Some people in here are criminally under rating Maguire, the comments saying hes not better or not much better than Smalling and Jones are hilarious, whens the last time those two got near an england squad??? Can anyone tell me what english centrebacks are in front of Jones and Smalling?..

Maguires a top 5 centre back in this league, hes englands best centre back , get your heads out your arse, Jones and Smalling are massive weaknesses in this team, Maguire is a huge improvement on them.

With Magure and Wan Bissaka we ve improve our defence hugely
John Stones starts for England. Only Rojo in our team is a worse defender than Stones.

Nonchalantly scoring the winner...
Can just picture Mourinho walking 'round doing that hand to ear gesture... haha

Why the feck didn't we just sign him last Summer...?

But very glad he's coming (hopefully), I think he'll be a great signing.

We always seem to win our bidding wars with City. The players however end up being useless ( Sanchez, Fred) and City have the last laugh! Maguire to break the mould or follow suit?
We need to stop thinking that Maguire will be anything like VVD. That one is a pipe dream. But Maguire is a proven, solid defender, known entity in the context of Premier League, and he will be able to improve the worst defensive line of last year's league. So, for us given the choices - low risk, clear-ish win. Is that worth 80M? Well, if it isn't then we should have bought Diop, but rumor has it West Ham refused to sell Diop so - what can you do when that happens?

Not convinced it improves us hugely but we did need a 3rd reliable CB along with Lindelof and Smalling. Hopefilly Rojo and Bailly get moved on
Bailly is a 25 year old who has struggled a bit with his fitness over the last two years. Why are we so ready to move him on? Between he, Jones and Rojo, Bailly still has the highest ceiling and is younger than the other two by two years. He has needed pace. I’d like the club retain his services to see if he can turn it around once he’s fully fit.

Take the hit, move on. For his flaws, he has obvious qualities that will improve us.

Good on the floor :check:
Good in the air :check:

Already better than anything we have in that case.

He's a big improvement for us I think. We've been shambolic at the back, and I think Maguire - Lindelof is a good foundation to build from.

Fantastic at bringing the ball out but not a great defender is what you are getting, Jonny Evans is head and shoulders ahead of him as a defender.

Think the part in bold in is something which may irritate a few fans, the fact that we could spend that much money but don't.
Spend it on.. what? And who? This notion of spending money to spend needs to stop.

First off: £250 million is not "easy spending" It's almost the entirety of the clubs available money in the bank. I've written several long-ass posts about the clubs finances, and why we don't spend out of our ass just because so I won't repeat myself again (check my post history for anyone who's curious).

If this Maguire deal is agreed, then the club has spent £120 million + £25 million in add-ons in this transfer window. So far. Ole has stated that we are looking for "a couple players". Ie. there will be more signing. Bruno Fernandes seems very likely if the noise is any indication, but I honestly don't know. I hope we buy Bruno Fernandes.

The extremely boiled down version of why we are not "easily spending 250 million or more":

1) We do not have Champions League this season. The income loss from this contest is enormous. For once the club is buying pieces that will both get us there next season, and can challenge for the title again in 2-3 seasons. If anyone thinks we're actually doing that this year you need a brutal reality check. Yes I want the club to win every single game, but we have issues that will take time to correct, over several windows.

2) Man United is not financial doped by sheikh money: That means that all the money we spend comes from the clubs own pocket. Not bank loans like Barcelona and Real Madrid, or investment groups taking enormous losses like PSG and Man City. We purchase from our financial strength, and while that strength is better than anyone in football currently, it also means fiscal responsibility.

3) "Hurr durr you need to spend or we're going to lose income and become a mid-table team". Are we though? We've gone the big spending route. It got us: Nothing that we want. The club finally after 6 years since SAF retired have a clear outspoken transfer plan. Young talent, building blocks for a future Man United dynasty. That means we're not going to buy mega-expensive primadonnas or players that want to move on in 3 years (Hi Paul). We're buying players that want a career here. Elite players that want a career here.

4) With the addition of Maguire and Wan-Bissaka we've adressed a HUGE issue since last season, our awful, awful defense. 54 allowed goals in 38 games is 1.4 goals pr game. That's brutally bad for a top4 challenger. Only 2 teams in the top9 allowed more than 50 goals, Man United and Arsenal. Arsenal with 51, us with 54. Ashley Young is a bad bad right back. He's been replaced with the best defensive rightback in the league. We're adding Maguire, an excellent centreback that can play the ball from the back, exactly what Ole wants.

5) Pogba is still here and honestly I think he will stick around with the team, especially given his price tag, and the fact that we're investing in the squad. Lukaku will be replaced. By who I don't know, but the clubs will agree on a transfer and he will be replaced.

6) We have some incredible talent coming up, especially Mason Greenwood who already looks like he is PL ready Angel Gomes *might* make it, I'm undecided on him but my gut says he'll go out on a loan. The point is that we have talent that is ready now. The club is absolutey adding a midfielder once the Maguire saga is over. The squad will be so much stronger this season than last.

That's how I see it. The good thing is that even though the fee is steep, the player is alright.

If true then I do wonder what the conditions are for add-ons.

When we signed Lukaku, I believe we also said among ourselves that he belonged to top 5 strikers in the Premier League. So I'm still skeptical regarding these "top in the league" label. Don't forget Sanchez also got "top 5 attackers in the league" attached to his name.

Sorry but we have been burned so many times that I have refrained myself from being overhyped at transfers... :nervous:

in all honesty, in a market where Tyrone frigging Mings costs up to 26m ... it's not that bad of a deal.

Leicester make out like bandits, but I still think Maguire would be excellent for us. AWB-Lindelof-Maguire-Shaw is a decent back 4 with a lot of upside still.

hopefully, very happy with this. I was a fan of him at Hull, for such a big CB he is impeccable on the ball.

More to the point, in a world where AWB gets signed for an initial 45m it seems entirely reasonable that Maguire would cost an initial 60m.

Let’s not forget John Stones cost £50m 3 years ago and Kyle Walker cost £50m 2 years ago. All before this insane inflation.
