Unacceptable or Weird Chants

I remember park doing an interview, think with the United magazine, about his parents flying over for a match. They didn’t speak English so he had to explain to them what the chant was about after the match. If I recall correctly, he liked it. In my humble opinion the Lukaku one was worse.

Worst thing about that Maguire chant for me is it’s shite.

Surprised the shinji chant hasn’t been mentioned yet

I agree - not sure what the problem is TBH, there actually is a relatively high consumption of dog meat in Korea
Some people may deem the next part of the chant (in bold below) as offensive, because it seems to suggest the consumption of dogs is a bad thing. I personally don't think its offensive. In UK culture, dogs are pets and are well loved, so for many in the UK, the idea of eating them, is odd and some would find it disgusting. I am sure there are some parts of the UK culture that the Koreans (or other cultures for that matter) find odd or disgusting - eating fried mars bars may be an example.

Park, Park, wherever you may be,
You eat dogs in your country,
It could be worse,

Are you comparing my beautiful little doggy to a deep fried Mars Bar?

I doubt that is it - its more likely the usually overly PC types who just think singing about Koreans eating dogs is offensive, eventhough its just fact that many Koreans do (although I understand that even there its rapidly failling in popularity)

A new example.

Maguire one isn't so bad but I'm not sure how we got away with Park Ji Sung's chant for so many years, it's probably one of the most unacceptable chants there is but it was overlooked during his whole United career. The Lukaku Belgian penis one was just weird but thankfully didn't last.

Do you think there should be someone sanctioning these types of stuff? When they are good they can be really good like the Ole chant, Falcao chant, Zlatan chant, Herrera chant etc.

That looks so out of tune.

Maguire has a huge feck off head,
Wish we'd signed someone else instead.

But we shouldn't be slabhead-shamers,
Because as a club we are inclusive diversity celebrators.

But he also benefits from systemic white cis het male privilege
So feck off Maguire you twat.

I don’t see the point in chanting if it doesn’t offend someone.

Preferably it offends a group of opposing fans, however, not an individual.

Makes me think of The Vandals.

If my body was twice the size it was
Then I might look all right
But I don't because
I've got a disproportioned head

And the people, they point and laugh at me
And they tell me it's huge
Cuz honestly
I've got a disproportioned head

Don't try and be nice
And say it's really not that big
Cuz I am well aware that you are lying
About my head

And it blocks out the sun like a parasol
And I'm walking around like a toddler doll
Cuz I've got a disproportioned head

And I can't make it better with surgery
So I'm stuck with a skull that the world can see
I've got a disproportioned head

Don't try to be nice to me
Because you think I am near
I'm across the street
And I can hear you

Don't offer advice to me
Of hats, it's all been tried
They don't really make them
In my size

I could only fit in covertible cars
And my mom has a three-foot Cessarian scar
Cuz of my disproportioned head

And I'd go ahead and end it now
But I can't find a noose that would fit around
My huge disproportioned head

I've got a disproportioned head

The Park chant really isn't that bad, dog meat is consumed in large numbers in South Korea so it's more of a factual statement than it is offensive. Pretty much equivalent to singing "you eat pigs in your home country" to an Englishman.

the bit that stereotypes a nation of people, probably
It's not a stereotype. It's a fact.

"Chicha, chicha, wherever you may be, you eat tacos in your country" -- literally no difference.

so you're saying Ji-Sung Park eats dog in Korea?
If you're going to be pedantic about the precise wording. But no one else is.

The chant clearly means "dogs are eaten in your country", not "park himself eats dogs back home".

Totally disingenuous to claim it's just there as a random fact about Korea - it's clearly supposed to be pejorative else the next line wouldn't be "it could be worse". You only say "it could be worse" about things that are bad. It's completely obvious that the implication is that it is eating dogs is barbaric, though not quite as bad as eating rats.

The whole song is fecking pathetic and beneath us as a club. Hard to believe that a song about "eating rats in your council house" could catch on with anyone older than primary school age. Never joined in with it, never will.

I wasn't trying to be pedantic. I don't believe the chant refers to him specifically which is why I called it a stereotype.

For what its worth I don't think its that bad (though I'd rather we didn't sing it) but I was just pointing out what people might find offensive about it - ie they don't like to be stereotyped especially to a (perceived) negative behaviour.

The majority of Koreas now don't eat dog meat. Its frowned upon by large parts of society particularly the younger generations, and people are trying to outlaw it.

You can't equivocate it with Mexicans eating tacos for obvious reasons.

There are usually some Hysel or Hillsborough related chants that I refuse to join in with when we play Liverpool - that for me is where things cross the line
This. Any that reference a tragedy are unacceptable.

Agree, I am not easily offended and find most of the chants funny. I know of none league clubs who have tried to stop swearing and I’m thinking how am I gonna teach my kids how to swear? But references to Hillsborough and the like are out of order, especially as there will be people who lost family in the same crowd

Years back there was an excellent thread on the Caf about "politically correct football chants".

I couldn't be arsed looking for it? But I recall it being funny stuff

(Although a part of me wonders if it didnt age well)

:lol::lol: that "not quite as bad as eating rats"
It's obviously what the chant means. Can you think of a single use of the phrase "it could be worse..." that isn't about two bad things, where the second is even worse than the first? It is unavoidably what the phrase means FFS. Whether or not you think it's OK in this case is a different matter there isn't really any other way of understanding those words.

"There's only 2 Andy Gorams" has to be the wittiest chant of all time.
Undeniably something witty about that one, though still not great in my opinion. In any case, loath as I am to admit it, Liverpool's "Blame it on Traore" is wittier. Not that I've ever heard that one in the wild, mind you, maybe it's apocryphal.
