Pleased for greenwood hopefully first of many. Gomes was good and warrants a game time in pl. He also needs to take few shots himself, seemed to keep passing today. Fred was involved a lot spreading balls all over the pitch. Chong was quite poor today.

The performance was poor but that was kinda expected given the amount of changes, obviously the goal from Greenwood was the only real highlight but Gomes had some good moments, the 2 senior CM's were really poor though and I thought Rashford looked as naive as any of the kids. Still, 3 points and our newest wonderkid got off the mark, so boring but with the moment we wre hoping for.

My wit's end
We've perfected the art of bunching together where we should be spaced apart, and spacing apart where we should be bunched together. It makes United's game harder than it needs to be.

I always rewatch our matches, and I'm in the middle of the first half again at the moment. It's so obvious when you see multiple runners make forward runs into the same channels between defenders, whilst almost nobody offers passing options between the lines. Lingard is the only attacker at the club who can be relied upon to make the right decisions in those circumstance, although he's obviously lacking in other qualities.

That being said, there's no reason why the rest of them can't learn how to make the right runs. It's a problem with the attacking coaches at the club. They need to be replaced before we start looking at Ole and the players (not that they're immune from criticism, mind you).

Mason scoring the winner at the Stretty was pretty much the perfect end game result..

However, practically it was a pretty poor performance against a made up PES European fodder team, at home, where we created next to no clear chances in the 2nd half and needed a 17 year old to bail us out...

There’s undoubted value in patience, transition, etc... but also valid concern in the continuing lack of any discernible style or identity
2008, League cup round 1. United with arguably their best ever team, lose 2-0 to a championship side... You don't get style and identity with a group of youngsters and reserves then.

That'd be a good argument, if this kind of performance was a notable anomaly, and not increasingly the acceptable norm.

Positives, the line up was great and exciting. So happy to see the kids being given chances. Gomes was good, look neat on the ball. He needs minutes to grow his confidence. I thought greenwood was average playing on wing, he needs to be in the centre and be the fox in box. Chong was not good, but the experience is valuable. Fred was very very good, he needs minutes and hopefully he, pogba and Mctominay become the mid three. Rojo also surprised me, aggressive forward thinking, loved it.

Negatives was rashford. Tries too hard and is too greedy. He is not striker, he needs to be on the left or right wing. Cannot wait for Martial to be back.

It wasn't a great performance by any stretch of the imagination, but happy the kids got a run out. Gomes looked pretty sharp in the 10 role, and Tuanzebe looked comfortable.

Must have mistaken where we play kids every week in key positions...
The same kids half of our fans think should be playing PL games every week, and whom we had so much faith we sold half our attacking players in the name of giving them opportunities... and who just struggled unimpressively to beat a side 3rd in the Kazakhstani league, at home!...

Look, I was as excited as anyone by the line up tonight, and I dearly hoped to see us run riot and prove the ingenious secret brilliance of our outwardly terrible summer squad management. But alas, it was a pretty uninspiring event, truth be told...

And a manager with a proper plan, or progressive footballing outlook, would've introduced those players into a well established playing system where we could create chances regardless, and wouldn't have to rely entirely on them producing singular moments of genius to win us games against teams who look like they ordered their kits off the internet!

I haven't expected a great performance because (The main reason will always be Solskjaer) it was a totally new team.....to see so many young players was very good and we have won therefore it was a positive match.

I've seen enough from Tuanzebe to know he deserves a chance to build a partnership with Maguire.

Think the team we saw today has a lot to do with the next two games coming so quickly, players coming back from injury and the depth of the squad.

Some of the criticism in here is baffling...

1. Completely reshuffled team with with only, god help me, Jones, Rojo and Matic as senior players and we don't win 6-0, yeah that's expected

2. Apparently our movement was poor, against a low block team, when Rashford still got 3 great chances from his runs and they kept fouling our number 10 constantly because of his dribbling, first touch turn and, yep, movement... get a grip

3. We apparently put in a boring performance, in a dead rubber game against a team who didn't/can't play (not even sure where Astana are from, Romania?) with our B-team plus 3 competitive starts/debuts for youth players, including a 17 year old scoring the winner. Obviously it's not the Champions League final but, honestly, if that bores you, switch to La Liga and watch Barca hammer Atletico Mierda 30 times a season.

Really think some people on here would have got more enjoyment out of watching Coronation Street instead last night.

The idiotic half. These kids are still kids. Its not like Beckham and Co coming into the side at ages 20-22. They should be introduced incrementally and not all at the same time. We also didn't sell half of our attacking players because of these three, we sold them because they either offered us nothing moving forward, or failed to demonstrate a capacity to play in style that actually complimented our effective assets.

Uninspiring because they failed to play well, or uninspiring because they failed to live up to the hype in your head you created for them?

Irrespective of however you look at tonight, it was a team entirely made up of misfits, incredibly young players and a seriously out of form striker who wasted numerous chances. When your entire attacking third is made up of an average age of 19, three of whom are 17/18, its going to end in frustration.

Did Lukaku not show he could play under Ole? I don't know what fantasy people have in their head about what type of football Ole is playing.

Nothing to write home about... disappointed with the young lads.
So typical to see a post like this.

Ole through all of them in together in a pretty much second /third string team against a team that parked the bus. Had we scored early it probably would have been a comfortable win, but given we didn't, it was a proper task breaking them down. I'm not sure why people think the youngsters are going to come in and blow everyone away. They're not exactly walking into a team that's dominating every match.

I thought Gomes looked very good. He's definitely ready for the PL. Some of his touches are sublime. Greenwood found it hard to get into the game but his goal was brilliant. Lovely dummy and the shot had more power behind it than you'd expect from that angle. Chong was the only one who struggled really.

Fred and Matic played well. The CBs were solid especially Tuanzebe who bossed things.

The football under Ole requires a forward who is good with the ball at his feet, knows how to keep the ball under pressure and pass. Which both don't exist in Lukaku, with that kind of first touch it's impossible to play in such role.

You're so obsessed with Lukaku
Well someone genuinely answer the question. He scored playing for Ole so where is this idea that he cannot play for Ole coming from? We have sold a striker and not added anyone to the forward line and this is always the reasoning and it's bollocks.

Happy to see Fred is getting game time, I think he should start alongside McTomminay against West Ham.

Both Axel & Greenwood were the highlights today imo, positive display from them & looks matured & ready. Gomes did well but still not fully ready yet.

Falcao also scored for United so that logic is a bit strange.

It's more about how you appear to scan the caf looking for things connected to Lukaku to respond to.

Lukaku did more than Falcao, you know that comparison is bollocks. I post replies for many things, not just things about Lukaku.

Don't be so sensitive. I was criticising that sentence which didn't add up. He was better than Falcao but eventually not good enough, a poor fit and wanted to go as well.

I wasn't being sensitive?

I don't see how he wasn't good enough under Ole. That's my point. The two goals against PSG. The two goals against Southampton. The two assists against Arsenal. That's just 3 examples where he was a big winning factor under Ole.

I think the downside of playing the kids at OT is that you know the opposition will bank-up like in this case, two banks of fives. Maybe now that they have this under their belt (or nerves out of the way), it might be easier for them to play in away matches when home teams cant bank up like this.

If he was so good, Ole would have kept him. He clearly felt he wasn't really good enough despite those goals. Rashford had a good goalscoring spell last season, as did Martial (under Jose). That doesn't mean they're automatically brilliant and untouchable. It means they've contributed. And you need to do more than just contribute (unless you're Phil Jones) to have a successful career at a big club. You have to have all round quality peformances, you have to fit the system and philosophy of the club. I have nothing against Lukaku, and wish him well at Inter. But like Mourinho he was a misfit and didn't do enough at United. I'm happy with our decision to go for youth for the time being.

Considering the hype around these kids I was expecting more from them rather then scrap a 1-0 goal against Astana. Don’t take me wrong there's some potential in them. However there is nothing to justify the fact that we started the season with basically no midfield or forward line. We should have replaced Lukaku, Herrera and fellaini +added a RW

Definitely. Bolstering RW and central midfield could have been done alongwith bedding in the youth. Hopefully we're waiting on Sancho for the former. But regardless there's nothing we can do but hope we see improvment in the collective and development of all these young players over the season (youth product and otherwise).

Didn't watch the match, but glad that Greenwood got a goal. Other than that, we got the three points and the kids got some experience which is important

Eventually we'll have to improve our creativity ad a football team. And that won't come from the kids IMO. I'm hoping to see the likes of Gomes and Greenwood improve despite the lack of creativity. Where that improvement will come from is A) improvement in midfield B) additons to the attack (key additions in both areas) and a general improvement in the team (Shaw and AWB offering more attacking threat, Pogba used well, better ball retention, better possession etc)

To facilitate Lukaku we had to play a specific brand of football that was detrimental to the rest of the team. He scored something like 5 or 6 goals for Ole in over half a season. That is not a decent return on investment and considering he has a tendency to disappear against big clubs, why would you build a team around him?

Nobody is running around saying we're playing a great football, but what do you expect when you're limited to what's put in front of you? Ole and the club made a decision to strip the club to the bare bones in order to properly rebuild. No different to what Sir Alex did when he took over or any competent manager that understands that just buying players doesn't necessarily solve the issues.

We are doing no better without him so this point makes no sense.

I don't think he sold him because he wasn't good enough. He just doesn't want to play with that kind of forward.
