Nothing unexpected. 6th best team in PL v the best team in Spain. Outplayed over 180 minutes of football. And they didn’t even have to play well.

We can point to individual errors, but Barca could have turned it on, anytime.

We lack a leader and a game changer.

We’re miles behind domestically, no surprise we’re miles behind the best teams in Europe.

I'll get laughed at but if it were not for De Gea's mistake things might have been different

I really don't get the commentators fawning over Barcelona, they really weren't that good
Agreed!

We started strongly. The first was a typical Messi world class goal for fun, but all because of Young yet again being a joke.

De Gea lost concentration and the teams mental toughness was exposed once again.

Disgusting that this also means Liverpool will make the CL final again.

Mourinho built this team.
Yeah Jose deserves a huge portion of blame but we didn't replace enough of this team. He told us the team were shit, we should have sacked him in the summer or backed him. Get a DOF already

Rationally, I knew it was a step too far but I'm gutted. Even get a little lump in my throat when I think how far away we are from the top teams. Really depressed.

We need to invest heavily into the team. Seems like we have some good ideas of how to play but no resources to execute them.

4 of that back 5 started against Basel in 2011 when we were knocked out in the group stage. 8 seasons ago. Eight.
Is that true? My God, if so, that's a really, really depressing fact

Poor performance all round. The only small glimmer was Jones' handling of Suarez as I thought he had the better of him all game, he even looked the most composed on the ball bringing it out of defence. Ashley Young I don't know how many times Ive said it this season, shouldn't be anywhere near the team never mind the captaincy. Our French players went missing, as they tend to in big games. We missed Shaw who for me has been player of the season this year. Lingard has been shocking recently. Sanchez looked lively when he came on, hopefully he can have an impact between now and end of the season, however, after Arsenal's win last night, I cant see us getting into top 4, which makes the summer even harder without CL football next season.

Young - Just retire. One of the worst performances of a Captain for United I have ever seen. Every pass slow or misplaced. Every decision poor. Directly led to key goals.
Barcelona were not amazing; They just played the way they do.
We were just terrible after the mistakes.

Something that is really apparent is that Pogba doesn't have it in him in these big games. WC final or not, you need to perform at a decent level yourself and only then can you even think of grabbing a game and you have to make possession count.
Slow in thought; petulant and thoroughly poor.

I do want to commend Jones, Smalling, Lindelof, Fred and McTominay. Especially Fred. Poor lad.
Rashford wasvery bright but has alot of work to do.

Our touches and possession is off because we are a disjointed team. Every touch is slow in thought and hesitant.

I will say one final thing; this reminded me a little bit of the time we were hammered by Barca in the 90s under the 3 foreigner rule; Might well be the catalyst to better days. We have good young lads good on the ball coming through.

Sanchez looks good for a start on Sunday with that moustache.
Pretty much my thoughts, especially the ‘tache. Pogba has brought nothing for months. What does he offer? Shirked it massively tonight. Fred and McT looked like the only ones who can play a bit and can see the game in front of them.

We need lots of changes. Get the money in for Pogba, Sanchez, Lukaku. Promote the young players, Greenwood, Chong, mason etc. They will supplement McTominay, Dalot, Shaw, Rashford, Martial etc. Have faith in them as they find their way. Support them with 4/5 purchases. Train them. Coach them. Give them a pass next year. Let them find their feet and then push them on and then if needed push them out.
One more thing, Young, Matic, Rojo, Darmian must be gone from the club to create a place where youth will thrive.
Over to you Ed.

Just reminded me of the 2011 final against them.
A strong first 5-10mins, where we could have easily scored the first goal, and then reality kicking in and being played off the pitch. Even more so today than back then.

All in all, not really disappointed at all. We know we need a lot of work, so to beat arguably the best team in Europe was going to be a huge battle.
Just a shame that their two goals could have been avoided with a decent clearance and a once a season level massive error. And so close together too.
This is fair comment, too.

LVG's notebook
Their first goal completely against the run of play, knocked the stuffing out of us and effectively ended the tie.

Up until then they were rattled and we had two great chances. We were on top, and they looked vulnerable.

After Young's shitting brainfart our heads dropped, as did DDG's, leading to their second.

Winning tonight was always a fairytale, and winning any sort of silverware will remain so until we manage to defend better and become more clinical.

France - can't win anything with Swedish turnips
Started very well for 7 minutes or so.

Penalty that clearly was correctly not given but made us nervous.

Young as usual can't clear the first man and gifts the first goal.
DDG gifts the second goal and any confidence just ebbed out the side.
Pressing stopped.

Jones MoM for effort , Fred plenty of effort.
McTominay poor, Rashford disappeared after first few minutes, Pogba poor when frustrated.

Lingard just aimlessly running round in circles, what is the point, nothing to aim for, doesn't do anything , makes token run towards a defender but doesn't press - no attack. Go away.
Can't play with 10 men every match.

Outclassed.
Subs looking to the league as unlikely we would score 5 to say the least. Poor.

Young and Lingard did not deserve to play this game. Never on merit.

Ole's made two horrible starting 11 selections over the two legs. Playing players out of position. Luke Shaw at CB for the first time in his career against fecking Barcelona.

Lindelof playing right back when you have Dalot or could even play 352 with Young and Dalot?

This one's on Ole aswell. Can't always just e blinkered and blame the players.
Both Shaw and Lindelof did alright. While Ole did make some weird decisions, it’s not like he’s got much to pick from.

They play Barcelona. Chill out. Had we gone through we’d have been torn a new anus, at least we can hope Barca will do the job.

They have better players. Simple as that

Almost every player in their team has a superb first touch, and their movement off the ball is miles ahead of ours. The only way we get there is a perfect process of 5 years, leaving out players like young who are mid table level at best. Fergie years look farther than ever :(

I'll repeat myself for the millionth time but as long as the Glazers are owners and people like Woodward and his cronies run the club we will be shite. Fecking depressing.
Nonsense, Glazers almost spent more or less equal to City in last 6 years. They dont decide on players. Its a combo of cluster feck between Ed and Managers

How much money have we spent since the 2009 final to catch up with Barcelona? I remember we bought Ashley Young for this purpose. Obviously he makes Messi look like a sunday league footballer.

Genuine question, and this is not a knee-jerk thing; do you feel affiliated with our players? I haven't since Fergie left. I cannot sympathise with this lot, which stops me from holding back in the criticism. Not a single player seems fussed enough to convince me they actually care. I think it's group think, maybe the virus talk wasn't too far off the truth. Everyone relies on the next person's apathy.

  1. Watching tonight’s game and some of our recent performances I can see the making of a good team but, are there are some BIG buts. Firstly our summer success is all dependant on Ed Woodward and the board. If they truly want united back on top then they have to back OGS 100% and go all in, no half measures. If OGS has £200 million to spend then let him spend it and also spend whatever money we recoup from sales. Secondly sort out the futures of de gea, matic, Pogba, lukaku, Sanchez and rashford.

De gea - either sign a new deal or go, it’s that simple. If we sell him we should get £60 million

Pogba - do you want to stay or do you want to go? If you want to go then just leave with minimal fuss. Sell for £130 million.

Lukaku - don’t think he’s good enough so sell for £60 million

Rashford - sign now or again go. Think he will come good so tie him down to a new contract.

Matic - sell for £15 million. Too old and just not good enough

Sanchez - would have to go on the cheap to subsidise for his wages at whatever club in mad enough to take him. Sell for £10 million.

Also let Valencia, herrera and Rojo go as it will free up the best part of 250k per week in wages.

So with that if the board are serious about backing the manager then give him the £200 million + the £260 million from the above sales. That’s then £460 million for OGS to spend on re shaping the team in his image.

I would then hope with the amount of scouts we have around the world we would then have some idea on who to buy because if we got this wrong then I’m afraid we would fall into an abyss that we would not come out of for a long time.

Ask every fan who we should go for and I think every fan would give different opinions.

If it was me I’d buy the following:

    RB - valery/wan bissaka

    CB - Maguire & alderweireld

    CM - Rice/Kante & Fernandes

    RW - sancho/hudson-odoi

If we need to sign other position for the players mentioned above who might be sold I’d like to see the following:

    Sanchez replacement - Depay
    Lukaku replacement - Dybala
De Gea replacement - this would be a tough choice. Either dean Henderson as I think he’s done very well in the championship or I’d Madrid want De Gea then we could do a lot worse than courtois.

We could then have a potential line up of

    (GK)Henderson/Courtois

    (RB) Valery/wan bissaka. (CB)Maguire. (CB) Alderweireld. (LB)Shaw

    (DM) Rice/Kante (DM)Mc tomminay

    (AM) Fernandes

    (RW) Sancho/Odoi. (LW)Martial

    (ST) Rashford

Like I said it’s a big summer, no it’s a huge summer for our club. The board MUST decide to back the manager with everything they have and more if we are to return to the top. If they don’t want to back the manager then if we are honest what is the point in MUFC as this would be a clear indication that on field results are a distant second to our commercial activity off the pitch.

Barcelona are nothing special. We practically gifted them the game through Young and De Gea. Sucks to say but Liverpool and City are miles superior to Barcelona imo.

But I guess you're right in that the silver lining is we won't get bummed by Liverpool in Europe again.

We've already got money. We need to get rid of woodward so that we can start hiring based for footballing reasons and not marketing reasons.
This. Ed Woodward has tarnished the club and I hope David Gill either mentors him or gives him a piece of his mind.
A moneyman not even playing moneyball but playing marketingball.

Jesus Christ he wasn't the worst player on the pitch by a mile. Why singling him out?
Probably because he was as bad as anyone out there and has a reputation of 'the world's best midfielder' despite being made look shite by Scott McTominay and Fred in our two biggest games so far, that's why.

This will not be popular but in my opinion the board jumped the gun with Ole.Sure we went on a decent run but it was exaggerated, we beat teams we should be beating bar Spurs & Arsenal away, and we were blessed to beat Spurs.
Not blaming Ole just think it’s been yet another bad move by the board.
Regarding tonight’s game we were well beaten by a much better team.No complaints.
