....and Solskjaer has won it!
This all want to be here is so overrated. If they turn out good and we don’t progress at their rate they will not want to be here. It’s just such a flawed plan. Do you think Liverpool and City players want to be there because of the prestige of the clubs?
They have the right attitude is probably what he should have said.

I'm fed up of us overpaying for prima donnas.

Glad we've stopped being a desperate, overpaying club.

I feel the most important thing for our club right now is not to win trophies or even challenge for the CL places but to find committed players who genuinely want to be at the club, rather than the quick fix mercenary types that LVG and Jose threw at us - which I believe is what Ole is doing that right now. You'll have noticed that each of Ole's signings has had, to varying degrees, a positive impact on the club. The first three were arguably our best performers in the first half of the season, the likes of which we haven't seen from a new signing since as far back as RVP?

There are a few things about Ole signings that set them apart from those of his predecessors. I'll list them:

  • They all want to be here. Clearly.
  • They have each performed to or above expectations.
  • They rarely (if ever) get injured, unlike their teammates who've been dropping like flies all season.
  • You never hear anything negative about them in the media.
These may seem like your basic expectations from any new signing, but it's something we haven't seen in our new players since Fergie was in charge. If Ole continues to identify the correct targets for his system and the club in general, has he not earned the right to remain charge until the rebuild is complete?
If results on the pitch don't matter then Ole is not the right manager for Man Utd.

We payed a world record fee for Harry Maguire and more or less a world record fee for a right back.

Yeah but we are still a desperate overpaying club.
Every man and his dog knows United has a lot of money, and will always have to pay a premium when taking players off PL teams. Fernandes at 50 mill is a steal, though.

The post you replied to was about not buying primadonnas, so the prices United have to pay for players is a different discussion.

We don't have to go for the overpriced players though. At 80-85 mil I don't think Maguire is a good deal. Compare his fee and quality to VVD. City have also been loaded, but we've actually broken transfer records more than them.

You could also compare Fernandes to Joao Felix. It's kind of pointless.

Nobody thinks we got a good deal for Maguire. Leicester basically had us over a barrel. 100 million for Koulibialy or bust.

Well when you compare them Fernandes is good value for money. It's not really pointless when we don't have unlimited funds.

It sure is not pointless aquiring Fernandes for half a Pogba when we don't have unlimited funds.

Continue winning games?

One month of decent football won't convince me, just as December didn't. That said, I loved our January window and the squad looks much more balanced now than it did at the end of December so he's every chance of changing my mind completely.
That's fair enough.

So Aguero, Toure and David Silva went to Man City because of the presitage of the club? Foolishness.
You can be both a world-class footballer and possess a strong mentality, you know, the two are not mutually exclusive of one another.

I'm not 100% on the point you're trying to make, sorry. You're either getting too hung up on this 'prestige business' or missing the point entirely. I'll try again. The type of player Ole is intent on bringing to the club all seem to share similarly strong character traits such as a positive mental attitude, reliability, and determination. We didn't see those traits in any of LVG's or Jose's signings at any point during their respective reigns.

Who said they didn't matter? I only said that while the rebuild process is ongoing, results on the pitch are secondary to progression in terms of priority. It would be nice to have both, of course, but it rarely works out that way. You can't have your cake and eat it.

Money and genuine chance at the highest trophies.
Meaning what?

I find it funny how gullible this fanbase is.

We should all hope our results improve and we make Champions League. I’d be over the moon.

But for people to truly think next season will be any better with Ole in charge we are in for a predictable mistake. Just like we witnessed giving Mourinho his 3rd season.

Oh well. We live and we don’t learn.
I find it strange you can't see things picking up next season. Obviously there's no guarantees in football, but I fail to see how a team continuing on the progress made so far, boosted by the injured players back and with the addition of hopefully another one or two top players cannot have a better season.

More creativity in the team, as we're already seeing with Fernades, could be the difference in the scrappy games, which should lead to much more consistent results next season. For me, Ole's already doing the much more difficult job of regularly getting results against the top 6, something Pochettino failed to do too often.

It's pretty obvious what i meant. Players come to Liverpool and City because of big money and a chance of winning the biggest trophies.

I’m not getting caught up in it. Quite the reverse. I think others are getting caught up in this culture rest, as put previously. Only one player came for the wrong reasons well two. DiMaria and Sanchez that’s it. Too much is being made of poor signings. But there’s a list of successful signings the teams have just not worked out and they have been many reasons for that. It’s not no new miracle signings are working not. Our player of the year is probably Fred and he’s a Mourinho signings. So it’s a rubbish argument, like most things we are giving credit to.

They may have joined City for the money, sure, but the same cannot be said of Liverpool because they don't buy big name stars, they create them. They've got to where they are now through incredible recruitment.

I'm not sure what any of that has to do with Ole and the rebuild process though.

You don't think Klopp is an attraction? Liverpool are a big and a wealthy club just havn't been as big as us for a long time. No i'm not really sure what this has got with Ole and the rebuild process either. But we pay very high wages for players like Rashford and Martial. I think we pay them more than Spurs pay for Harry Kane and what Liverpool pays for Salah and Mane. So I would still say at the moment the attraction of United is more about wages and brand, than it is about winning trophies and the pull of Ole.

Wanting your team to win and play nice football is plastic @troylocker?

Strange definition that mate.
There is a difference between wanting to win and play nice football and only care about winning and playing attractive football, and not care about the people in the club. All supporters want to win and play nice football, but support their team through thick and thin, caring about the team, not only when the results are good. A plastic fan cares only about results and drifts off or spreads shit when the results doesn’t satisfy him.

I'd argue that ADM, Sanchez, Pogba, Bastian (not even going to attempt his Surname) Matic, and Mata were all panic buys, purchased for a singular purpose; instant success. No thoughts were spared for their mental capacity or whether they would gel with the existing squad. They were signed as a quick fix to an ongoing problem.

Ole at least has a strategy in mind, he's not only targeting players with ability but mental strentgh as well. This is something LVG and Jose either ignored, or worse, they were incapable of identifying a weak mentality.

You're undervaluing the impact these poor signings had on the club. We're in this weak position right now largely because of LVG's and Jose's awful signings. They spent in the region of £650 million between them, and all that remains is Shaw and Pogba, one of them no longer wants to be a United player and the other one has been outplayed by an 18 yo.

It's all in hindsight isn't it? Nobody before would argue that players like Bastian, Sanchez and Mata had poor mentalities. And I don't think there is anything wrong with signing players hoping that they would make an instant impact. That's what we are getting with Bruno right now.

I am sorry, but I really struggle to understand your point. United are recruiting good players at the moment. They're either coming for the money, the prestige of the club, the project, the team mates, the manager or a combination of factors. Does it really matter as long as they want to come and do the best they can do for the club?

Don’t remember that being the opinion at the time. We could sign Toni Kroos in the summer and not much people will be like it’s Bastian all over again. Eden Hazard.. I doubt we’ll be hearing what’s the thought process behind this signing. Most of the signings made sense at the time like I said for certain reasons they didn’t work out. Di Maria looks fine at PSG, Alexis has lost pace, Bastian was injury prone. Mata needed a good footballing team and better players. Matic did what was expected.

Because we're worse under him than under any of our other post-SAF managers? Because he's never shown anything in his career to suggest he's capable of competing at that level? Because we're still unbelievably inconsistent and we'd probably need to spend a lot to have a squad good enough to compete with such an average manager.

It's simply really, you'd be talking about spending hundreds of millions to even consider challenging under Ole, whereas there are other, more proven managers out there who have, at least, challenged for titles spending far less than that. Which makes more sense?

Best case scenario under Ole is that he leaves a good squad for our next manager, which it currently looks like he could do. And hopefully gets us a top four finish at some point.

Tbh that's just plain and simple untrue. Us fans at OT to a man will tell you this is the most excited we have been since Ferguson under Ole. Yes it shows how bad we have been but if you can't see something is being built then you either don't want to see it or you simply don't understand football .
Most United fans want Poch as the next boss . What has he won ?

Moyes LVG and Jose emptied OT mostly due to negative boring football .
Oles signings have been super and granted at times this season things have been poor believe me it's never been as bad as it was at times under the other managers .
It's just lazy to say he hasn't coached at this level before because everyone has to start somewhere and overall he's done a decent job

You clearly didn't spend a season watching the LVG team.

Haha how true is this . I was actually dreading the flight over from Ireland every other week . Remember the amount of 0.0 at HT that season . It really was the worst I've ever witnessed

Decent is not good enough. We are United, our aim should be to compete to win the epl and cl, with Ole we wont. If you are happy with a top 4 finish...with another 200m we might make it.

What's your take on Matic's comment on Ole? It's quite similar to what Fred said that he is young and learning, and getting better at his job.

You’re definition of “panic buy” is very odd Random.

These were absolutely buys that the manager made hoping for instant success but they weren’t “panic buys” at all, not unless you completely ditch the dictionary meaning for “panic”.

The definition of a panic signing is Ighalo, made because our manager and recruitment team had focused way too heavily on the future and not enough on the present, then ended up 8th or 9th in the league by the end of Jan with serious squad/injury issues.
