Atletico Madrid Discussion

Haven’t been overly impressive in the CL either so far really.

They werent last year either. This Liverpool team knows how to win, they do not lose 2 legged ties.

There is only one result here, I can see Athleti getting a right hiding.

You've also never seen anything like their defence.

It's a fascinating match up

Just saw the la liga position. Atletico have one of the best defensive records but the joint worst goalscoring in the top 14.

Atletico are still tough for the big teams to play. Barcelona only won against them with a late Messi goal and Real Madrid only won by one goal.
Liverpool are gonna win but it's going to be really close.
Would say a 1-1 in the first leg and a 1-0 at Anfield.

Liverpool find it tough against low blocks, 4-4-2s and well organized defenses though so there's always that.

looking back at theyre previous CL seasons. I really hope Simeone and his staff can churn a 2-legged win over this LFC team. Because they are without a doubt beatable.

Yeah, they can't finish to save their lives. They actually do create a couple huge chances in every game, they just keep missing them

The defence on the other hand is terrifying. The best it's been since 15/16

But this is a two legged affair. What happened in our second leg?

In our second leg our squad was more depleted than in the first leg. We had Andreas play as a CM ffs, point they struggled against a proper bus. Mctominay and Fred did a brilliant Jon on the day in the first leg. If atletico have the likes of Saul and Partey fit we could have a good match up. But like I said in a different post football is unpredictable Liverpool could get an early goal and tear them apart on the counter and it could be vice versa

Was an entertaining game tonight v Valencia. Conceded twice from set plays which is unlike Atletico. Also thought they were very weak down the left as Wass and Torres combined well and created loads of space so TAA will be interested by that.

Last half hour they barely threatened and seemed low on energy. Guess they were happy with the 2-2.

You are massively overrating their defence. You talking about the same defence that has lynchpin Gimenez and two RB out. Lodi is struggling atm and Saul at leftback is another disaster waiting to happen.

I watched the Valencia match and they played with high pressure and intensity. Atletico defend narrowly and are experts at locking down the central areas but Valencia bombed the flanks and poured crosses in. It will be like the Liverpool match, except maybe it will be a slaughter.

I'm not. It's statistically the best in europe. Real Sociedad and Barcelona(supercup) are the only two teams that broke them down, repeatedly

Next best is what Valencia did yesterday

Whether that will translate against Liverpool or not is another story

How is that? They've let in 17 goals in 24 matches. Real is 14 in 23. Liverpool is 15 in 25.
Better underlying numbers across the board. Teams finished worse against us and you, but we both give up more and better chances than them(not a by much, of course)

That said, the league's been poor in attack this year. It's possible their defence(and ours) are made to look better by bad attacks

Think their golden era is well and truly over and I don't see Simeone staying past next season at the absolute best. Unfortunately I see Liverpool easily beating them.

Honestly, what statistics are you talking about? They don't have the least conceded goals in Europe, their xGA aren't exactly the best and many European clubs have lesser shots against than them.

The defence they have now is a makeshift defence of 3rd choice RB Vrsaljko, either one of Hermoso or Felipe, both in their first season, and maybe Saul at leftback. They have conceded 7 goals in 6 games since Gimenez was injured. By contrast they conceded the same amount of goals in the 15 games Gimenez played in.

Hardly the best defence in the world we are seeing next week. I will be hoping that they knock Liverpool out but I wouldn't put too much hope into it.

xGA are the best in the top 4 leagues iirc, xG of shots on target and PSxGA are also the best. They just don't concede good chances, period

The beauty of their defence is that it's still an elite one even with a lot of backups

You're right that they're not in top shape, but they're still likely to be the best defence liverpool has seen all season

My website has Real Madrid as the best xGA. Previously it was Atletico but it probably went up in recent games. Real Madrid, Liverpool and Bayern all have lesser shots conceded than them.

I don't think you still can call their defence an elite one especially when they have their first choice CB and RB out. However their strength this season has been their midfield solidity which made their back four look better than it actually is.

But you're right, they are probably the best defence Liverpool has seen all season.

Norwich yesterday, Utd and Monterrey were pretty good.

Classic Atletico that. Liverpool need to sign Ronaldo on loan before the second leg as he's the only one who actually score past them in knock outs in last few years.

Out of interest when did a English club last beat them over two legs in either CL or europa?

According to Wikipedia, Bolton in the 07/08 UEFA Cup (was that the year they went to the final?).

Faced Liverpool, Chelsea, Leicester and Arsenal since then and won all of them.

EDIT: I was thinking of Fulham - Bolton got knocked out by Sporting Lissabon the round after that :nervous:

Must say I am impressed with the Lodi guy, left-back.
Why don't United buy more Atletico players, not just goalkeepers and strikers, their footballers know to play football and defend?!

Jeez that long.

Just checked and they beat Liverpool over two legs in semi final of Uefa cup in 09/10 and then Fulham in the final so they've had the sign over English clubs long before Simeone even turned up.

He's probably been mentioned but does Thomas Partey have a ridiculously high buy out clause like Saul does? He seems an obvious fit but never seems to be seriously linked to anyone. Had another very good game tonight breaking out play.

I must say I was surprised at how easily they controlled the Liverpool attack. The whole team was incredibly compact, Liverpool was essentially playing around their shape the entire match.

How did Saul do tonight,I saw that he scored the winner but don't know anything else about his performance.

well he was widely regarded as the best left back in brazil, and available for 15m quid. its not like he was some hidden gem, or even a risky business

Anfield will be different though. A 1-0 lead is not enough. Fair play for winning, hopefully they can have a great return game and keep it cool

Oi get in line, I defended (heh) Atletico first!

:(

I don't think this will be that straight forward.

I believe El Cholo and Atletico will be able to raise their game, as it will suit them to play against the relative workman-like Liverpool. Don't get wrong, I'm not saying Liverpool aren't creative or won't dominate possesion but when they've come up against a proper solid defensive team like us, both times they've struggled. El Cholo and his teams have only gone out in the CL against genuine mercurial talents like Ronaldo's Madrid and Juve. Will your Hendersons, Wijnaldums and Milners really break down with ease this rugged Atletico team?

Ok, granted I don't watch much of them and maybe I am basing my opinion of the Atletico of yesteryears but I see this being a very very hard fought contest if Liverpool are going to win.

Agreed with others though it's still only a very slender advantage.

Hope they do everyone a favour and knock Liverpool out.

Great win. Very expected. But repeating the feat at Anfield will be the tough part. In Europe Liverpool have a tendancy to start well there which sets them up well to run away with things.

The internet is for moment like this: I told you so
Tbf I did mention this:

The only way I can see Atletico winning is a dodgy goal and two legs of shithousery, otherwise I think it will be as straightforward as they come.

In the end, they did get a dodgy goal and shithoused the first leg.

That said I think Liverpool still have another gear in them for the second leg. They were passive and probably wary of the second goal, which explains why they didn't take enough risks in attack.

If Altetico do knock them out, I'd gladly eat my words for writing them off, which I what I want anyway.

When the draw came out, I wrote that Atlético would cause Liverpool serious problems and was widely derided. Typical!

While Liverpool might still be favourites to go through, this will be really tough. No team in the PL can defend like Atlético can. Not to mention the dark arts that Simeone can pull from the hat.

Hindsight bias. There was not much to suggest Atlético would be ready for Liverpool. Their la Liga campaign is not even mediocre.

It’s not hindsight because I wrote it when the draw came out. Just someone who watches La Liga regularly (yes, there’s more than just Barsa and Real) and doesn’t blindly swallow the “EPL is by far the best league in the world” line. They have good football teams and managers in other places too.

I think I said the same as him over the weekend. Klopp hates a parked bus, it was always a bad match up for Liverpool.

When they are on song, they are simply the most defensively organised team in the world. The best at what they do.

Even 2004 Mourinho would be taking notes.

Still can't see them going through against Liverpool. Look at the Juve game last year, second leg will be similar to that.

Not true at all, if you follow la liga you’d be completely aware that Atlético wasn’t a good match up, check the previous pages.

Atletico are having a bad season result wise, performances are fine though. They are still excellent defensively but keep missing big chances in the league.

Liverpool have been so good in Europe for the last few years due to the fact that European teams all play into their hands. Atletico are probably the only team in the CL that would play 11 behind the ball at home.

Also teams in the PL probably have tried parking the bus against Liverpool, but the quality of the bus has been crap. Last night you saw a bus that was the elite of Europe. The second leg will probably be more tougher than last season's CL semi against Barcelona.

Their defensive performances in big games are always boosted by Simeone and his tactics. His micromanagement and ability to create a nearly-perfectly working unit at the back with basically any set of players is insane. Remember Savić playing for Manchester City? Or Filipe Luís rotting on Chelsea's bench in-between his stints at Atletí?
