Spurs would rather let Eriksen leave for free next year than sell him to us now and Eriksen himself would probably have the same preference.

A total non-starter.

If we're sh!T next year and competing for 6th, when people abuse me I'm gonna say it's alright, cos "we're a status club".

Argument won.
No. It's when somebody asks why anyone would join the club with the largest fanbase in the world.
Some self hating Utd fans need reminding of this as well tbh

It might well not be, but we seem to actually be fixing issues in the transfer market at least. I also doubt we'll have a CL final to contend with, which undoubtedly was a big factor in our late league collapse.

Who is to say Ole won't have plenty more issues next season, he's hardly a proven manager. The point is we all have excuses we can turn to in order to explain bad parts of the season.
One signing so far amidst selling your starting right back and attempting to sell another. Spurs performances, not just results, were poor from Christmas at least. They were actually very reminiscent of the kind of football Utd played the year before. It’s not a good sign and it’s more worrying than poor results.

There’s every chance Utd will be shit next season. But Spurs still have work to do to be much better. As things stand there’s not anywhere near as much between Utd and Spurs as some seem to think.

That is very true.
People do forget that.

Usually internet fans who haven't been anywhere near the ground.

Personally, it always hits me immediately when I get near the ground just how huge the set up is. Even hours before kick off.

I have no idea, I'm not nostradamus.

I'd argue that if you're reaching finals you're not that far off (it's one more game) and Liverpool showed that with this season and last. We're certainly a lot closer than plenty of other clubs.

But anyway, at no point have I claimed we're some title winning juggernaut, we're clearly not. We may well win nothing for the next decade. The point is that when it comes to players leaving Spurs, I consider a number of other elite clubs as bigger threats than United currently are. So yes, you're bigger than us .. but no, I don't think many of our players will be aching to jump ship to you, Eriksen included.
You are right that Juventus, Bayern, Barcelona and Madrid are bigger draws right now. However, Spurs, United, Chelsea and Arsenal will all compete for top 4 and are all at a similar level. Spurs should be the best out of the bunch, but for whatever reason, every season you have key moments where the players do not perform. I think because they are of a similar level, its difficult for a player to want to make the switch between the clubs because a player may perceive it as a sideways step. However, having said that, a player will also note that Arsenal, Chelsea and United have all won trophies in the last 5 years or so and spurs have not. You have had close calls to winning trophies, but that is simply a poor argument. You either win the thing or you don't.

Because the reality of football is that the 'big club' brag doesn't mean half as much as you think it does. Manchester City are nowhere near as attractive as you but 90% of players will choose them over you because a combination of money and potential for success, the two factors which matter most to players. You offer money but very little potential for top titles, so players with big ambitions in the short term are not likely to choose you. On a pedestal? Yeah a pedestal to get fecking abused like Pogba does when the rest of the team is inept so the stars get blamed.

It's not a 'tribal stance', I know United are a far bigger club, but right now you're far from one of the most attractive elite clubs around, so sorry .. I'm not remotely worried about you poaching our players. Eriksen will be able to go to any elite club he wants on a free, why would he go a season earlier to a club outside of Europe who don't have a big name manager and have bounced in and out the top 4 for years? It makes no sense as a career choice.

As for your analogy .. it's more like choosing a girlfriend who isn't as good looking and isn't as stable a person, but hey she's got status and money so you're set in that regard.
You're arguing against the obvious because its the obvious answer that you don't like to hear...for whatever reason.
If Eriksen where to leave for United it will be because we dwarf you as a club. Not because of the quality of the sides etc bit because he wants to join the global institution that are called Manchester United while Spurs are playing second fiddle to random teams from a different sport in their very own stadium.
im not saying he will join or if he even thinks that way but thats the reason he will have joined us in this unlikely scenario.

Trippier was fecking dogshit last season and even if it means Foyth at RB I'm glad he's gone. We've brought in a top class CM (midfield was our biggest issue) and very clearly are looking at other signings, including Lo Celso.

Also, the fact we played excellent football in the CL makes me far less worried about the late league form, as it leads me to believe the issue was complacency in the league.

What obvious answer? That United are a much bigger club? Obviously. But that isn't as big a draw to most players as you'd think .. so many top players have been happy to play for tinpot clubs if they offer other things, stars at Monaco were happy playing in that terrible stadium with barely any fans, because they offered lots of money and potential European football. Obviously United are a huge draw (nobody is denying this) but I'm far less worried about the 'global institution that are called Manchester United' than I am by other elite clubs who also offer a chance at CL glory.

Also way to go trying to twist us playing in arguably the most impressive stadium in the country now, in to a negative. Bravo.

You may or may not be right but it raises an interesting point. Levy is touted as a very good CEO, but would a good CEO be willing to let a contract run down and potentially lose a handsome fee? Woodward has been receiving all kids of abuse for the same thing happening with Herrera..

He was and was still better than your alternatives. Well top class will need to be proven first. How often have you watched him? Every team is looking at other signings. We’re all running out of time to actually get them though.

Not sure I watched the same games as you then. Spurs were wretched for at least two halves of each game against Ajax and weren’t much better in the final.

I'm not claiming we're a bigger draw than you (we're not to a majority of players, to some younger ones of a certain profile yes, but certainly not most) I'm saying I don't think you're so much of a draw right now that you can simply poach our players. I think the likes of Kane, Eriksen, Son etc when they leave can pick pretty much the cream of the crop .. you're not in that tier right now.

Far more concerned by other teams who offer the entire package, Eriksen has his pick of that bunch.

Was he? I honestly wanted Aurier in for some games last season he was so shit. And it still remains to be seen whether we replace him anyway.

He's extremely highly rated and what I have seen of him, I've been very impressed. He'll certainly be a significant upgrade over a crocked Wanyama or Eric Dier.

We won the games against Ajax though .. a team who smashed Madrid and embarrassed Juventus. Who cares if we were bad for a couple of halves, we were also very, very good for two of them - whilst missing a number of key players. We were also mostly excellent against City and brilliant against Dortmund in a 4-0 aggregate win. Those aren't the results of a team who are losing their way.

We weren't at our best at all in the final, but it was a pretty even affair against one of the two teams who absolutely dominated English football this season.

Does he really though? Real Madrid have been throwing money about like it’s going out of fashion and haven’t made a move. So have Barcelona. Maybe they don’t want him that much.

If he moves on a free, yes. I think the reason Europe's elite haven't come in for him is because they're reluctant to pay big money for a player who they can pick up for nothing.

If he's out of contract, pretty much all of Europe's biggest clubs will want in on that. Maybe they won't want him that much, but they'll still be interested if he's free. And all Eriksen has to do for that is wait another season.

Looking over my shoulder.
I won’t deny much of that, the problem is, keep going the way you currently are and that status fades. I’ve never been disrespectful of United on here, unlike some United fans of Spurs but hey to be expected. The facts are would any player pick Untied over City right now, honestly? Would some possibly turn Liverpool down in order to sign for United? I very much doubt it, City are expanding on the legacy they have been building over the last decade, and honestly will continue to as long as Pep is there. Even Liverpool are pulling on, a smiley face at the end of a patronising post won’t change that. I will state again United are the biggest club in the land, it doesn’t mean it always will be.
This is true. You can't live on history. That's what Liverpool tried to do and United must prevent themselves from doing. The football needs to be entertaining, and the club needs to get back that aura is has long been missing. I actually think Solskjær might be the answer to those two things, but then comes a time, and it comes quickly, where we need to be winning things again. Hopefully whilst Pep is still manager, otherwise the detractors will use that as an excuse to downplay a title.

BTW, I think you and many other posters supporting other clubs are more sensible than many United supporters here!

You have made that bolded comment a couple of times now and its bullshit and you know it. The Europa League not the Champions League maybe but it is still in Europe and most fans of your club would give their left nut to win it so by all means point out that you are in the premier European competition but don't resort to lies to support your bragging.

Your manager seemed to think so given he started more games than the alternatives.

What have you seen of him though?

You said the performances were excellent though. Is that not what we were talking about? You need to make up your mind because I remember you crying endlessly about Spurs performances last season. When it comes to an argument your opinion seems to change with the wind. I’d say your week by week results and performances are a sign of that. Whether they make the signings to stop that is a different matter.

Aurier was injured. Otherwise I'm pretty sure he would have gotten a shot, what with Trippier turning in disastrous performance after disastrous performance.

Couple of France games and a few Lyon ones, as well as the obvious highlight packages. Players don't get in this stacked French team without having talent. Maybe he will end up being shit, but I doubt the club have spunked 60m+ on someone who is going to be a worse option than what we have.

We were dreadful at the end of the season in the league, yes. Our performances (overall) in Europe were very good and easily above the level of a mere top 4 club, hence why we got to a final. What about my opinion has changed? I've always said we have a very good starting XI but a poor midfield/depth, and been very consistent on that.

Right ok. You'll be in the BTEC European competition.

You happy now?

edit: It also wasn't a lie, I just forgot that sixth gets EL.

The situations seem rather different, but even if they were identical, that's really a matter for the Spurs fans.

I'd say that letting a star player leave to join a top four rival would be bad for business, regardless of his contract situation. A good CEO would either hold on to Eriksen or sell him abroad.

I agree - in your position I’d take less money and sell abroad. That being said, I hope we buy him :D

Won’t happen though..

Yep, entirely deserved. We've been terrible and Burnley have been far the more likely in the last 10 minutes.

Joke of a performance.
Woeful. To put in that performance after Burnley last week is an utter disgrace, there's a few players in this team who need to be replaced, and decent money needs to be spent on quality replacements if we have any ambition whatsoever.
Awful. I don't care about Arsenal but our performance has been a fecking disgrace and devoid of any quality whatsoever in the second half.

Shockingly shite.
We've undoubtedly been poor, but that is nothing new right now, this is just poor with some added cowardice.
Yes, on the face of it we're doing well, but you're not telling me that you look at our current performances and are confident of staying third? We look tired, out of ideas and to me it's looking pretty clear that the squad situation has gone stale.

There’s just a few of you complaining about the standard of Spurs play. I can’t be bothered digging out more. Maybe Spurs were distracted by the Champions League in February.

Shock horror as fan after losses during match day wasn't happy. What is that meant to prove, exactly?

We weren't top class all of last season, but for the majority of it we were comfortably third.

You were indeed. Blip at the end like most of the contenders, but I still see you as likely 3rd placed team this year. CL final can’t be argued with either.

We really struggled at times with the squad being down to the bare bones, we really couldn't afford to have many key injuries but we got them and then some. Eriksen was off form most of the season and with Kane/Alli injured we were heavily reliant on Son who was clearly running on almost nothing by the end of the season, don't forget he had an international tournament in the middle of the season too.

Added depth of NDombele, Lo Celso and Sessegnon will help a lot in these regards.

It proves I'm a little bitch during/after match days. Always have been. I was ripping in to the team at HT during the second leg of the Ajax game as well.

What about my opinion has changed? I've never argued we're anything other than a top 4 club, which I've been annoyed about because I think we have/had potential to do more. That's always been the source of any frustration.

No, I spent the summer arguing with Glaston that we didn't do enough in the window to combat our midfield/depth issues .. which I still maintain. I never said we were shite, my prediction was we would face a battle for top four.

We're clearly far from the perfect team and have issues of our own (Ndombele + Lo Celso would basically fix the main one) but yeah, I do think we're a better team than the current United side. But that's not saying all that much.

And our play was shit at times. It's amazing how you can be better than some teams but still not super duper amazing.

And also, I never argued with balaks about shit performances (IIRC he agreed with my complaints about a lot of our poor periods) but during the summer due to transfer negativity. And the vast majority of my arguments with Glaston were for the same reasons, lack of summer investment.

But anyway .. yes I vocally complain during shit match days, I'm a drama queen in those situations. Why would that mean I don't think we're better than United?

Of course bad performances weren't a concern .. I'm honestly so confused as to what you're even arguing? Fan complains when team plays badly shocker?

We had bad games last season, plenty of them, hence why we were so far behind the top two. I never claimed in this thread we were the finished product or didn't have issues, just that we were currently a better team than United.

We had a shocking end to the season, and yeah it's worrying. The league clearly went to shit after we were knocked out of that so called three way title race. But the team showed up in the CL and that shows me that the ability is there in the squad, just potentially the mentality wasn't right in the league and we became complacent about the top four fight.

Ugh, it’s like banging your head against a wall. You’re sitting pretending all is rosy in the garden because of ‘excellent’ performances in the Champions League despite complaining all season long Spurs were playing shit. But of course thats not an issue anymore when it comes to a good argument with somebody. You definitely didn’t post this in October.

Very glad to hear him admit this, and pretty much confirms what a lot of fans have been thinking .. the results in the league have been good, but deceptive. Performances have been the poorest I can remember for a while and we need to step it up.

There isn't the same energy about the team. I'm worried about tonight.
Spurs were playing shit long before the end of the season. If you now want to pretend otherwise knock yourself out.

I really don’t see Eriksen moving to United, or any other PL club for that matter. United have no European football and are far too much of a wildcard with Ole in charge, City don’t need him, we could definately use him but probably not enough to spend £70m (even if he’s my fantasy signing) and Arse and Chelsea would be a sideways/backwards move.

If I were a betting man, I’d say he runs down his contract and goes abroad next summer.

Actually United are favourites to win a European title this season. Of course not a meaningful one, but at the very least it should classify as "European football".
