This might prove unpopular, but what if we sold Young together with all the other deadwood in the club?

Talk of keeping Young because he's good for the dressing room is not reason enough, too much sentiment going around.

I'd say we buy a starting RB and Dalot deputises and a backup LB for Shaw.

I fear we could experience Valencia 2.0 with Young this coming season and i wouldn't want us hamstrung the way we have been when Valencia plays.

There’s no hate, only fear that we’ll be in the exact same situation next season as now. Young obviously isn’t a first choice Manchester United RB, he does a job. Expecting Dalot to step up when he’s not ready yet could be a horrible mistake.
There's plenty of hate. Just read this thread

There's no hate. Hate is an overused and misused word on this forum that morons have clung to to shoot down anyone who voices criticism. Criticism is not the same as hate. Casually accusing people of hating everything they criticise ruins discussion on here. Those who use the word "hater" have no idea how childish they sound and how cringe worthy it is.

That's it then. We're not getting a RB. We're going to spend the next season with Young as our main RB again. Anyone who think Dalot will go from barely 10 games a season to a starter or playing a lot is deluding himself.

Depressing.

Don't see what's funny about that. Everyone knows Young is one of the stronger personalities in the dressing room, he's been here since Fergie, always gives his all, even after being moved to fullback.

Think it's the right decision to keep Young. We don't have the squad depth to get rid of him this year. We are probably going to be 'losing' Fellaini, Valencia, Darmian and Rojo and possibly Jones, Mata, Sanchez and Lukaku. Potentially 8 players, which would be a massive turnover.

Good decision, despite the stick he has gotten over the seasons he has always been decent for us. I think this is good simply as he can back-up both full back positions. He's better at left back than right back IMO. The issue will be if we have to rely on him like we have done in previous seasons.

Ashley Young has been a good squad player for years and although not a ‘top’ player, he’s done a lot better than bigger names we’ve signed in recent years.

But it’s all about his role in the squad. As an experienced member that can play a few positions as back up, absolutely fine - as first choice full-back, absolutely not.

Buying two full-backs in one transfer window just isn't feasible though.

We have to be realistic.

I agree.

He is presently our first choice right back and second choice left back, so it makes perfect sense to give him a one year extension. He has also put in decent performances on a regular basis, which of course is why he's in the starting XI.

Given that he'll be almost 35 at the end of next season, I'm sure there are plans to put a replacement in place. I expect Diogo Dalot to improve as he gains experience, and I think it likely we'll get another full back on board in the summer transfer window. Next season should see Young gradually becoming a back up rather than first choice, but he will do a good job nevertheless.

But it is. Just that for whatever reason our club is poor in finding deals from around the globe. The likes of Liverpool have been able to get the likes of Shaqiri on a relative cheap. Or how Juve signs every quality player for peanuts.

The club shouldn't always be looking for £50m signing because then the turnover of deadwood becomes a laboured process

Why not? We need one good fullback out of two, other can be just decent back up. Just because many of us don't follow that much football it doesn't mean there aren't decent fullbacks around. Our right back options are really poor, average premierleague fullback would improve us, let alone some decent talent from Europe. Liverpool bought Robertson for silly money and he is better fullback than our all fullbacks combined.

Yeah not like City didn't buy a full complete set of fullbacks in one summer and went from Zabaleta, Kolarov and shite to what they're now.

He's anyway only got one year more. Not a bad squad player to have as a back-up LB and RB. I reckon he will decline like Valencia by next year but until then he can still be used for the domestic cups and some league games next season.

Do people actually think that this means he'll be a starter?
He seems perfectly happy with being backup, and always puts in a shift.
He is English, and important person in the group of players, can cover several positions, and there are probably not many teams who would pick him up either.
Let the guy finish his career here, he's been a loyal and nice bloke. I see no problems whatsoever.

The brutal reality is the Glazers are completely satisfied with top 4 and will do everything they possibly can to avoid investing in quality, Young is bang average and always has been, Jones will renew next and probably Mata, we are implicitly a business more than anything else, wake up and smell the coffee!

Not a fan of the Glazers but this is plain rubbish. We've spent a fortune on transfers since they've arrived and even after SAF.

Moaning is one thing but moaning about made up shit? Well, off you go.

I think if we know that Dalot is going to be first XI or if there's serious investment in an RB this window then everyone's cool with Young being a bit part player.

I think everyone who isn't cool with this is basically not cool with Young being our starting RB next season.

But every sane person on this planet knows that Young isn't going to be our starting RB, why do they even pretend to believe that?
He's a backup player, can play RB, LB, RW and LW, and if i remember correctly, he even played as #9 or #10 under LvG, for a match.

These people must be making up that Young is going to be a starter, just to have something to whine and complain about, now that our results are better, and they can't complaing at that or playstyle.

Make it stop.
:D This reflected my feelings better than most

He was ripped to shreds yesterday - he is clearly not a United level full back, and never was. He was a decent winger but that's about it. Same with Valencia, and no doubt he'll get some kind of extension too.

We are truly the club that rewards mediocrity. Anywhere else and we'd have upgraded a long time ago.
Unbelievable how our transfer/contract activity is akin to a drunkard wandering about the streets after a booze fest...perhaps still wobbling come 10am the next day. Utterly lacking in direction befitting of this club. Rewarding mediocrity and drafting in more of it at the going rate +100% extra. The buck stops with Ed, with the ramshackle decisions of those he has hired and his own hamstringing the club :houllier:

We have a lot of problems to solve. I'm not convinced right back is a priority with Dalot to come through.
After taking a step back though and thinking it through, this is what makes sense. As long as we are putting eggs in Dalot's basket, then no RB is not a priority. Ideally you want two natural players in every position, but with Dalot & Young and if we end up retaining Jones we have options at RB that mean we don't need to go out and buy. And boy are we going to have to spend for even 1 or 2 players considering the market. So wherever a position is deemed of secondary importance Ed will be saving money where possible.

Who knows, they might even slap Fred in at RB and convert him!

Everyone needs to look at the bigger picture.

He's going to be cover for Dalot and Shaw.

Valencia and Darmian will probably be shifted out in the summer.

We can do better, yes, but buying a backup right back for next season isn't really top priority.
And this sums it up nicely.

There are two other factors here as well. If we renew Young & Jones that is 2 towards the required 8 home grown players needed for squad registration. Yes they are now arguably average, mediocre, but the second factor is that of the fabric of the squad, the mentality, the experience. Both of those have been through the United mill these last few years, like the rest of us. Despite the benefits being arguably minimal, they are links to the Ferguson era, the mindset, the expectation. They form a core of that lifeblood along with the others still here, Carrick, Ole, etc. Whilst we don't keep that around just for the sake of it, I think in balance of all things considered keeping Young and Jones for a squad purposes is not a terrible decision. The only aspect of it I don't like is their wages, which as I mentioned above are probably 200% what they should be.

If one of Rojo, Darmian, Jones, Valencia and Young have to stay i don't mind it being Young as long as it's only as a backup.

Why do people keep saying this?
Look at how much we've spent the last few years!

Most likely it wasn't the Glazers stopping us spending huge (we did still cough £50m on Fred, which isn't exactly inconsequential) it was Woodward.

Just as well he did though, or we might have brought in Willian/Perisic/Aldy for huge money and be facing replacing them in a couple of years.
Maguire was horribly overpriced too.

Well, yeah he's definitely going to be our main RB next season if he extends. You have to be extremely deluded to not see that tbh!

Because players cost a lot more money nowadays (Dalot cost £20mil or something) and considering we need to buy a centre back, a midfielder and a winger our budget my not stretch that far?

To expect the club to spend £60-70 mil on just full backs when we have other positions to fill is a bit fanciful.

Also what's the point in buying an "average premier league fullback" as back up when we could get Young to do that?

Young is one of our most committed players and does a solid job.
He can definitely play on another year covering both full back positions.

We do need a long term option though, whether that's judged to be Dalot, or someone new has to come in.

He’s going to be first choice for another year, then. Not good news.

We have more pressing concerns, but RB is a problem also. He could fall off a cliff in the same way Valencia did at any second.
Don't think he will be first choice. 1 year extension means he's not a long or even medium term plan which means we will be looking to sign someone who is. We can't afford to let anyone capable of doing a job at fullback leave at the moment even if we do make a signing or two.We have Young and Shaw and that's basically it. With Dalot potentially being more useful over the next few years.

I also think he's done enough to earn it since Ole has taken over. He lacks any kind of composure when we're put under pressure but he's also the best of the current crop going forwards, works hard and doesn't stir up problems. Also he once let a bird crap in his mouth.

Feck knows what's happened with Valencia but him becoming unreliable just makes it more important we keep hold of the reliable fullbacks we do have

Meh, why not ? I have zero problems devoting a full summer to strengthen our fullbacks position. Actually this summer City revamped their fullback position was entirely devoted for it. most of their budget went into it + B.Silva.

We can definitely get 2 new fullbacks in one summer so your point is invalid. Also it's our most and biggest priority considering the zero output from these position. The midfield only needs some squad options and the right winger issue can be softened by having a proper RB.

Definitely aye? Do you have a direct dial into Woodward or something?
Yeah Dalot will go from 10 games a season to a main starter next season.

Don't enter such challenge because we all know what's going to happen next season.

Good move. He have some lacks, but never come down with such level of solid. We can't have only world class players. We need Young despite his age, perhaps to the bench in replacement role of both fullbacks.

In my opinion we should buy a new right back - such, wchich will play in good level during the some years, but not block seat to Dalot, when Portugalian get the his best age. Young should be a replacement for Shaw at left back. We shouldn't ignored one fact - Young are one of last members of Fergie's old school. He always struggling and worked hard, and have great character.

Our midfield needs more then squad options, and we are clearly going to go big on CB.

And you seriously think that the club will go into next season with just 3 full backs?

More likely we'll spend big on a first choice right back, and Dalot and Young can cover across both.

This is obviously because they believe Dalot is the future but not yet ready. To be honest Dalot looks like another poor signing, from the games he’s played and the very fact young is playing so badly and yet keeps him out if the team. So add to this young being the only other option at RB (assuming Darmian leaves) we really don’t have a bloody clue what we’re doing.

Actually think it's a decent move as the guy can play on both flanks and provides some decent cover. Our future regarding our first choice fullbacks is unclear though. Shaw has been very good at times this season but I'm hoping he can go up another gear or two (he's still young enough so there's no reason why not). Not really seen enough of Dalot, but again he's very young.

I like young, i do think he deserves another season.

I’m more worried about shaw on the other side. Now that’s a player that’s not doing anything worthwhile. He’s not very effective the definition of Mr Average.

Everyone thought Lindelof was a poor signing a season ago, now look at him. Don’t write off a 19 year old in his first season in a new league.

Not good to have in the squad? Although I can see his limitation (i.e. crossings), I think he has done well since OGS took over, maybe with the exception of the last match against Leicester where I thought he was poor. But still a great back-up for a better RB. Next season, maybe Dalot?

I have no problem with phasing out Young while we phase in Dalot.

Dalot shows incredible potential and it would be a waste to rush him in or shut him out.
