suspect its cos he does as Mourinho says. Mourinho seem to value that his players follow his instructions above all else.

Don't think there is anything in this story to be honest. Feels like somebody wrote an article based on the caf's moaning.

But the general point that there are no accountability structures in this club during a match on the field is completely correct.
