Hope he has broad shoulders to be English football's biggest scapegoat after Pogba leaves.
This is almost a certainty. There's too many deadwoods here that has been stinking the place out for years but the fans always blames the newest players because it's easy target.. I couldn't even begin to imagine what will happen if we signed him. He'll be blamed on every goal we concede.

So you don’t rate VVD as the best center back in the world then, how highly do you rate him? I’m pretty sure most people view him as the best in the world. Strange opinion to be honest, he’s had an excellent season. I don’t think he has been dribbled past once. Been crucial in taking Pool to the CL final. Not only defensively, but that assist he had to Mane vs Bayern was something else.
VVD is excellent but in the end a "basic" defender who takes the ball from the attacker, and then gives it to a more creative player to proceed the build-up. On top of that he can give a great long ball, is a leader, can head in a goal etc.

De Ligt can do all that but is on a higher trajectory. And he's a much more complete footballer. In the Dutch team, VVD gives the ball to De Ligt, if you catch my drift.

If we do sign him, I hope we don't frustrate him by insisting he plays with dross.

If this deal goes through and he does get a minimum of 250k per week, what is this going to do to our wage structure? Everyone will be demanding as much or even more. I am sure Rashford, Pogba and De Gea will want just as much. This doesn't include an new players that we may get. This is tricky business which Woodward needs to get a control of. He needs to get rid of Sanchez asap to have a chance of retaining balance.
It’s not ‘our’ wage structure, it’s ‘THE’ wage structure. As in, top end players earn upwards of £200k p/w. Why would we, who are at the top end of the food chain financially, be amongst those who pay that sort of money?

In the Dutch team everyone gives the ball to Memphis honestly.

And it's impossible to say De Ligt is better than Van Dijk since De Ligt plays in a joke league and you can hardly judge him on a few CL games.

Really? I have probably not watched De Ligt as much as you have, but I was under the impression that VVD was better on the ball than him. And I’m not saying I haven’t noticed De Ligts ability on the ball, but VVD is really good with the ball.

It is only fair that RAWK has a De Ligt thread they bump everytime we concede.

Neither are amazing on the ball, Id say they're similar. Both give the ball to De Jong.

De Ligt at 19 is infinitely better than Van Dijk at 19 though.

Still not convinced, this is probably going to take weeks like the Pogba transfer. When is he returning from international duty?

What CBs do you consider amazing on the ball if they are not?
Beckenbauer?:nervous:

Don't get me wrong, Im not saying they're the type to clear everything that moves, but it's their physical presence that sets them apart mostly if you ask me. The aerial presence and decent footballing abilities complete the package, but isnt their main asset I think.

That's also why Blind makes such a great partner for De Ligt.

I assume OGS has had a lengthy conversation with De Ligt about his plans for Utd
And if it looks like the OGS isn't either good enough to implement his plans, or his plans aren't good enough themselves the club needs to help the talent they're investing in. By getting rid of him promptly.

Rather than wasting another year or half a year, like the time we wasted on Mourinho and co.

To think we missed out on Hazard because we baulked at his agent's demand of £6m.

Times have certainly changed.
We missed out on quite a few under David Gill. Benzema was another that joined Madrid even though it was widely reported we wanted him too.

Woodward might not be everyone's cup of tea. But in a situation where we're up against the likes of Barca and Madrid, he delivers compared to Gill.

Not saying we'll get De Ligt. But I'm alot more confident with Woodward leading the way in such a scenario than David Gill.

Surely there's going to be some big departures here. Our wage structure is going to be out of control.

De Ligt is two-footed and actually was responsible for our build-up a lot last season when opposition were nullifying De Jong (as the other centreback) by ganging up on him. He was actually a midfielder until 4 years ago, see:

Also as I showed earlier:

plus he has this in him as well

and

Ok I've got home from the pub and this thread has grown by 20 pages. Can somebody with a brain please tell me if this is in any way justified?

@Damien you'll do...

Of course they are all aiming to play De Jong ;)

I don't think our opinions are all that different (although De Ligt does a lot of build-up because they cover Frenkie), i.e. if you've seen De Ligt play regularly and not just highlights, he's obviously a bigger talent than VVD. And also obviously VVD is currently at a more advanced stage in his career, at the very top level, which De Ligt still has to prove.

Nothing justified, but more reports being written that seem to all point back to the RAC article.

VVD is better, but De Ligt has more potential.
De Ligt is also better on the ball.

He started as midfielder in the youth academy (like Pique). Technically a beast for such a big dude.

Seen him play numerous times in the U17 and U19 team at the toekomst (youth complex of Ajax). And hes better on the ball than you might think.

Yeah for sure. De Ligt is the best 19 year old Ive ever seen bar Messi.
