A little story about my wife: Before she used to anti Ronaldo so so hard. Like how you often see Ronaldo antifans in social media always says: tapinaldo, penaldo, small games player blabla... She is exactly that in real life. She hates Ronaldo so much, also she hates his arrogant personality. I on the other side am very neutral about Messi and Ronaldo, I convinced her to watch all the Real Madrid games in Champions League with me during the Zidane era. I still vividly remember her dying a little bit inside everytime she saw Ronaldo scores a goal and try to find excuses to deny his greatness. I can tell she gradually started to feel guilty/ashamed if she goes against herself and admit Ronaldo is great so she remained stubborn and disapprove of Ronaldo as long as she can. But surely after the 3 CL winnings, the Euro 2016, balloon dior winner, I think she must have enough. One day, out of the blue, she suddenly confess to me: she has been following Ronaldo Instagram for a while and she admit she started to become a big fan of Ronaldo.

Hahaha you guys can't imagine, this is the biggest switch or change of opinion that I have ever encountered during my 30 years in life.

He's gunning for the international record.

He's never gonna get to 1000 or whatever Pele's claimed record is. He might set a record for games that don't include pathetic friendlies or whatever to the total though.

1000 in the Brazilian league is nowhere near the same as 700 in Europe.

762 is the official international goals record held by Bican according to record newspaper. Ronaldo is now on 700.

Aha I was just adding to it. I wasn't going "against you"
I’ve never really joined or argued the messi v Ronaldo camp but Ronaldo is the greatest player I’ve ever seen and I was amazed at messi.

This guy dominated every league he’s ever seen, won stuff at international level and is still going, I think messi is declining.

Paratici just said that Cristiano is going to stay at Juve until 2021 at least, so no new pastures or retirement next Summer.
He'll set all sorts of unbeatable records by participating in the next WC so retirement is off the table.

700 goals in 16 or 17 years, that’s an average over 40 goals a year. When considering first few years he is playing as traditional winger in 442, while majority of his career he was playing as wing forward, it’s an amazing feat.

When Pele was scoring these 1,000 goals, Brazil won 3 out of 4 world cups, so wouldn't that mean the best players in the world played in Brazil at the time? His career statistics are even better against European sides than (over a goal a game) his overall stats. The 'friendly' matches that he played for Santos against European sides were in effect competitive games, they just were not sanctioned as being official that's why they are termed friendlies which gives the wrong impression. You always have to look at the context of the time Pele played when the majority of South American players played in their domestic leagues and they held their own against European sides. It's nothing like today when all the top players are in European leagues.

It's a bit like saying if somebody from the past could time travel and looked at who won the league last season and saw it was man city, they would think that league can't be up to much if man city have won it. People need to take their modern blinkers off and look at things as they were at the time .

Ronaldo won't be appreciated until he retires and he is gone from the footballing fields.

The way people talk about him really puts him at a level where you would assume that his type of career was easy to follow.

The moment he retires & when all you have is goal scoring records, trophies, national team achievements, individual records and a CV that encapsulates playing in the toughest league - people will appreciate Ronaldo for what he is.

For me the lad is not simply what a footballer should be - that can go to Messi - but Ronaldo for me is what a human should be. Simple. If aliens one day came to this earth to understand what a Human has the potential to be - I'd show them Cristiano Ronaldo.

Every human in the world should aim to be Ronaldo - that ego, that personality, that effort, that perfection, that competition, that ability to always take the hard routes of life and to come out with achievements.

My son's and my daughters — no matter what you want to be, be the C. Ronaldo of your role and careerl. Aim for the stats and the stars with your ego and look down at everyone else on the earth beneath you.

An absolute legend of a man, not just a footballer.

Imagine scoring 30 goals a season for 20 years, you'd retire with 600 goals to your name.

Cristiano Ronaldo has 700.

Fecking scary. Only when he retires will we truly appreciate the level he and Messi have been playing it because it probably won’t be matched again.

I agree they are under appreciated and there wont be anyone near there level for a long time.

Want to know what's even scarier? He is "only" 34 and its very possible he scores 30 goals a season the next 2 seasons. Then if he goes to MLS like Ibra did he can easily bang in another 30 until he's 38. So their is a real chance he retires with 780 something or maybe even 800 goals.

Unbelievable feat if it were to happen.

Ronaldo (and Messi) could retire RIGHT NOW and their careers and names would be in the conversation with the all time greats which they are. Yet they are still playing probably for another 5 Years.....un freaking believable.

Imagine if he had started scoring earlier at United, he could have had an outside shot at 1,000

I have no doubt he could have. It’s crazy to think about it but I truly believe he can hit 800 which would be the all time official goals record. He has 5 season to hit 100 goals thus assuming that he will retire at 38 and if he sees bican in striking distance of him I have no doubt he will refuse to retire (if his body allows it) until he breaks that record.

They're both phenomenal but we have to also consider the influence of the mega clubs, managers and sports science as well. Maradona, Ronaldo etc weren't lucky enough to play under absolute elite clubs throughout their careers. Messi has been at an incredible Barcelona throughout managed by Pep etc. Ronaldo has been Madrid United and Juve managed by SAf, Jose etc. And the super club culture hogging the best talent has helped without a doubt as has sports science and improvement in fitness and overall professionalism. Not staying they're brilliant ,but while looking at the stats this has to be considered. I'm sure the past greats would also put up incredible numbers in this era the ones who are greater than them or lesser than them (depending on your view of these two and those greats).

Good point but it works both ways, I’d say the overall level of the game is much higher now than it was in the 90’s so whilst Ronaldo might be getting the very best coaching etc so are his opponents.

I mean Ronaldo scored most of his goals and won most of his trophies playing against arguably the greatest club side ever in Pep’s Barcelona.

I think you made a fair point, but regardless, the mental resilience both of them showed over the years is phenomenal. Of all the players in the GOAT discussion, I think only Pepe and Di Stefano had the same drive throughout their career. Maradona would most likely still be a cokehead, and Fat Ronaldo even without the injuries still loved to party, George Best with his drinking, so on and so forth.

Have a discussion with my mate today, he is thinking Ronaldo may considered retirement in 2 or 3 years time, mostly because having the ego he has, he won't be able to stand himself scoring less and less goals as he aged. Imagine in 2 or 3 years time he will be 36-37, if he could only manage to score less than 20 goals a season, he totally won't be able to accept it, and he will go for retirement instead.
But so far, in last couple of months, he has scored 11 goals in 12 games. Showing no sign of slowing down yet.

I have been watching Ronaldo closely recently. I am astounded by how his football is actually improving while seemingly not declining physically. He looks fitter, as quick as ever and his football is more rounded. His passes are amazing, his shooting (with both feet) are still so fierce. I suspect Ronaldo will still be at the top of world football for at least five more seasons. PSG or Bayern will be good teams for him to win more trophies (more easily) and bang in more goals.

I think as long as he sees a record in sight he will continue. If that record is Bicans record he will want it because then he will hold records that wont be broken for 70+ years if not more. His goal scoring record for Portugal will never be touched, his International goals record will take a LONG time to be touched (assuming he breaks daeli record) If he ends up staying top scorer in CL history that as well will probably not be broken for 50+ years and his Madrid all times goal record will take YEARS to be touched, So assuming IF he wore to break Bicans record or if he was 38 and only needed 15 more goals I dont see him retiring until he wore to break the record (if his body allows) because with his ego as you said to be able to etch his name in football (which he already has) and have the all time officials goal record we are talking about something that wont be broken for centuries and he would no doubt want that.

This is of course if he can bang in 30 goals this season and the next then he will most likely break it and hold every major goal scoring record in history.

C Ronaldo doesn't need to retire early - he can go to sporting Lisbon on his last breath and capture a last few goals for the club he started doing the same thing.
