What happened to this guy?

Only 31, think he cost a world record fee for a full back when Real signed him and he looked a good player the first few years there.
He was always pretty shite tbf. Just another weird Mourinho signing.

Lille President Gérard Lopez on Nicolas Pépé: “For him, it is almost done.”

Speaking to La Voix du Nord, Lille President Gérard Lopez discussed the future of Ivorian forward Nicolas Pépé.

“Our work is done. In terms of departures and arrivals: if a player leaves, we will go and get what we need. For Nico, it is almost done and he could have left last summer. it is true that there are big offers and big clubs in for him, so I think… (he will leave). Aside from that, you never know in football.”

This is exactly what I keep saying! We never hear about other clubs CEOs movements, but Ed gets mentioned every other day. The media are preying on our fanbases childish hysteria over every little thing. We're giving them an easy out.
Some on here as well. Bite every time.

Moyes almost signed him for us if you remember. Apparently he was in tears when it fell through.
I remember the tears part yeah but from what i've read it was Woodward who was calling the shots towards the end of that window when we tried to sign him.

Apparently he decided he should step in when dithering Dave spent all summer.. well dithering.

To be honest i didn't watch a lot of him at Real so maybe he was shite most of the time. Only seen him in a few classicos and Champions League Quarter/semi finals.

He was supposed to be the replacement for Marcelo as Mourinho didn't fancy him. That turned out well. :D

This talk of a cheaper alternative to Maguire is annoying the shit out of me. Where the feck are we supposed to find a cheaper alternative about two weeks before the end of the window? Is it supposed to be Alderweireld? Isn't his clause suppose to run out in few days and isn't he supposed to be possibly unsuitable because of his wages and injury history? If not then why the feck are we not after him in the first fecking place.

This is getting dangerously close to another shit window.

At a guess, it's the same situation as Milinkovic-Savic last summer (ie club keen to sell and are trying to make a market for the player by shopping him all over Europe and endlessly briefing about how in demand the he is).

Doesn't look like anyone is actually interested.
This is pretty much it, Lazio wanted what, €150m for him? Proceeded to have a white world cup, now being quoted at €75m.

These clubs have to start realising they cant just set unrealistic numbers on players after a season, my guess is Pepe will leave next summer for €40m to Dortmund.

It's because a majority don't know what they are actually talking about and lack any sort of epistemology to allow them to think for themselves. They just run off whatever narratives tweets and online forums tell them. Just look at this thread, there are people who literally take each tweet or update as gospel and then get completely confused when they contradict each other, going as far as to blame the club or specific people.

You'll see something like 'United bid 70 million for Maguire' and then 'United to bid 80 million for Maguire'. The people putting this out probably have a vague idea of what we're looking at doing in terms of a deal for the player but won't know for sure, hence the contradictions.

However, this immediately turns into something like 'Ed doesn't facking have a clue, doesn't know what he wants to pay and is gunna get bent over again because he knows nothing about football useless cnut!!! We need to hire a football person!!!'

It's depressing, really. So many idiots.

I don't remember David Gill getting as much bad press. I wonder why that could be...geeee...hmmm...man such a tough one....
Helps that Gill was about when social media was very much in it's infancy but that didn't protect Ferguson from being called out for being a dinosaur and needing to go. Or Ronaldo being a one trick pony that needed to be sold.

Don't forget that Gill was in charge when we replaced Ronaldo with Valencia. When we failed to buy a centre midfielder window after window. We made bad signings and had bad windows under Gill. Do you forget how bad things got in the media around 2004/2005? If I could be bothered to look for it, there's a fairly infamous article from the time which lambasted Ferguson for ruining his legacy at United, that he was done and needed to go.

The hatred didn't come out for Gill though because the narrative hadn't been drip fed that he was the fall guy. I don't even know what Woodward specifically does day to day, what judgement calls he makes and I've never spoken to him to gauge what he does or doesn't know. Whilst we have organisational failings that I feel land at his door, I don't agree that he's pretty much at fault for everything except manager conferences and the team sheet. The structure will be more complex than that.

Never see anyone calling Matt Judge out, I wonder why that is? David Gill also had a finance background but you didn't see people constantly saying he isn't a 'football person'. It also helped that both Ferguson and Gill didn't have anywhere like the competition to contend with that we do now. We dominated domestic football because we had the financial clout and very few could compete with us, rarely more than one team at a time.

I could go on but I really don't see the point.

 ay jesucristo, what is this **** and when did it become so large!?

It's a simple comparison for me even when we allow both Gill and Woodward some benefit of the doubt:

I don't recall Gill ever whipping his d*ck out and proclaiming he could best all the other clubs in the transfer market
.

When you say things like THAT, AND THEN go on to have mishaps in the market, you completely deserve every  and meme confronting your incompetence.

Also, you've clearly missed all the outrage on Judge. One of the big United podcasts or YouTube channels covered his embarrassing negotiations in depth. And then there was a torrential downpour of disgust.

I bet you are right. They need a Robben replacement on the right. We dont really need anyone on the right after all..... oh wait...
Yeah, it's typical of the way they operate in the market and drop the bombshell instantly.

Would like this signing to happen although there seem to be a few players that we are linked with which are purported to be nearly done deals. Which seems strange considering the pace the we have been moving at this transfer window.
So I wouldn't take much into the validity of this story, considering the fee as well which I've read is going to be over £70m. But I can hope.

Then how was Woodward able to spend more money than Gill? Was he better at convincing the Glazers to lift restrictions on money?
I think he is good at convincing the Glazer's that he can do enough to get us into the top 4 and they seem to believe him but I don't think he cares much about top 4 any more as long as the club is making money. Hence why we have only made two signings all and the pace he is taking to sign new players, if he ever really has any genuine intention of doing so.
All this "we are working on one signing" bollux could be a charade by Woody to make it seem as if he is doing his hardest to sign players, where he can play the excuse if we don't get them in of we tried our best but sadly we run out of time. I don't like Woody at all.

I'm not a fan of Woody either. I'm just saying that I don't like Gill either and that he was carried by Fergie's brilliance.

I totally agree with that. I think some people may underestimate how much of a good job Sir Alex did here did here. I don't think David Gill would have seemed anywhere near as good at his job if he didn't have Sir Alex who was arguably the greatest manager ever at the helm to steer the ship in the right direction.

The fact is - we have absolutely no idea how good Gill was or wasn't. I always got the impression that him and Ferguson got along, and he is extremely well respected in the business.

But what is that he has done to make you not like him ?
