I'm trying to get into this and failing as people said how creepy it is. I nearly fell asleep during the first episode. I DID fall asleep during the 2nd. I think it's quite darkly lit, slow moving and I'm struggling to make out what they're saying. It's one of those I feel I should try and watch as everyones raving about it but I'm struggling to get the enthusiasm to. I'm not desperately waiting for the next episode to come out like I was with line of duty/ body guard. I also binge watched The Confession recently as I just had to see what happens in the next episode. Apparently it's based on a book so I may give the book a go when I'm trying to find something to read. This is probably way premature but the currently showing Dublin Murders is rapidly falling into this category for me. I've enjoyed Sarah Phelps' Agatha Christie adaptations in recent years so went into this with high hopes that it would retain the quality but maybe be a little grittier and lose some of the kitsch factor synonymous with the source material. Nope. Just nope. It is personality deficient, dull, a smorgasbord of tropes and clichés wrapped up in a charmless, inane package. None of the characters interest me in the slightest. I couldn't care less about the backstory or the present mystery. It's actually proving a chore to watch, which is so rare for me with murder mystery shows. Even the shite ones tend to at least hold my interest somewhat.
Maybe I haven't been concentrating enough... though there's been little to inspire my attention. Maybe I haven't given it enough time; checking out about halfway through episode 3. Or maybe it's just terrible. Curious for the opinions of others here?
Maaaybe..Is that coincidentally the last season where the dragon lady were topless?
Damien Lewis shoulda gone at the end of S1, if he pulled that trigger it woulda taken the show to a whole other level.Homeland took a massive nosedive after S1.
There's only so much you can do with mad CIA operative doing mad things. And once Damien Lewis went it was the final nail in the coffin. Shame as it promised so much, but ended up utter shit.
Oh, and 98% of the Fast and Furious movies and all associated franchises, and all the comic book movies that they've flooded our cinema screens with over the past five years.
Homeland Season 1 is one of the finest seasons of Television I can remember... it should just have been a standalone.Homeland took a massive nosedive after S1.
Don't do it to yourself...Dexter after season 4.
Actually, scratch that. Don't even finish the last episode of season 4. At the end of season 4s last episode, turn it off as soon as Dexter's phone rings. That's the end. Don't you dare let him answer that damn phone!
Personally, I still found Dexter enjoyable after said season (mainly due to Dexter himself), but the quality drastically decreases after the fourth season.
I actually have a few episodes left of the final season to go that I've been meaning to watch for like over a year now. I'll get round to those last few episodes some day....
Don't bother. Worst ending ever. Changing writers killed that show. It was brilliant for the first 3 seasons.
If I remember correctly, I was warned not to continue the series numerous times in the Dexter thread alreadyDon't do it to yourself...
Fair enough. I appreciate the film predominately takes Tony Lip's viewpoint, in no small part because his son Nick drove the project and co-wrote the screenplay, and that that opened the door to 'white saviour' and 'magical negro' criticism. I maintain, and it's not lost on me that it's my privilege to do so from my perspective as a white 30 year old from the UK, that both characters learn and are changed for the better because of the time they spend with each other, it is not the case that one 'saves' the other nor that the black character exists only for the betterment of the white character, and that scenes such as the one below belie the idea that it is somehow only Tony's viewpoint on racism that counts:Yeah, the performances were pretty good based on the material they had to work with. I get the whole "They learn from each other" angle but in that case the fatal flaw of the film is that it's only ever viewed from one man's perspective (Viggo's), and when you're dealing with the topic of racism in the deep south in the 50s it's probably not the best decision to have that one perspective be the white guy. Makes the film look really ignorant, which it was.
You were warned. If I remember correctly, I was warned not to continue the series numerous times in the Dexter thread already
I can't help myself! I'm too deep. Plus, despite the show itself being subpar, I'm admittedly still invested in Dexter himself. Michael C. Hall is a wonderful actor.
Hank is pretty likeable, as is Walt for the majority of it. Jesse starts off a dick and gradually becomes a better person put in bad situations. Saul is likable. Mike too. Even Gus.Breaking Bad is tumescent.
No characters are likeable and it's so slow and dull.
Part of me wanted to get back into it and finally finish it once the film came out but I really cba.
I'm sure it's unfair to lump them all in together but nothing I've seen from the likes of those, Brooklyn 99 and Chuck Lorre's stuff does anything for me. The only American sitcom that I like is Curb Your Enthusiam. It's Always Sunny and How I Met Your Mother. I don't appreciate shit american sitcoms. Big Bang Theory as well, even if I used to be able to tolerate it.
Luke Cage and Daredevil. Garbage.
Shows like Prison Break and The Walking Dead which had good first seasons, but just have writers who don't have a fecking clue how a good tv series always has to be wrapped up and not just spun out indefinitely.
Grouping those two together is sacrilege. It's Always Sunny and How I Met Your Mother. I don't appreciate shit american sitcoms. Big Bang Theory as well, even if I used to be able to tolerate it.

It's an excellent film, just as highlighted in the film review thread, it's more because of Mann's artistic approach than the plot.As I remember it that got bad reviews at the time but I read in the film review thread that it has since been re-assessed and is now rather highly rated. Still haven't got around to watching it, mind.
I havent seen Total Recall but it seemed pretty bland - Miami Vice is nothing like that and Farrell's performance is fine in it (though again, the performances aren't what makes that film great). After watching every episode of original Miami Vice I wouldn't even care to watch it, if I knew how pointless the 2006 version was. Crockett and Tubbs were essential characters to the 80's, now it's just Colin Farrell with a mullet and moustache trying his best Don Johnson impression.
Ironically Farrell also played in newest Total Recall version which is another perfect movie example to hate. Not trying to depreciate the actor, but he was clearly unlucky with roles in that time.
I was fine with your summarising of events and was happy to chalk things up to personal preference but your last sentence was completely needless so get off your high horse.Hank is pretty likeable, as is Walt for the majority of it. The show starts in the first few episodes with the RV crashing and them having to dispose of two bodies. One of which melts through a bathtub. There are about 20 amazing moments in the show I can think of off the top of my head. I agree it is a slow burner but you need that to appreciate the impact of things when they happen. Plus the acting is so good I happily watch any scenes that people call 'character development' or filler. I recently rewatched the whole show and I can tell you now apart from about ten scenes in the whole series, everything is relevant to something that ends up happening in the future.
Some people just don't seem to have the attention spans for shows like this, Sopranos and The Wire.
It's true! I wasn't referring to you personally as I don't know you but I have recommended it to friends I know have short attention spans and they struggled. That you thought it meant you might be saying somethingI was fine with your summarising of events and was happy to chalk things up to personal preference but your last sentence was completely needless so get off your high horse.
Not that it matters but I normally prefer slow burners and love The Sopranos for instance but I didn’t gel at all with Breaking Bad for all of the first two and a bit seasons.
When a lot of people really, really like a movie and talk about it as brilliant people that don't like it will hate said movie more than they dislike other movies that they didn't like. The reason being you don't like something and it gets thrown into your face again and again that people love it so you feel like you're taking crazy pills. Everyone has something that fits this bill. For me with movies it's anything Wes Anderson. Rushmore was OK, rest is just weird colors and centered frames, sometimes in stop-motion.What is with this inception hate? It's hardly Citizen Kane but it's a well made, well shot, well acted and stylishly executed piece of fine hokum.
So what is that makes this film great ? Original Miami Vice series had single episodes with far more interesting plot and character development, not to mention far better soundtrack and other smaller details. It was simply Miami Vice.I havent seen Total Recall but it seemed pretty bland - Miami Vice is nothing like that and Farrell's performance is fine in it (though again, the performances aren't what makes that film great).
I think you didn't buy into Mann's vision of it, simple as. Nilssy spoke about it in better words than I could, here (actually wasn't him but another review)So what is that makes this film great ? The 2006 version looks more like a generic cop film with added extensive swear rate, would rather watch Bad Boys than this.

BB reaches its peak for me around the middle to end of S3 and stays at that level pretty much til the end. I'd say it's worth revisiting if you got near that point.
I guess what I mean by it is when someone sees a show has almost hour long episodes and about 15-16 a season it can be daunting to commit to.I don't know about that...
I admittedly have a pretty poor attention span and loved Breaking Bad!
Thanks for this. It's definitely the tone of the movie. 2006 one is darker and I guess it didn't had neon lights flashing every two scenes which was good I guess. Just not the Miami Vice I fell in love with.I think you didn't buy into Mann's vision of it, simple as. The revenant. Unbelievable thats the movie that finally won him an oscar.Interstellar, that DiCaprio movie where he fought a bear, and how i met your mother.
Oh and the trailer park cnuts....
