Would Liverpool risk upsetting VVD by making him the 2nd most expensive CB by signing his younger international team mate? Doubt it. They apparently don't want another CB and with Gomez you can see why. He's a great talent too.

City could be in for him but they don't usually go in that high per player and the fact Raiola is his agent means it's very unlikely he will go to City as their board have apparently don't like dealing with the guy at all.

Lots of rumours that we have put world record money on table and nobody else is matching it thus far.

Hopefully we can get this lad. Would be a brilliant coup for us after the season we just had.

Nobody underrates the size and scope of Man Utd better than this forum does.
You'd think we were trying to convince him to join Palace with the amount of why come here? Posts in this thread.

I hear what you are saying, but Barca want him and they are head and shoulders above us. We may, however, be able to offer him a bigger salary.

We are probably being used as leverage here, but feck it my inner muppet wants to break free here!

If we sack off some of the deadwood his wages aren't an issue. Huge statement from the club if they manage to get him in.

He's 19...surely his wages won't be a problem or anywhere near a problem? This throwing massive money has to stop we find out what Barca and co are offering and we add 10%. If he still doesn't want to come he's not really what we need.

What is it with the current fashion of claiming players are only coming to United because of the money?

Do they think a 19 y/o is going sign a big contract then say ‘I’m just going to play shit now’.

Do they think players only have one team they want to play for and if they don’t get that team they’re only in it for the money?

Do people think the allure of playing for Barcelona is that great that they don’t spend 80% of turnover on wages? That they don’t pay Messi around £1m per week because he’d be happy to stay for a fraction of that if he had to?

If Barca can't afford him the season and he has his heart set on joining them I can see him staying at Ajax for another season and going next season.

He will accept a lower offer to join a champions league club. We are being used as a negotiating tool

Still can't see it happening but you would imagine that the chance to come in and captain United, a team in decline and desperately needing a shake-up, might be tempting for him (that and a shit load of money!). If we can't get him CL in the next 2 seasons then we let him go.

Could very well be what happens.

However I'd be livid if we don't try to do everything we can to get him. If he chooses to wait for Barca then we move on. That's his choice.

We should be offering him the bloody world though. He's exactly what we need and he's 19 ffs. The lad has 15 years at the top if he stays fit.

Or do a Pogba and use us a stepping stone whilst getting himself and his agent a truck load of cash?

I feel we should send our youth players like Gomes and Chong to Ajax for some experience. Playing for the u23s does absolute jack to improve them.

Pool don't need him:
Robertson - Gomez - VvD - TAA
They are in a good place in defense.
I also think I read Klopp commenting on him that they aren't looking for a defender.

Barca can likely not afford him on his current demands because they are looking to add Griezmann on top of Frenkie. Reports said they want to get rid of Umtiti to make space for De Ligt, but Umtiti has gone out and said (if I remember correctly) that he doesn't want to move. So unless he decides to take much less money to go to them then he won't go there.

That leaves us & City really, we certainly need him and can afford him. City can clearly pay enough for him over or under the table and could do with him now that Kompany has left them. The question there would be if he would accept being more rotation alternative there because of Stones and Laporte already playing well, not that he couldn't get the spot but in the Barca rumors it's mentioned that he wants to be a key-player.

I don't think it's realistic that we get him, but it's certainly not impossible when looking at what has been written so far.

I think if we manage to bond with De Ligt, he will develop a more stronger relationship with us fans which may even lead him to stay over here. Pogba's loyalty is very questionable. He was touted to Pep and neither has he or his agent come out and dismissed those rumors. Pogba just doesn't connect with the United fans. When we have important matches with Man City or Liverpool, you'll see Pogba going around hugging the opposition before the game whereas De Ligt wouldn't do that prior to the game. De Ligt is a born leader. Pogba just isn't

I do agree but if there's a time to bag De Ligt, it's now or never. I don't think Pep would like to deal with Raiola as well.

Absolutely, if we don't get him now then I think we won't ever get him. After all, top defenders don't tend to move around until after their prime.

I believe he will get the cash from Barca or that he'll reduce his demands to join them, but bar that I'll be disappointed if i read from reputable sources that he goes to someone else because they offered more money or because we already have tons of average defenders.

Pogba no relationship with the fans? Not true at all. It's clear he has love for Man United. Beckham also loved United but left for Madrid.

this thread will end in tears and cries of I didn't want him anyway

brace yourselves muppets....it's the hope that kills you

Dude.... You just can't compare Beckham and Pogba. Beckham didn't want to be sold to Real Madrid. He fell out with Fergie which led to that. Pogba moved to Juve willingly and is trying to orchestrate a move once again. We were always a stepping stone for him. If Beckham had fixed things with Fergie back then, he would have also been one the greats with 500+ games

Becks was sold behind his back? Something you rarely here clubs doing....

Agree with most points but when City come I doubt we can compete with that.

Kompany is gone and he's already better than Stones, arguably Laporte as well. On top of that he's the exact type of defender Pep would want. Kompany also left a big salary void that they can easily throw at him, as he's no doubt be a key defender in the future.

Not sure why Real aren't interested as well, will slot right in and they have money.

I don't think we can compete/blow city out of the water in terms of money and challenging for trophies, which is why I mentioned the rumors of him being unhappy with not being seen as a key figure at Barca and City already having a functioning pair of CBs as a reasoning to pick us over them. :)

Accept it's not. Barca have highest wage bill in the world and is 80% of their turnover. They have added De Jong and looks like Griezmann too.

They can't afford all 3 this summer
Both parties playing games. He will end up at Barca.

Doubt they’d improve Ajax however. They’re arguably better than us at the moment.

I dont think you could argue against that. Pogba and DDG would get into the Ajax team and DDG doesnt fit their style so that isnt even a certainty.

Chris Smalling is the opposite of a Ajax defender because he cant play football, Rashford cant pass and shoots when he gets the ball so that doesnt fit their style. Ajax describes their ideal centre forward as 'a complete number 9 who can play with his back to the goal' so no way they would want Lukaku.

Their rightback is pretty shit with Mazraoui/Veltman/Kristensen but atleast it is not ancient former winger Ashley Young...

De Ligt would be an upgrade over any United centreback, de Jong over Matic, van de Beek over Herrera, Ziyech over JLingz/Mata and maybe even Tadic over current Rashford or Lukaku.

I think Real not being mentioned has a bit to do with them earlier feeling certain that he'll go to Barca, and didn't want to appear as if they lost to them on a transfer. Other than that there is the fact that Real need heavy investments in other parts of their squad as well. They can go for another year of Ramos & Varane, and they signed Militao. They can't go another year without a new top attacker after their terrible season or a midfielder. They might need a left-back as well, I'm not entirely sure how they are performing or if they have signed someone.

Does this sound completely off, @carvajal?

Isn't the rumors that he won't be seen as a key figure a bit bollocks? IMO he's dead cert to be one of the starting CB's next season, despite his young age..

Think they can do with both. Just need to find some idiots to get Bale off their books (for example us)

If this actually happens it'll be a massive statement of the clubs intentions. Get the best prospects and trust them to grow into superstars.

This type of signing could have a massive impact on the likes of Pogba and DDG deciding their futures.

In Ed we trust!
