Kanté was having a mare in the final before the substitution. Not to say that he was or wasn't better than Pogba, but flawless isn't the word — great in all of the other games though.
He had sickness which was confirmed by everyone in the France camp. It was obvious something was wrong with him

He really was. Check every site you want or rewatch all the matches you want. Why are we rewriting history ?
You're stating this as if it's fact. It isn't. Both Pogba and Kante had great world cups. You can talk about checking other websites or that they're "rewriting history" all you want, but it doesn't make it factual.

No one said that Pogba didn't had a great world cup. Someone claimed that Pogba was the best french player which is a relatively rare claim.

How is this relevant though? He didn't have a flawless World Cup, which was the point I was making — he had a very bad 50 minutes in the final before the substitution, whatever the reasons. It's like saying that Luis Ronaldo had a Maradona-esque World Cup in 1998, because his subpar performance in the final shouldn't count — it was also caused by his health issues.

Someone claimed that Pogba was the best french player which is a relatively rare claim.
Yeah, that's over the top.

At least Pogba's better than Kante for me. I think France would do worse without Pogba than without Kante, as the Final showed.

Whoscored also has Pogba 7.49 and Kante @ 7.04 overall.

And yeh. I also think that Pogba was the best player in that WC.

Haven't heard anyone claiming that in France either.
I remember all the polls were giving the same results after the competition, Kanté Mbappé Varane and Griezmann top 4 french players of the world cup every time.

Kante was sick that day, that's why he went out so early in the game.

The final didn't show anything and France were largely dominated. And Kanté was the better player in pretty much every other games.

Semantics bro. Are you a lawyer or something ? He had a flawless WC except in the final in which he was sick.

I am not stating as a fact. It is widely accepted by all french media/pundits/ex players that Kanté had a better WC. I simply agree with that

Pogba had a bit of a mare in the first game against Australia. Maybe the worst player on the pitch alongside Umtiti.

Wasn't very good either in the game against Argentina.

Kante was pretty much the most consistent performer and overall best player for France in all games, bar the final.

And still France dominated Croatia, after he was subbed. So it just shows how "important" Kante is to France success.

Well, France didn't dominate Croatia. France won but Croatia dominated. And it also has nothing to do with Pogba being the best french player.

Pogba played the whole Euro 2016 final. Kanté didn't play. I guess that shows how important Pogba is to France failure. :o

Kanté was fine but I find claims of him being the best French player at the WC a bit surprising.

Kante did not have a sickness, the only source that reported this is an unreliable parisian newspaper.
No player or coach ever implied or confirmed that. Deschamps said he had an off game and that was it, he never brought up him being sick.

As for the final Croatia dominated the game, more shots on target, more shots overall, more possession and surprisingly better xG.

The 2 goals in the first half were the killers, Croatia had full control over it yet still conceided from an own goal and a PK.

It's hard to say that someone is the best player of the competition when he goes through the final like a ghost (sick or not). Varane was almost flawless during the entire competition, Pogba very good as well etc.

The problem is, Pogba has (had) the same problem in France that he has in england because of his attitude and hairstyle so media aren't very prone to praise his performances even if his WC was very good.

To me, Varane is the best player for France.

You're just wrong

If you can read french, it comes from Didier Deschamps (if you can't, he says "he was a bit sick") :

"Il était un peu malade. Il n'était pas bien footballistiquement les deux jours avant, ce qui était rare. C'est terrible pour lui… Je le sors parce que je le vois mal, ç'a aurait été la même chose pour un autre. "

Chasing the game may look like domination when you're behind. It was easiest world cup final for the winning team since 2002.

Heh. They scored two strange, flukey goals off set pieces and then killed the game with a great counter started and finished by pogba. And throughout all that, France were getting mauled

What happened after the 3-1 doesn't matter, game was effectively over

Mauled ? Did Croatia even create that many real chances ?

IIRC they had 3-4 great situations were they messed up either the final ball or the shot. And you crossed the halfway line like 3 times in total(and somehow got 3 goals)

My memory is known not be my best quality though

Good post but do you really think Dembele is that talented? I think there is no area in which he's better than Mbappe while his weaknesses are much more significant, especially first touch, close control, passing and decision making.

I think there are many players in this generation +/- 3 years who are more talented and better competition for Kylian in 3-5 years. Sane, Pulisic, Asensio, Dybala and Sterling are the first thoughts. Personally, I'd take many others over Dembele as long as we are only talking about talent, too, since I think they have greater potential: Sancho, Foden, Diaz, Havertz, Brandt, Martial, Rashford, Coman, Malcom, Bernardo Silva, Jesus, Vinicius Junior and Rodrygo all look much more comfortable on the ball if you ask me. The only thing they lack is Dembele's crazy speed (although being extremely quick in their own right) but when we look at the last generation, the fastest weren't the ones that came out on top.
Yes, for me Dembele is incredibly talented, far more than most of the names you've mentioned outside of Asensio and Sancho (Dybala is a bit beyond the talented youngster bracket by now). He's not just a speed merchant, he has incredible dribbling ability, crossing, is ambidextrous, his vision is much better than most people give him credit for, and his first touch can be sublime at times. He needs consistency and improve his intelligence on the field. If he manages to do that (big if, but very possible as well), then he has much more tools at his disposal than every single name you've mentioned on your list to become the best.

At least Pogba's better than Kante for me. I think France would do worse without Pogba than without Kante, as the Final showed.

Ah well, if the mighty Whoscored said it!

It's not really debatable that Kante was far more important than Pogba at the world cup, to use the final when he was sick instead of looking at every single other games of that world cup where he was far more important than Pogba. That's the problem when you cherry-pick one game and look at something like stats to try and quantify Kante's importance. You can ask anybody in France, Kante was far more important than Pogba. You don't need to diminish Kante's impact to improve Pogba's performances at the world cup. Pogba was nowhere close to the best player at the world cup, Varane and Kante were the two most important players, then you can go with Griezmann/Mbappe/Pogba/LLoris. He had a good world cup, and like most of the team started to come alive in the elimination games but Kante was great in every single game outside of the final where he clearly wasn't the same player and I don't fault him for that one bit because there was a legitimate reason for it.

Heh. They scored two strange, flukey goals off set pieces and then killed the game with a great counter started and finished by pogba. And throughout all that, France were getting mauled

Mauled? Croatia had the possession, they weren't a real threat for most of the game and France had double the amount of shots on goal. The only thing that made them threatening besides their goals were the corners which they had more of than France. I was watching the final and never felt like we weren't going to beat that team or even be in real danger.

He came on the pitch after 60 minutes because Tuchel punished him for being late at the team meeting.
Scored on his first opportunity in a closed game

Scoring every 55 minutes so far, incredible start after some feared he might burn out from last season + world cup, which could still happen later on.

Great goal, he didn't get much ball tonight but he is cold as always when the chance comes. Neymar gave him a great assist, and the connexion was nice on the second goal.
The great skill was against Marseille though, a wonderfull long external range pass to neymar ... incredible

Nevermind Pogba and Kante, I don't understand why Griezenann's WC is so highly rated. He's a terrific player but I found him to be sub par for most of the tournament.

I said this last year, I think Cavani is the fall man in PSG team. They look way sharper with Neymar and Mbappe as a front two, and Edinson is always overrated for me, he rarely does any combination plays and his defensive effort which was his stand out factor is not there anymore. If PSG close the lines and let Neymar and Kylian free to counter attack they are a scary prospect and my dark horse to win UCL. Also, the star teams that shit the bed and get huge criticism in the beggining of competition always seem like they win in the end to me.

Griezman benefits from a ridiculous hype machine driven by sponsors and media. He finished the season strongly with his club but wasn't great at the world cup. The good thing though, is that he knew it and played for the team without trying to overcomplicate things.

Plus he was directly involved in 6 of your 7 goals from the QF to the final. His set piece delivery was one of your best weapons

Btw: Mbappé is on 13 goals in 11 apps for the season now...

Turned 20 today. Some folks put his numbers together to date: https://www.reddit.com/r/soccer/comments/a7wnbl/mbappé_turns_20_today_here_are_his_stats_as_a/

Mbappé turns 20 today, here are his stats as a teenager : 150 games played (club and country), 73 Goals, 48 Assists. In less than 2 full seasons, he has won 1 World Cup, 2 Ligue 1 titles, 1 French Cup, and 1 French League Cup. Keep in mind he has, on average, played 67 minutes per game.

He'll win the Balon d'Or before Neymar does, he really needs to come here!

Looking forward to seeing him against us (and slightly scared).

Im seeing people comparing him to CR when he was at the same age. Were those people even watching CR back then? :houllier:
