I’d say he’s currently better than Matic from an athletic perspective. Like to tackle and run.
I'd suggest if being more athletic than Matic (at this point in his career) is our criteria, we're casting a very wide net.

Do contracts matter that much anymore. Sometimes clubs even extend it to make sure they get maximum value when they sell. We extended Evra's contract and sold him a month later.

If the lad has been scouted and they think he’s good enough it doesn’t really matter what nationality he is. In fact if anything being a native speaker only helps him settle quicker
My mate is a Leeds fan, watches them every week. He’s says Phillips is their best player and is surprised no one from the Premier League has taken him.

Harry Maguire, Andy Robertson, James Maddison and many others played in the Championship.
This is when we should be buying them, not a transfer later when their price has went through the roof.
The level of Championship is on par with many national leagues. And last year's top players are performing really well in EPL.: James, Mcginn,Grealish, Abrahams just to name a few.
So if we go for the right player,as we did with James, I think he ll be a success here.
Moreover as someone else said, there are less issues with acclimatisation.
He's good but not amazing. Definitely a favourite with Leeds fans for much the same reasons Herrera was with United. He works super hard, excellent defensively and is dirty and good at winding up the opposition in a way that is lovable when it's one of your players but detestable when it's an opponent. For a defensive midfielder in the Championship he is very good on the ball, less so when compared with elite DMs at big clubs.
I wouldn't be massively against this signing but I think we could do better. Unlike a lot of gems in the Championship he wouldn't be cheap. Leeds have already rejected several decent offers for him and he just signed a new contract so there is no bargain to be had like there was with James or there currently is with Bowen.

The only way this transfer would happen would be either if we put on a huge bid or else Leeds miss promotion again.

Watched a 10 minute video of him on YouTube and I'm sold.
5'10 but got a cracking leap on him, looks strong as an ox and quick too, seems like he's got a good reading of the game and racks up interceptions, similar style of tackling to Wan-Bissaka as in he just gets to the ball first and takes it off you and to top it all off he's got a pinpoint long pass on him. Would do brilliantly at the base of our midfield as a possession recycler and distributor.
The kind of player every other club, big or small, has but we don't. I'd take him in Jan if we could.

Well they add value on someone, say we buy Phillips for £30m but he was available in summer for £15-20m, people would berate Woodward for not getting him for cheaper.
Also, using Evra was a bad example, he'd told us he didn't want his contract extending but Woodward went ahead and did it anyway, that's how they ended up falling out.
It is not like he has suddenly become a good player. Signing him now for £30m-£40m would be typical of this club, when we could have signed him during the summer for half the price.

He's better than Emre Can; certainly more mobile. More experienced than Tonali (better able to handle PL). Cheaper than almost everyone else. Excellent replacement for Hererra, but 5 months late. I don't think we'll play him as a defensive midfielder, more a box-to-box. Plus - we are light in midfield anyway.

We do need two DMs, first team and backup, so this is a good buy for the backup position.
£27m is nearly double what a Championship side have payed for a player. Villa's squad improvements this summer were mostly about the £10m mark. Leeds really must consider whether one player in their side is worth that as much as £30m, when they can do a Villa and make 3 improvements with the same cash in hand.
Maybe good but he kicked on as soon as Bielsa was coaching him in a very particular style. United is obviously a massive move, but a step back in terms of being coached. Would he be able to cut it?
Leeds rejected all offers in the summer, as Bielsa sees him a a key player, and the club didn't want to sell against the managers wish.

I watched a number of Leeds games during the beginning of the last season and it was obvious that he was good enough for EPL. If the MUFC scouts did not take notice of him before this season they must be effing blind.
Sorry but can’t see Philips leaving for United, especially with interest from other Premier League clubs and the fact he’s from Leeds born and bred

There is a deference in extending contracts for players that are attracting attention of other clubs and extending those of duds. Smallings contract is from last year, he has left on loan and there is already talk of Roma wanting to make the move permanent
I’d say those circumstances are different though. Leeds could get up this season, United are shit and the squads in disarray. I think the appeal of abandoning your boyhood club for a bitter rival is a bit higher when Sir Alex Ferguson is still at his peak with a selection of world class talent at his disposal.

You are repeating what I said about the contracts adding value. Evra was always going to leave buying triggering his extend we got whatever small amount we sold him for. He could have walked on a free

He's a Leeds boy though and think it will be similar to Grealish in that he'll give Leeds one more season to get up and then move in the summer if it dosen't happen. Can't see him leaving in January.

Ha, I can't say that much. I've only seen Leeds a bit and whilst I reckon he'd a decent PL level midfielder, I think that's all he'll be.
Honestly, I wouldn't want him, but considering our options I don't think I'd say no either! Especially if it's in January as we need someone ASAP.
Ndidi is more of a destroyer than Phillips, but it should be said that Ndidi has improved his abilities on the ball under Rodgers.
Personally I think Phillips game is really good in most areas. His main area of improvement is the attacking part of his game, and when playing in the final third.
