Stekelenburg just seemed the safest choice to replace VDS...

There were quite a few people who wanted us to signed Ron Vlaar after his good World Cup and Van Gaal coming in.

Surely Christensen already is the one?
He's not really cemented his place the first team but yeah, he's come closest for sure.

Its almost hard to see him as a youngster we gave a chance in the first team due to the loans. He played 2 seasons of top tier football before really getting a chance at Chelsea.

There was nothing delusional about expecting Schneiderlin to be at least decent for us given his level of performance at Southampton over several seasons.

Maybe some fans’ expectations were excessive, but nobody could have predicted that his form would nosedive and never recover even after he’d moved on to a lower pressure club.
I still maintain that LVG broke him mentally

I thought Darron Gibson would become our Frank Lampard scoring 10+ goals a season

Unfortunately alcohol and injuries don’t mix with being a top level footballer

Seen numerous on here over the years. No offence but United fans are up there with massively overrating players!

Fletcher world class
Remember comments about Anderson and Cleverley?
Welbeck

My two most wrong shouts were Zlatan and Van Dijk. To be fair I disliked Zlatan but now love him.

At Celtic in Europe I thought VVD looked lost, never seen him playing as well as he has!

I thought we were set to challenge for the CL/EL places for the next couple of years after that Martinez season. With Lukaku signing on a perm, Deulofeu/Stones/McCarthy as a nucleus of strong young talent and people like Coleman in top top form that team should've done a lot better.

Whoever I bet on
When United replaced Ronaldo with Owen Valencia and Obertan, I thought that the Glazers were even bigger leeches than they actually are and that United would have a Leeds-like fall from grace.

Basically, I was expecting United to be playing Championship football at this stage.

He has 4500 minutes over less than 2 seasons. He's clearly in the first team. He was the 9th most played player last season, and this year the 14th. He's not close, he's already there.

By that logic, Mason Mount doesn't count either as he has spent 2 years on loan.

I thought Januzaj was a generational sort of talent that would have some sort of Ozil-like influence at the club. Maybe under another manager it might have worked, but it looks ridiculous in hindsight.

We’re all guilty of talking shite. I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve been hopelessly wrong about a player.

Mount has played in Holland and in the Championship. Andreas was in the Bundesliga. If you don't see that as being different then we'll have to agree to disagree.

As for Andreas, he barely plays for us (sadly). In the squad sure but he's got 2 league appearances this year. That's not a first teamer.

Madnes Pogba couldn't get a game, when our midfield going crying out for a class cm, and we had the hottest prospect in the world itching to get some games and prove himself.

I also had a period I believed Clevery was the natural heir to Scholes.
It's easy to say it's madness now that we now how good he's turned out.

Januzaj would be our next big world class player (when he was 18)
Joe Cole would become the best playmaker in Europe (when he was 18)
I was telling everyone that Tom Cleverly was our new Paul Scholes.
Will Keane would be our next Ruud Van Nistelrooy (before that injury)
Danny Webber would become our answer to Michael Owen

My ones have mainly been getting the career trajectories of young players wrong. Nowadays, I'm more cynical and don't get too carried away. I've too many great youth players not make it.

The most deluded thing I heard was from a scouse mate. Who thinks they will be number uno in Europe once they win this season's title and get Fekir.

For a while I believed we would have won the UCL Final v Barcelona in Rome if we had Darren Fletcher available.

Fair to say, that delusion was shattered couple of seasons later

So because he was better and earned himself better loans he no longer counts as an academy player breaking through? If you don't see how stupid that is then we'll have to agree to disagree.

I literally just told you he is the 14th most played player for you this year. He's quite literally a first team player. And yes, the first team is indeed the whole squad, not 11 players. Your logic claims that Phil Jones, Eric Bailly, Sanchez and Juan Mata apparently aren't in United's first team.

Andreas was in your academy, he is now in your first team. He is the first to do it.

Not sure it's delusional. But found this post of mine back in 2007. This was about players you'd poach from relegated teams:

Honestly?

Ferdinand is a solid player who i would think would relish the opportunity to play for us. The rest of the West Ham lads are imo overrated, whoever put Tevez is a numpty, he hasn't scored yet!"£!

Ashley Young has impressed me. He's a solid enough option as a squad player, and could get alot better if given the opportunity.

Darren Bent would be welcome to join us. A young striker full of pace would compliment the rest of our strikers very well. He's also a bit more clinical than the strikers we have currently (ruling out Ole).
I seem to recall I rated Bent back in those days.

I thought Hargreaves was a much better footballer than Carrick
Hargreaves was a top player and he and Carrick should have been England’s long term central midfield after 2006 to be fair.

It might have been a bit excessive to think that Hargreaves was "much better', but he was certainly in the ballpark of being as good as Carrick, and arguably better, although they had differing assets. Carrick looks the better player now because he didn't get a really bad injury as Hargreaves did, and his career didn't fizzle out. Hargreaves got more England caps than Carrick, despite having a shorter career, because he probably was the better player.

Yep, you both raise good points which are hard to disagree with.

I think I tended to underrate Carrick a bit tbf. Always thought he “hid away” when things got tough. Anyway, pity about Hargreaves as well. Always liked him as a player. And his dead ball ability

They said he was better than Jones and Smalling. I had just joined the Cafe to get away from the United Facebook pages as I thought their admins and followers were delusional. Imagine my surprise when I found the Cafe to be the same just without the racism

We are probably all guilty of being a little bit delusional at times, overhyping players etc, none of us are experts. What is the most delusional thing you can recall saying or indeed heard another supporter saying? I'll give you mine.

I once said Darmien was the best right back in the world

I once said Januzaj would reach Ronaldo level (i think a few of us thought that)

I once said I wanted Mourinho to manage us for 15 years or more
I suggest you to stay away from the stock market.
That is shocking.

The only thing that comes to mind from recent times is the large portion of the caf that was convinced that all Sanchez needed to turn it around was a proper preseason.

Great thread. Very refreshing.

I don't know where to start though haha. I've made some awful shouts in the past but currently I'm still under the belief that alexis Sanchez will 'come good' for us eventually. I simply cannot get my head around the way a player can go from being so good to so shite within a matter of months (I know he wasn't exactly on fire when we signed him but still).

I reckon I'll still be thinking he'll come good in 50 years time.

The Doc when he was sacked,
"I have been punished for falling in love."

Willie Morgan put him right though,
"The thing that got him sacked wasn't falling in love - it was making the physio, reserve team manager, sending him out on scouting trips and giving his wife one whilst he was away."

He had a way with words did Willie !

Celtic had a season where their CB partnership was mainly van Dijk and Jason Denayer - on loan from City - and I often said I thought Denayer would go futher as he was a better defender and VVD would get found out a higher level as he was way too over-confident...oops.

I was convinced Kagawa and Depay would be great for us.

People that thought Rooney could play midfield or just needed to be played as a striker or needed to play as a 10 or needed pace around him for those last few years were the height of delusion.

Carrick is the type of player that isn't valued by English football traditionally. He isn't aggressive, he doesn't score goals, his work rate doesn't stand out, he's not an outstanding athlete. His qualities are more subtle. It's a cultural thing that we haven't appreciated players like Carrick, who was really a bit like Xavi, although obviously not as good. So I don't think you're the only one that had that blind spot.
