There are only 2 other players that I would be more excited that we sign. Messi and Ronaldo. And I am not sure about the latter.

It is on boys. He is ours.

I can see how he would be interested in being a new legend at the club here. At Barca you always have pique and Messi. And if has grown up following EPL with us having Van Der Sar, Rio, I can see this being his childhood dream come true.

C'mon son!

The simple truth is if we are offering more, willing to pay Raiola, and Barca won't commit, it shouldn't shock anyone that he might come.

When we get into money fights, we usually win. I don't think De Ligt has any "boyhood dream" about playing from the bench for barca, and likely doesn't have that feeling about MUFC either.

What we have is money. Woodward has slapped his cock down on the table and barca are balking. If Barca don't play ball we can get him. If they up their offer a bit and find a middle ground, he'll likely go there.

Barça has a pretty impressive history of Dutch players... Quite comfortably more than us; i.e. Koeman, Cruijf, de Boer, Van Bommel, Davids, Overmars, Kluivert, Cocu, etc. etc... seems we ve had some greats and quite a few duds as well.
I would rule half those out as legends as some only won as much as 1 league title for them. And none won the world cup so we don't need to go down that route.

Was Davids even a Barcelona player? Possibly on loan but did they actually sign him?

United had VDS who not only won a few league titles, he got into 3 CL finals, winning one of them.

Stam was also a CL winner with us in a different year.

RVP has one great season on par with some of those legends you named above.

Van Nistelrooy?

Blind won the Europa cup which was 1 more cup than half those too.

Even Arnold Muhren played for us after winning 3 European cups with Ajax.

Not saying Barcelona didn't have a better pick of legends, let's not understate our own just because their names didn't light up Panini stickers at the time.

I really like Dutch defenders/players at our club. They generally seem to do well for us.

Stam, Blind, Van Nistelroy, Van Persie

Memphis was crap but that’s an outlier.
Dutch players tend to do well in the EPL in general.

Would love to have this little bastard playing for us.

If United sign Matthijs de Ligt best day to announce the deal is after Champions League final. Piss on Scousers or Spurs parade.

Barca seem to run a three tier wage system, Messi, the other top players who aren't Messi and the guys who Barca reckon should feel lucky to be there. If de ligt went there from Ajax on low wages he might find it difficult to work his way upwards. Barca also don't seem inclined to splash out huge transfer fees and wages on centre backs. More often than not they seem to play converted midfielders there.

How?

Even if Liverpool win and we announce De Ligt, I’d still be depressed at the sight of it. At the end of the day in football winning trophies and not signing players what matters. We can announce Messi on that day but it wouldn’t make a difference to Liverpool fans if they win their 6th European cup.

And I know many here have an inferiority complex about Barca and Real but, if you are a great CB you probably want to play in England. Virgil Van Dijk just won the Player of the Year award John Terry won it in the past. The likes of Adams, Stam, Campbell, Rio, Terry, Vidic , Kompany and now Van Dijk are some of the biggest icons of the PL era. England seems to be the country that respects the CB the most with Italy second.
And pays accordingly it should be added.

United are still massive despite a few lean years. Signing a top player would in some ways reduce Liverpool/Spurs media coverage.

God I love the smell of a good cock analogy during Muppet season! It smells like victory!

All indications are that they were ready to pay a similar fee to what they forked out for de jong. I doubt they'd do that only to put him on 50K or even 100K per week. If the rumors about United offering 350K GBP per week are remotely close to the real number, I wouldn't say that Barcelona are lowballing him by not matching it. It seems to me that United just have more money to spend on him, which isn't surprise given each club's wage bills and recent transfer spending. Only time will tell which situation he prefers.

De Ligt is two-footed and actually was responsible for our build-up a lot last season when opposition were nullifying De Jong (as the other centreback) by ganging up on him. He was actually a midfielder until 4 years ago, see:

Also as I showed earlier:

and
and
etc
How refreshing is it to see a centre back that doesn’t throw the body shapes that smalling does trying to pass a football..

All indications suggest Barca won't break their structure for him. Raiola doesn't care about wage structures, He's phoned woodward and told him the situation. Woodward has likely beaten those terms handsomely, and Raiola has then gone back to Barca and said De Ligt has a better offer.

That has caused the Barca insiders to reach out to journo's like Romero which is why we now see barca briefing about it all being up the in the air because our offer is better for the player and agent.

Barca are likely balking at significantly outspending and over committing to a CB that is likely a bench player in 2019-2020.

If we could get Ibrahima Konata and De Ligt, our CB partnership would be set for the next 15 years.

Eh, I don't think De Ligt is a bench player for them, but I agree that he isn't a lock starter. I think the bigger issue for them is that they're deep in debt now. I don't have a source on hand for this, but I believe they have the highest wage bill in Europe, and spend the highest percentage of their revenue on player wages.

If I'm Woodward, I wouldn't be scared about paying a big transfer fee, but I would be hesitant to put De Ligt on bigger wages than whatever guys like De Gea and Pogba are on now.

De Ligt seems like a safe bet to be a very good player over time, but chances are he has a few ups and downs in his first couple years in the Premier League. I wouldn't want other players who aren't truly world class using his wages in negotiating, and continuing the problems that seem to be stemming from Sanchez's contract.

Obviously we would all love him to come here but realistically our clubs name is being used just to get him a better contract at Barcelona.

Just accept that so we don’t get some explosion of aggression trying to blame the club for not going in for him.

I find it quite amusing aeeing people moan about the speculated fee/wages for him. I personally don't care what we pay him despite his age because...

A) If you're good enough, you're old enough and deserve to be paid for your contribution regardless of your age.

B) The money in football is ridiculous and has been for years. It's not even shocking anymore to see how much even average players get paid. Until you boycott the game you cant really complain about their wages.

C) We aren't exactly in a position where we can upstage other clubs other than to offer such lucrative contracts.

When all is said and done, it's just money which is not any of ours.

Do they? Cruyff of course was a legend and Koeman did well. However most were either meah or utterly shit (Kluivert, Bogarde, Reizeger) etc. Most of United's dutch contingent did extremely well. Stam, RVN, RVP and VDS. Muhren did fairly well as well. If you remove the youths (Chong and TFM) out of the equation then out of 10 players then 6 did very well, one was meah and just 2 failed to make an impact (Jordi Cruyff and Memphis)

The real question should be if De Ligt has the talent to break Smalling-Jones duo.

when we have been mentioned as the second club recently, we usually get the man.

Secondly, you're assuming barca are going to up the offer. As the De Jong signing highlighted, they sold him on the project, not a wage increase. They refused to break their structure for de Jong and were lucky he didn't go to PSG.

His profile says he is a voice actor.
Yeah I checked it out. He doesn’t usually post about football so could be genuinely passing info on. Anyway, I’m trying my best not to get sucked in. I don’t want my heart broken.

I don’t understand why he would come to us unless it’s either money-driven or we have convinced him of the project going forward. If he is a young player with big ambitions, coming here would be the last thing he should do.
