I swear I read the same comments on Lingard previously it's a deja vu.

So at what age a player stops becoming a "youngster" and "young talent" ?
Do we really care what tag people put on it?

I suppose the only sensible definition would be whether they qualify for the PFA Young Player of the Year award - which is 23 and under at the start of the season, which he fits into.

Amidst a succession of big money signings who are perceived to not put in the required effort (Di Maria, Martial, Pogba etc) it's easy to start overvaluing less talented players who merely "understood the values of playing for this club".

If we continue to be so precious about the past then the future will look very dim indeed. Other clubs with lesser histories are still perfectly capable of picking up players who combine both work rate and talent in spades - see City's latest acquisition in Rodri.

Feck me, sorry Phil Jones, Mata, Young and now this? What is Ole thinking? Technically is good but has neither the pace or the power to be effective in the Prem and always thought he was better suited to Spanish football. Clear sign to me that whilst Ole might have a few quid to buy players, he's been told to get the most out of what's already here....no surprise Pogs wants to leave.

Awful awful decision he's never stepped up to the level we all hoped nor will he ever do so in a year or two he'll be in the "deadwood" category and it has possibly killed off chances of signing Bruno Fernandes another shocking decision by the club

So next year he won't be a "youngster" anymore ? Ok.

I think he has the potential to surprise a few people to be honest.

I have seen a few glimpses of quality from him, and I do think he has more in his locker.

It does feel like he hasn't really had a consistent amount of opportunities in our somewhat dysfunctional first team, so I am curious to see how he gets on.

I also feel that if he was playing consistently in a functional team e.g. Wolves or Leicester, there would probably be people on here clamouring for us to sign him.

Let's see how he gets on anyway, but if some of you want to go ahead and be dramatic over this contract renewal and throw a hissy fit, then by all means go for it too.

No risk losing him for free then, supposedly he only got 6 months left before this. Fail to perform and maybe we can sell him for min 10m?

I want him to put in a shift every game consistently (he don't) and becoming at least a useful squad player (no signs of that).

Disappointing so far tbh.
Those are literally the things you can't criticise him for

23 years old is considered a youngster now ? It's like another case of Lingard.

23 is a perfectly normal age for a young footballer.

Luka Modrić came from Dinamo Zagreb to Tottenham at the age of 22, became a regular first team player at 23 and won the best player award
years later.

I'm not saying Andreas is gonna do the same, but he has the skill set, he can turn, hold the ball, make a good pass, and has a good shot on him.

If the coaching staff can find a way to make him a first team player, that would be great.

I think he just needs more playing time. He'll deliver.

Good. Hopefully the likes of Dalot and Lingard next, we need our 21-22 year olds tied down on longer deals.

He's a squad player, nothing to be unhappy about.

He's got the ability to score some great goals and dictate the tempo of midfield when at his best, but his lack of acceleration and his niggly fouls let him down a bit.

Better than him walking on a free deal anyway.
Yeah, nothing to be happy about either. He will be a squad player and he will be sold if not good enough for that. Doubt he would be on high wages.

Below 21: very young
21-24: young
25-28: peak
29-32: experienced (for some, too old)
33 and older: old player (for some, still great)

The irony is that's exactly why Ole was given the job....understood the values etc. Whatever happened to being talented ?

People saying how its good due value next summer when we sell him. Hmm where i heard that before, ah i know, same thing was said when Jones extended his contract.
Apparently Ole has given a long list of deadwood players to Woodward that he wants sold by August 2020...it's obviously no where near as long as my list...!! ;)

Just another smokescreen parading as a new signing....

I wouldn't have given both Mata and Pereira a contract renewal. Pereira is somewhat understandable considering he has age on his side to be a solid squad player or even more but with Mata it does not make sense. We are just having bodies for the sake of it. Anyways big season ahead for periera. Hope he does well.

I don't know why so many are complaining about this. He could still turn out to be a useful player and if not it won't be that hard to sell him either.

I'm not surprised based on his running stats last season and the type of team Ole says he wants to build. Not sure he'll be starting but as an option yes

Agreed. I'm happy he's got a new deal, I'd obviously like him to kick on and be a useful part of the squad but if he moves elsewhere at least we'll get a good fee.

Talented player gets contract extension and everyone is up in arms!
Really don't get what has happened to our fanbase when a player like Pereira gets this much hate for getting a new contract.
The guys talented, has scored good goals for us and works hard, he's not the best player ever admittedly but definitely one deserving of a new contract.

I'm actually quite pleased with this. He's a kid with growing confidence, still young at 23 and can cover multiple positions (DM, CM, CAM, LW) whilst being homegrown. Plenty of time to continue improving.

Currently a more-than-decent squad player and at worst we've protected his future value in terms of selling him on for a fee rather than lose for free. No complaints whatsoever.

At his current level would he start for any club in the top half?
I'm not sure more than three of our players would.
Let's give him a chance under the new system. He might surprise us.

Why do we hear of yet another contract renewal being worked on during a vital transfer window?
Playing the long game on transfers gives you lots of spare time.

It's a standard tactic. Delay 2nd bids to show a limit on interest above the initial offer

Honestly forgot about him being here! I wonder if Solskjær will play him further up much more this season especially since Herrera is gone

I rate him. I know most on here think he is shite or average, but he cant get it knitted together. He is very nervous and it shows.

The way he wants to play as a midfielder and the way he plays as one are two different things unfortunately. He has some technical talent, a great right foot for a cross or shot and is working hard at times, but he needs to calm down on the ball and his decision making was awful last year, too eager to impress forgetting the basics.

He is a decent squad player for now, but someone who may not be here in a year or two if he doesnt improve.

Hopefully just used as a rotation player, but has the potential to become a solid player. Still need new Cm's though...

Aah, okie dokie.

I'd have preferred a sale with buy-back clause but I guess with his contract running out that would have been tricky.

Still believe he has potential to be a useful squad player but he has to step it up this year for me.

He did show some fight last season when others weren't and scored a decent goal.

He's ok but we haven't seen that much of him. Maybe he can be a late bloomer. I feel he's one of those Coutinho type players that's hard to find a place for.

Happy enough with this. He's got a good attitude and does have some talent.

His biggest problem in recent years has been having no fixed position. He came through at United as an attacking midfielder, on loan deals he was often used as a winger, Mourinho tried to convert him to a DM. I don't see him ever really kicking on until this is sorted.

Makes sense extended his contract given he could walk for nothing in 12 months. We've never been short of loan offers for him so I would imagine the option to make some money on him next summer will be an option. He'll never be good enough to start for us that's for sure

For the first time in his United career he has timing on his side, we are weak in midfield and lost Fellaini/Herrera in 6 months. Don’t think he’s that good but let’s see what he’s got. He’s got work rate but not sure about anything else at top level.
