The mediocrity continues.

We should be shipping out the likes of him, Jones and Rojos and not pinning them to a 4 year contract.

The club is a joke now.

Think we are going to find it hard to ship out a lot of players due to how much we pay them. How many teams will pay as player like Rojo £80,000 a week who has has made 11 league starts in 2 years and only 70 in 5 years. He is going to need to take a massive wage cut.

As early as next season we'll be moaning about how we can't get rid of him. Probably got a pay bump too. Will probably spend the last 3 years of this contract on the bench

Good news. We need better CBs, but he's good enough to start against at least ~75% of other teams in the League.

It's a long season. It's important to have this kind of player in the squad if we are still aiming on winning the League.

In the situation the club is now I think it's good that he stays. Even though he has shortcomings, he has definitely good qualities as well.

Certainly there is a better player but at the moment he feels important for the team to have some stability in the defense and as a compliment to the younger players.

Before Lindelöf's injury, it felt that their interaction became better and better and I think they can develop it even more.

Good news. Still our best defender by a mile. Dumbasses here and on twitter aren't surprising though.

Makes total sense. If we keep him, we've got him for another 2 seasons, if we sell him on, we get a fee. If he's on 120K it is not down to individual stupidity as such, but the systemic stupidity of the club as a whole. Shaw went from 110K to 150K. Young got 115K years and years ago. Then of course we did two of the worst deals in the history of football with Rooney's 5 year contract and Sanchez' 4 year contract.

He's our most consistent defender and the board have shown there won't be any great overhaul. If we shift Jones and Rojo then we certainly do need Smalling. Bailly can improve greatly, but it's worrisome how injured he often feels.

Now sign Koulibaly.

Guess we’ve just got to accept the ambitions of the club are there for all to see. You don’t pay a player that much as backup as we’ve seen with the likes of Lingard.

Awful situation we have found ourselves in and my fear is we haven’t even seen the turning point yet.

Not as down on this as others, as I think he's an OK squad player. But if this is for him to continue as a starter, then that's not good enough. Very, very average player.

What's with all the negative comments isn't he your best defender? I thought you lot would be pleased

Thing is it may seem sensible now, but sign a top centre back in January (I'm taking it for granted that we will) then if we want to sign another in the summer (we should) Chris Smalling sitting on a 4 year contract with his big wages starts to look a problem.
What’s to say the defenders we sign work out? Imagine if we had sold Smalling when new CB’s like Lindelof,Rojo & Bailey struggled?

A great servant for the club and, not matter what it says about United, still our best centre back. A good lad with the right attitude. Well deserved.

120k is not big wages. He's on a contract that reflects his length of service, stature at the club that don't move into "leadership" levels of 200k+.

Unrelated to the reply, this thread is an absolute trainwreck. Some embarrassing posts here, one wonders why people even bother to support the club.

Name a club who could and would pay him £120k asides from us.

Well we had a one year option to extend Smalling's contract so we'd know by the time he left whether the new signing(s) had worked out. Hopefully our next centre back signing won't just be more cheapish prospect like Lindelof anyway.

Surely we should have waited for new gaffa or DOF to come in before we start agreeing all these new contracts?

£120k per week he doesn’t even get on the England bench !!! What are you on. The players that start for England won’t even be on that.

Absolutely and completely deserved. We'd have been mad not to do this one. Now onto Ander's contract...

Why not wait for new manager to have his say? If he doesn’t fancy Smalling we’re stuck paying his wages for another 4 years, truly baffling. Why the feckin urge, it’s not like there are a lot of potential takes lining up considering his wages.

Four years is it?, fecking hell. He should be kept for a couple of years maximum while we sell jones etc and get more quality in.
If this means we'll sell jones and ROjo. So be it. Happy to keep Smalling around. If Jones, Valencia and co all stay. We have serious issues.

Stones and Walker are on 100k. Next time their contracts are up for renewal they'll be well beyond 120k.

Other than those England defenders, who has won any meaningful trophy? Or anything at all?

reminds me of a recent home game, he was last man on the D receiving a back pass. Tried a Cruyff with nobody near him and fecked it up. True story
That's the thing with him. He'll have a good spell but then have an absolute brain fart by making a bad decision. I don't expect him to eradicate stupid tackles from his game anymore, he's too far gone. He won't improve or get better. My main issue with Smalling is his passing and lack of ability on the ball. He's awkward and cumbersome. He makes building out from the back and starting attacks difficult.

But he better than Jones and Rojo (not by much). Realistically we can't sell all of them. Keeping him is fine as long as the the other two are sold and a new CB is signed in summer.

Amazing to focus on the mistakes of our least error prone CB

Does Smalling get into the teams of any of the other top 6 sides bar maybe Arsenal? He may have been our most consistent defender since Fergie left but probably not good enough at the very top level. Good to have as a backup but probably shouldnt be starting for a team with title aspirations. think we're better off playing Bailly and Lindelof and seeing how good they can be since the board seems to be in no mood to spend any money on new CBs

No. Don't care, the wage reflects the level of service given to the club. Not the value on the open market.
So then they're too high unless you're absolutely 100% sure he's good enough to stay with us for the next 4 years no matter what happens.

Arsenal. A club 8 points ahead of us.
How did you make Arsenal?

Oh yes sorry I forgot a 22 year old signed for 40% of van Djik's fee is actually a ready made star.
