The only thing I can think off as to why this may happen is that if Ole looks to buy maybe a De Ligt/Maguire/Koulibaly CB this summer, he may think it is a bit soon to give them the captaincy as soon as they walk through the door, hopefully he thinks rather than give it to a Pogba/Matic/Lindelof for the foreseeable future, he thinks if he give it to Young, who will be gone next summer, he can then pass it onto the new CB who would have a year under his belt and can be captain for some considerable time going forward.

If that is not the case, then it's baffling.

Remember SAF saying a title winning team needs 3 or 4 players of captain material through its spine to be able to win titles. He then went on to build these teams. Don't need to name these types of players he had because if you don't know you shouldn't be on these forums... this current United team has talent but a serious lack of leaders and if true that Ashley young is club captain then we're learning nothing from Fergies philosophy.

This is seriously not a big deal. We usually have the oldest player in the club as the captain. It's not like the captain has a greater role in the club or always starts games. We don't really have any other player who is an obvious choice so just making the oldest one the captain is a simple and safe option.

Sorry, I forget myself some times.
Ashley Youngs great, we're so lucky to have him. I can imagine City, Liverpool, Bayern, PSG, Real, Barca being very envious. Not expecting any bids though... Although, maybe Villa on a free.

Deep down, I'm just afraid it'll be excuse to keep playing him or not even look for another RB. I'm tired of seeing Young, he has his use but on the bench and used when needed (injuries/suspensions/rest)
This. 54 goals conceded last year. Young was a big part of that problem. I would like to think Ole isn't that stupid to risk his job by playing Young on a consistent basis. If the club keeps shipping goals, then Ole will do poorly and he won't last very long.

I don't agree with the panic, I think it's okay to keep him for one season as a backup to Luke Shaw, or backup to a new RB, depending on how Ole rates Dalot.
Further though, it could be worrying that no one (Pogba or De Gea for example) presents themselves as obvious canditates willing to take the armband, wanting to be our captain.
As I see it, Ole isn't to blame, it's just the obvious choice to give the captain's armband based on seniority, gives him one more season to evaluate who would be a really good captain for the long-term amongst our current squad.
We'll see who's frontrunner based on who takes the armband in Young's absence.

If only this is true..

The prev manager proved to not mind dropping 3 Captains each 3 season. The prev-prev manager and what we see from the current manager though... "my captain shall always play~." Hope Ole will prove me wrong.

If we keep Young as our main RB next season it will be clear that Ole is out of his depth. I'm sure Ole will remedy our RB position though, no way he's even remotely satisfied with how it looks now, right?

Sadly, knowing the club, we must assume that Young will be featured a lot next season. It really shouldn't come as a surprise if the line of thinking behind this is that Young's a seasoned veteran who can cover both FB positions and that in Dalot we have someone will fill in the right FB role in 20/21 and make it his for the next decade. Why bother with facts such as that Dalot is still an extremely raw FB who will probably have to be eased into the first xi during the next 3/4 years or that there are lots of question marks around Shaw's fitness for us to go into next season with him as our only viable option at LB? Why bother with looking at how much good two extremely athletic and exquisitely creative full-backs have done to Liverpool's game? Maybe consider thinking why the best manager in the world threw a bank at two new FBs when his side was already oozing with quality and told Neville/Carragher that now he will be able to stretch more easily teams that deploy a narrow 451? No, that's not what Manchester United needs.

What we "need", as Tyrion said, is a good story: Ferguson's old guard passing on the baton to fledgelings who will spend the entirety of their careers at OT. Why would they want to do that when we can't even offer CL football to them? Because... why not? And if the best ones feck off to greener pastures (De Gea, Pogba, Herrera) don't bother at all. There will always be vastly overrated and (sometimes) massively overpaid young(ish) players with the likes of Jones, Smalling and Young as their mentors.

I wholeheartedly disagree that Young can lead by example in the dressing room. Lead as an example of what? Being an absolute passenger in Ferguson's last title team and acting like he's a "been there, done that" character? Being an utter liability at FB positionally but always being named in the starting xi because he tries a lot in training? People with high aspirations in every working environment rarely like the former type and they quickly get tired of the latter because he holds everyone back. When we reward this particular type by offering him/them the captaincy, what message do we send out as a club?
I get that you want to rant about the fullbacks situation. Our recruitment in that area has been frustrating.

But our reported interest in signing a first team right back this summer does seem more concrete than the other positions. We might fail to do so because we are inept, but that's different from saying no one at the club understands the importance of having good fullbacks.

As far as the captaincy is concerned, it suggests that Young has been named on the basis that he will be out of the first team picture in near future, and his appointment allows the captaincy issue to be delayed until a more appropriate candidate shows up. That's an acknowledgement that we lack leaders at the club.

I think that's preferable to appointing someone based on footballing abilities. Does that breed mediocrity, which I think is the point you're making in the second paragraph (although it seems directed at something a different poster said, so I could be missing context here)?

I guess it depends on the player. Someone can either think "I don't wanna play for a team captained by Ashley Young", or conversely, "that guy isn't gonna be there for long, I can be the next captain", assuming that players even consider this in the first place.

As for whether he's a good example or not, I agree that a player shouldn't be an aspirational figure simply because he's won it in the past. If he does perform well in training, that actually would be a good example, but I have no way of knowing if it's true, and I don't think that's why he's been picked. He's been picked because he's a more reliable right back than Darmian or Dalot, despite being a former-winger-and-converted-left-back. This part is not exemplary either, although it does speak to his professional attitude.

By example, I meant he is a player who shows the same determination and effort on the pitch even when the game is not going well. He's willing to carry out instructions that will get him criticised by fans, which is a responsibility that a lot of other players shirk away from when we need goals.

Now you might say "What good is his on-field example if your whole point is based on the assumption that he won't be playing regularly?". To which I'll say "Fine, you got me there. I haven't thought that far. But is it really worse than having a captain who sets a bad example on the pitch when a game isn't going well?"

Edit: we don't club leaders; we lack them.

People need to chillax, given his years at the club and lack of other decent alternatives it makes sense, i reckon he'll barely feature next season and someone else will generally be wearing the armband.

Exactly why I have said I don't believe Ole has the guts to sort out the club and deal with the mediocre players. At least we're setting our standards so low next season no one will be surprised.

Ole strikes me a traditional manager in that a senior player will always wear the armband. I think he would give it to Pogba if it weren't so obvious that Pogba will move on in the next couple of years and then who else is there that's captain material? Young is basically a stop gap for him.

Personally would like to have seen Lindelof get it but, in fairness, who else should? We've got a bunch of old farts who we'll likely move on soon and some petulant kids.

First of all, i hope you're right and i'm wrong in that we'll sign at least one full-back in the coming transfer window. God knows we need one.

As for the rest, what i'm suggesting is that, at some point, we should start considering that it's in the club's best interests to clear out the dross and build a new side. There are players in our squad who get contract extensions for seemingly no other reason besides their seniority and the fact that they are part of a core that has witnessed our glory days from within. And they are handed the keys to the dressing room. What makes the situation problematic is that we're going nowhere with them.

Young's professionalism isn't at question here. His ability to perform at the highest level is. The fact that he's our best right-back should have long ago led the manager(s) to sign a proper full-back instead of giving him the armband. But here we are, ready for another season of Ashley Young. The knot has to be severed at some point if the club wants to move forward. We don't have leaders and we lack quality, yet some players seem to be unmovable.

Thanks.. Dont know how that helps?

Dont know how you were raised but I know my mom told me that if I couldnt say anything positive or constructive I shouldnt bother saying anything at all. I think me being off the Caf when Ashley Young captains Utd next season shouldnt really matter much as we will have enough people ready to spew poison over him, Ole and the club without me.

I have supported Utd since 84 and will keep on supporting Utd till I die but I really dont want to spend my time next season spewing profanities online every week, if you see that as supporting your club I guess you could do with a break too.
You're right. I also posted something not very nice, and I will delete. I will state this instead: Ashley Young is one of the few players that will fight for the badge. That is worth something and unfortunately these days we cannot take that for granted. He was a decent winger on his day but once he wasn't quick enough or good enough, we should have replaced him. Simple. Instead, due to our lack of transfer nous, we "converted" him to a left back. And he wasn't terrible actually. Not great - but workable as a stop gap. He's a professional i'll give you that. On the right, he is actually pretty bad. The fact that he plays RB for United in any games is a damning reality check for the state of the squad. I will always appreciate his fight for United but we absolutely must have a better RB playing and him being captain to me says he will play often and that is just not acceptable. Means we are going in the wrong direction when this is the season to turn the ship around completely. So no offense to Young, but this is bad.

I agree with most of your points here. I think the main difference of opinion is that I see Young's appointment as a placeholder for a future leader, and you see it as reward for his seniority and thus symbolic of the club's inability to move forward.

We have a history of the latter, so I understand where you are coming from. But this is Solskjaer's first summer. I'm prepared to give him the benefit of doubt because he reportedly wants a clear-out and has said that he wants to bring in players who have the right mentality.

Well he disrespects us with his performances, I really feel for the ST holders. Former capitals never took the p!ss like he has this season! I understand he doesn’t pick himself but he should have done a G Nev and called it a day, especially as he’s 34!

Ps I just saw the white text now!! I bit the bullet, not ashamed in admitting it either.

Nothing against the guy personally, it's not our fault he's shit at football though. I agree the vitriol should be aimed at Woodward and Ole for giving him a new contract & starting him every week as captain though. I don't blame the man himself for not saying "No lads, don't pay me 100k a week and give me the armband, don't you realise I'm shit?"

Truth be told he was a pretty good winger in his prime, which was about 7-8 years ago, then he became a criminally average winger, then a relatively reliable full-back, and now he's a clearly past it full-back with barely any redeemable qualities who actively weakens us when he plays. To be completely honest we probably should've shipped him in about 2015. He would probably be back at Watford by now, or possibly lower.

Just spotted your white text haha. Whatever, I stand by my message

If he's actually captain I'm not even going to watch games.
This is where I stand too. Only way I have a change of mind is if he is a nominal captain like Valencia was last season. Ffs He should not be in our line up anymore let alone be our captain.

Youngy will be first choice RB again, mark my words. The board aren't backing Ole.....he will be lucky yo get £75m to spend on kids. And he'll tell the fans that it's the United way.

How is this guy even playing professional football, let alone captaining United. The guys face just makes my blood boil. Any of us could get the ball, turn back, turn forward then loft it to the opposition 99/100 times.

He should have gone way before Fellaini and that's saying something.

Well he'd stand no chance then, and would be better just walking now, but I'd take it just as long as Woody follows Ole down the drain at the same.
