"Manchester United, the one who blew Madrid out of the water 3 years ago have joined the server."

We all know Woodward lives for these sorts of moments. In time a player like De Ligt is available, I trust Woodward to hit the panic button and get Mbappe/Neymar money ready. We all mock his "Adult Disneyland" idea but if there's one aspect of it that I respect, it would be the habit of blowing oppositions away. Madrid was 3 years ago. Now Barcelona may well follow the same suit. The two powerhouses of Liga, of Europe...all blown away on the transfer market by the Manchester United who has been in disarray for 6 years.

This is the sort of story Woodward is in love with. And admit it, you muppets love it also despite the hate Woodward gets (rightfully, though).
Just need De Ligt to give Woody the green light.

I genuinely don't think we have a chance of signing De Ligt, however Ole may as well pay him a personal visit before he heads off with Holland to the Nations League.

Just outline how he will be the figurehead of the Utd defence and the first piece of a new look team.

We did that multiple times even prior to Woodward. We outspent on Rooney, we outspent on Rio and we outspent on Ronaldo. I still remember the Italian pundits being shocked about us spending 12m on some thin 18 year old Portuguese who would take the ball and dribble himself to the corner flag

We need to acknowledge that we're at the outskirts of world football and that players would rather go to Spain or Italy if given the same salaries and conditions. Therefore our only way to get them is to offer more then the rest.

I doubt it. People creamed themselves at many of his signings but because they were shite he’s been criticised for them.
This is the part that piss me off. The players failed to perform for only god knows why and suddenly he’s an idiot banker and not a football man.

Is there any credible sources that says we're even close to getting him? People are just linking us to him because it'll drive the price up and we're desperate for young players who can immediately contribute.

I have no doubt de ligt and/or Raiola are using us to get a better deal from barca. The part I'm not sure is if we are genuinely trying to get him. I can't see this happening.

We'd be doing something wrong if we at least don't try to get him. He's quite clearly above every other CB talent right now and not trying to get him would be unthinkable.

Only if he performs . Ed has brought in plenty of players our previous managers wanted and that people thought were brilliant
Schweinsteiger
Di Maria
Sanchez
Pogba
Depay
Martial
Lindelof
Dalot
Lukaku
Bailey
Falcao
Zlatan
Darmian
Daley Blind

Amongst the rest alot of talent there but if they dont perform we will still question Ed .
Lindelof is good and going to get better. I wan unaware woody brought in Gary Bailey

We've offered him €14m wage and are considered among the front runners to sign him according to Barcelona based Sport.es

What we need now is the Dutch media to give us the news that we've been hoping for. Because that's where we're gonna hear something definitive IMO. De Telegraaf or VI will end this one way or the other.

Pretty risky giving that sort of money to a player so young. It might have a negative impact. But I’d prefer to see us try to get players that quality and age and take that chance than punt a load of £ on some 29 year old’s last contract.

I thought I read that was the first offer that he turned down. We’ve improved on that €14 mil I believe I read.

I hope the bit about the ultimatum is true. There's every chance we're a pawn in his chess game with Barca so it'd be good to see us move on quickly if there was nothing in it.

You're correct. He turned down the first offer of €14m a year and we've improved that significantly according to Catalan daily Sport.

I still don't think we're favourites, but we are putting Barca under serious pressure by offering him a shit tonne of cash.

That sort of offer shows how badly we want him, Barca will need to stump it up to prove they want him just as much - can they do it? Will they have to sell first?

Let's hope they start feeling the deal won't be financially worth it and it gives us the advantage. Maybe VDS will put in a nice word too ;)

He will earn about £300k a week if we sign him. Not a bad wage for a 19 year old.

He’s a future defensive icon.
This the one time where throwing money at a player is actually needed.

He’s a leader, and could potentially be our shining light in our revival. Hope Van Der Sar has been in his ear telling me some sweet, sweet nothing about us.

I think, in a financial sense, we left Barcelona behind long ago. Seems to be fairly consistently reported that Barca can't throw money at it but are helped by the fact that Ajax aren't demanding mad money and hope De Ligt will join them for footballing reasons.

Maybe De Ligt's thought process is that if we offer a bit more he chooses Barca, but if we come up with a huge amount of money and really dwarf Barca's offer, he'll join us.

Who knows, can only wait now and hope for the best.

At least we are giving it a proper go. Happy that we are going for the right players.

No doubt we will be paying Raiola more too, we've kept him fairly happy recently so let's hope he will be pointing him in our direction also.

It's pretty obvious for football reasons (Messi/De Jong/Cruyff+instant trophies) Barca are favourites, but maybe he would prefer more of a challenge?

I just hope we can sell to him that we have big plans and won't be lounging around 6th place for long. We need a huge summer to give us a head start.

Because he is a defender there is probably a sense by a lot of people that he isn’t worth 300k a week. But he is effectively the defensive version of Mbappe wh gets 290k a week.

Now do I think clubs should be offering that kind of cash to 19 yr olds no, but it’s the way of the land now and I’d much rather pay DeLigt that than pay Sanchez 375k a week.

The problem would be now, if you go after Sancho or Felix how much do they want a week and how are Martial and Rashford going to feel.

Am I missing something here?

Ole's who 'thing' is that most of players not care enough/work hard enough as they are here for the money or heart. Offering this 20 year old wages to that equalling Pogba (world cup winner and Serie A winner) is very contradictory.

Yes he does seem to have a leadership mentality, but what has he got to aspire to if he has all the money he needs?

This is the crazy thing, if a player starts earning that much when they’re 19, and every new contract probably sees them with a raise. How much will they be earning when they get to 30?

We’re just being used to get better terms at Barca, sounds like we have at least tried which is fair enough as long as we have alternative plans.

Come on guys I doubt he’s getting £300k a week.

Probably a lot of incentives and of course the signing on fee which him and his agent will probably get.

If reports are true then at least it shows we're trying to make first team signings rather than signing squad/reserve players.

But I highly doubt he'd come here.

More money and also trophies.

You can balance that out by integrating youth. I've been vocal about this strategy for a while and why I was really irritated with the Jones new contract news.
