Why would he not say it? He could have said that he wanted his players to preserve energy, it's nothing bad, but he didn't. City are not a team that goes easy if they can demolish you, they have proved it on numerous occasions and it would mean so much to destroy us in particular. Why would they spare us an embarrassing result?
At 3-0 the leg is won. He’s confident they can win at home in the next leg. He would have told them to keep it tight, keep a clean sheet and conserve energy. When Pep wins he’s usually respectful of the opposition.

Apart from making arguably the biggest howler of any United player this season to gift them the third?

Just had to boot it! Simple as that, he was ahead of their man, but somehow managed to trip himself up.
Didn’t think it was that big of a mistake, Jones and Lindelof were far worse. And I don’t think he was in any position to boot the ball

I'm sorry, have you watched City under Pep? How many times have they thrashed teams in the league by 4-5-6 goals advantage? It would be even better to do it against a rival, they beat Chelsea 5-0 last season.

There’s at least 2 players in Portugal right now that would instantly improve our team, not to mention the championship or any of the leagues outside the top 4. There’s zero fecking excuses for fielding that team again unless it’s in open protest against the people who are in charge of spending the cash

That hurt. Even though I expected City to win 3-0 I had forgotten what it felt like to be wildly outclassed. After the 3rd goal went in, our players were cinders. They were on the verge of being hysterical, the tackle attempts started getting reckless, and we were staring into the abyss. It felt like when City annihilated us in 2010, felt like we were about to receive 8 goals.

I think this group of players are showing their true ability which is not good enough. I also think Ole is showing he is not good enough. Ed is not good enough at his job either. 2 out of 3 of those things need to be changed, or we get to endure a decade *trying to get in* the Top 4 cup.

Fred is energetic but has no ability to read the game. He's reactive to everything. He's the polar opposite of Matic, who is an intelligent player, can make cutting passes, but is slower than a barge. Agree with all the criticism leveled at the others, no one really emerges today with a shred of dignity aside from Gomes and perhaps Williams.

It's the same refrain from when Fellaini signed: we need a midfield and these players are not good enough. No revelations. It's been this way for years.

We will agree to disagree. I felt City has taken their foot off the gas. Maybe they were tired but that makes our second half performance even more embarrassing. Other than the goal the only shot on target was a typical speculative shot from Rashford.

Delusional fans will think we got back into it in the second half. City completely switched off knowing the game was won conserving energy for the busy month ahead.
If they could have scored more they would have. We were basically playing with 10 men in the first half as Lingard is merely a passenger currently. The unforded errors on our part obviously didn't help things either. The introduction of Matic steadied us & allowed us to close them out.

City took the foot of the pedal. They must be part of the Ole in brigade. As are the other “Top 4” teams.

He was comfortably ahead of their man and somehow tripped himself up and let them in.

He's well off ready.

Dreadful first half City were half-asleep in the second. Sacking Ole and appointing Pochettino isn't going to solve anything in and of itself though. The likes of Jones and Lingard aren't suddenly going to become good enough. They were stinking up the place long before the current manager. There has to be investment in the squad, no matter who's in charge. The state of it is utterly embarrassing at the moment.

Behind the right goal post as "Whiteside shoots!"
It’s hard to understand how one of the largest and richest football clubs can fall so far.
Poor decisions after poor decisions and no-one really getting to grips with it because the money keeps pouring in. Why worry eh?

Someone like Gary Bennett wouldn't have taken that lying down. He's have legged one of the City defenders.

The gap in quality is embarrasing. Makes you wonder how the feck we managed to beat them not long ago.

Yeah but he has busted a gut to get into that position, maybe he could have booted it but it’s not so easy when you have thrown your whole body into getting into that position.

The lad played a good game, he showed plenty energy, drive and determination at both ends of the pitch, one of the few players to show composure on the ball and made some great attacking ventures forwards. He did get done a few times by Mahrez but I expect that considering that he was up against a fantastic player and he’s a young lad who is learning his trade. He isn’t first choice left back but he has shown plenty to suggest he should get loads more chances this year.

Lindelof involved in two of their three. Jones is actually better than him although he's been poor in the past too. When will Axel get an injury free run? Can't argue with the finish for the first, it was a beauty. Williams definitely our best left back now. Fred our best midfielder (excl. Pogba). Rashford, Martial and Greenwood should be our first choice front three. So we are light in defence and midfield mostly. Time to break the bank. Final point; our goal was excellent from the tackle to the pass to the strike.

Surely that must be the last we see of lingard in a Utd shirt. That was a fecking embarrassment in the first half from him especially. Just play Gomes or play a fecking traffic cone it will be better than lingard.
Depressing game. If the final score had been 7-1 don’t think anyone could complain. They are light years ahead of us.
Our 2-1 at the etihad will happen from time to time but if we play city 20 times they’ll win about 17 of them.
Seemed like the effort and application was there from us which makes it even worse........ just no way near enough quality or structure to the team.

Interesting that most of you seem more than happy to get the daggers out for Jones, yet seem happy to brush lindelofs performance under the carpet. He was far worse than Jones.

Ole got tactically outsmarted by Pep big time.

Not entirely sure what we drilled into them pressing wise in pre season but it just doesnt work, we dont press aggressive enough or intelligently, the opposition always have a spare man or space in behind our man that's pressing.

This is like death by water torture, City treated the 2nd half like a practice session until we scored and then they clamped dopwn again.

Ole did say he has the backing but only will spend if the right players are available. Frankly, there are at least a dozen players that would strengthen us right now.

We were completely outclassed by a much better team, which was no surprise. Thankfully, City eased up second half, which saved a five or six goal defeat. The gulf between the two clubs at the moment is enormous. We are packed with average players; we have a rookie manager and owners who don't care. This club is drifting along rudderless. We need at least six signings, if we are to compete at the top.

Were lucky that it didn't end with 0-5 by 1st half, thank to Sterling.

Starting lineup was dogshit but Im just a armchair manager, what do i know. Maybe geniuses at United believe Phil Jones and Lindelof aren't recipes for disaster and Lingard is still 16.

Both McT and Pogba are injured and unavailable for weeks other than Garner or Gomes we have no available attacking mids, apart from Mata who is slower than me

So....Did we look better with Lingard on the pitch and Matic on the bench, or with Matic on the pitch and Lingard in the shower ?

That’s the thing though, isn’t it? I wouldn’t have picked the team and neither would you, because we aren’t world class football coaches and we don’t know what we are doing. We have no pedigree and no history of managing a team in the top league.

The team does better when better players are available, that’s the case with any manager, and it doesn’t make sense to judge him saying “we sometimes win when all the players are fit, but not always”

It’s the display that’s the problem, not the result. It was abject and a real shambles. You can’t slot players into the system to do a job because there is no system.

I love Ole, but I love Manchester United more than his desire to give coaching at this level a go and see how it turns out.

It’s been a year, there is no plan. It’s time to wake up and do what’s best for Manchester United and the future of the football club.
we had a midfield of Pereira, Fred and Lingard what on earth did you expect
Pep targeted the midfield as it is obvious to all how poor it is .
We brought Matic on for the second half but that is the only option we had .
This is the worst midfield seen at United for decades for gods sake stop being surprised / annoyed when things like this happen it is inevitable we need major money spending starting now !

What would a legitimate CEO when confronted with the performances of this season, without hesitation the Manager would be replaced, players would be signed and the coaching staf overhauled.

Even here in the poor standard A League, managers are moved on swiftly if results aren't meeting expectations. The difference is that generally the club is run by football people and attendances are a direct result of results, and the is no massiveEPL money feeding the club.

A decisive management would move on Ole and enter the January window with a plan to add more signings in the summer in an attempt to resurrect th club.

Unfortunately, the biggest club in the world is now owned by people who care only about dividends and clubs selling value, as shopping centre operators this makes sense. The CEO and his pathetic assistant are basically glorified accountants with no football experience, parachuted into the club, paid handsomely as a reward for enabling the owners to get possession of Man Utd without spending any of their own cash.

Olé s appointment was a a quick and unnecessary move to try and create favour with the Stretford End, when a competent CEO would have waited and searched for an experienced and suitable candidate.

As someone who was captivated by Law and Charlton as a youngster and then Ronaldo and Keane from the other side of the world , this is as bad as it gets. If we see no firm action then that says it all, big clubs act big and don't accept mediocrity , look at Real Madrid, Inter, etc etc. we now fail the test of being a big club, and the common denominators are Glazers and Woodward sorry tale that is there for all but the blind to see.

Ole post match:
- Struggled first half, good reaction second half.
- Didn't deal with City's tactics well enough.
- Frustrated with square and back passes.
- Gives PSG example as to how we can come back in the second tie.
The game where PsG had 72% possession, 12 shots to our 5, gave us two goals on a plate through huge individual blunders and a third from a last second handball. Don't get me wrong, it was a wonderful result and we did defend well, but Ole is mad if he's using that performance as an example of our ability. For one thing, City aren't going to hand us goals on the plate like PsG did.

It was almost funny to watch the lads warm up from the stretford end. When they were doing the lay off ans shoot drills everyone except Rashford completely missed and didnt test the keeper at all. Rashford went straight down the middle and into the keepers body. Ominous signs...

I thought we started well, Fred looked like he was going to dominate, set up some lovely plays. Ref did nothing for us when James was getting kicked to bits. When it opened up for Silva and he smashed it in it was clear it was going to be a long night.

All downhill from there and when De Gea kicked the ball out of play trying to pass it 20 yards to Williams it felt like the entire ground realised collectively, we are utter shite at the minute.

Bad game, move on to Norwich at home on Saturday, fingers crossed we can pick up 3 points in the league.

I film some of the games and you can tell most nights who is going to win by this alone. Some nights half the guys don't hit the target from 18 yards.

You must be joking. Jones is finished after tonight. Should never have outlived the likes of Smalling, Michael Keane etc.

I’m actually not too depressed about that game tonight. We must remember that despite the fact that by their own standards, City have been mediocre this season, they are still one of the best 4 teams on the planet. They are currently several classes above us and had we won tonight, it would have been a shock. That said, 3-1 really flattered us, which is a bit concerning. We had a few bright spots. I thought that Fred was great. Alongside Rashford, he’s the best we have to offer. I know that Phil Jones isn’t everyone’s cup of tea, but you can never criticise his effort and tonight, he was a warrior. The really good news is that we are only 2 goals down and we can go to their place and turn it around. This is a majorly important competition for us on the basis that before kickoff it was the one comp we have a chance of winning. We need to go there and attack from the start. None of this ‘digging in and hoping for a breakaway’ because at 2 goals down that just won’t work.

City stopped pressing, stopped man marking on goal kicks and basically dropped back about 20 yards. It was obvious they took the foot off the gas in what was a relatively unimportant cup tie where they were comfortably leading and still had another 90 to score more goals if needed.

Williams showed good recovery pace but then somehow managed to fall over his own feet and gift De Bruyne the ball with a free run. Jones' defending was laughable however. He just needs to leave now, he's a running joke.

Pereira for all his industry and odd impressive ball just isn't consistent enough within a game to warrant starting for United. Lingard even more so, he's devoid of any confidence and can't even control the ball, he needs to go.
