That's a very miserable way of looking at the clapping and not accurate at all. At this moment in time the NHS is under extreme pressure with staff feeling pretty demoralised. Things like this can help keep you going at that point. When you're exhausted, upset, doubting what you do. Just that little bit of public acknowledgement makes it a touch easier to pick yourself back up and carry on.
I get it, my point is that for these moments they're great but they're forgotten very quickly by the public. I see it every day and they deserve more than applause, they deserve working conditions to allow them to do their work. It's like asking them to juggle with one arm tied behind their back. I mean my other half hasn't been tested yet and she's coming into contact daily with potential carriers, nothing miserable about it - it's reality sadly.

One thing on the self employed tax issue people seem to have not noticed...

He said to keep on working. That means building sites, cleaners, all self employed people still out there if they can and still packed tubes.

I noticed that, I don't think it's his remit to make those statements, i have a feeling that we'll have another wave of measures from Boris tomorrow. They still shouldn't be working now off the back of the announcement today though. Police powers kicked in today, and he can now enforce that policy officially. Plus the death rate going up today gives him the argument and logic to make that call.

But she's going to keep facing that situation either way. It's wrong, but that's reality.

Taking a few moments to just hear appreciation shows that throughout all this, there's many of us who still want to stick together. There's many who still see people who are actual heroes.

I didn't know about the clap at 8 prior to it happening in my affluent and likeminded street but I guessed it was to do with the NHS. My dim neighbours either side of us were doing it outside their houses and then they fecking went over and started having a chat and their sets of kids are now playing together. One of the adults has a horrendous cough to boot. I bet the NHS workers would be thrilled with such a magnanimous gesture by these sets of Einsteins.

This is a great thread to learn about the population density and urbanization of Sweden and now the ins and outs of filing tax returns if you're self-employed.

You joke, but everyone seems to have overlooked the comments about "bringing tax all into line" from those snakes...

So soon you might have a quad bike and I'll be walking like a peasant :(
Oh, it'll be fine. In my new world there will be no need for money because there will be nothing to buy.
Were you all clapping over a roast?

I woke up to the clapping then joined out of my window. Nice to see the street appreciating the NHS :)

Agreed.

My sister who is suffering as a head nurse right now might downplay it, but I can tell it means something. All you guys in public service are fecking heroes right now.
She'll likely be embarrassed and play it down but yeah she'll have a warm feeling inside and the next time she feels low she'll get the warm feeling again to get her refocused on what needs to be done.

I get it, my point is that for these moments they're great but they're forgotten very quickly by the public. Yeah the vast majority of people don't appreciate any of our key public services unless they have need to use them or they receive their assistance. That's life though isn't it? People are like that with everything! Our services have been stripped bare in recent times under austerity and no one seems overly bothered. No one stuck up for the fire service or the police when there were screwed over with their pensions. No one batted an eyelid when Doctors, Nurses, Firefighters and Police officers had their pay frozen for year after year essentially resulting in a pay cut given the rise of inflation. . I could go on. The point is though shows of appreciation like this do help. That's because the people in those roles are not motivated by money but by public service and the sacrifices they make every single day show just that.

People should remember things like this. Some will. Sadly many are that self absorbed they won't.

Oh i'm firmly in that camp, don't get me wrong. However i see it second hand daily the reality of what is happening. No need to sugar coat it so everyone feels warm. I would love people to put their effort into pressuring government in getting those heroes the equipment they need. It's like sending people into war without any armour!

Well they get a lump sum in June for the three months, i can't see HMRC paying double bubble for the self employed, the worry of this is those that will exploit (whether intentionally or due to cashflow) the system and working and then claiming the support. The question they have to address quickly is getting those first payments out in April, not in June.

And @Redlambs send my best to your sister. Your family must be sick with worry but she'll be fine. She has one great big second family around her and with you all together she'll push though it. Hope things get sorted with your finances too. Chin up mate.

Doing nothing wrong in my eyes. They are social distancing. People walking their dogs in the countryside is not spreading the virus. It's spreading rapidly in London because thats where there is the most concentration of people especially on public transport.
Yeah if thats all they're doing, but they are obviously driving out there and you can imagine a lot of them (lets be honest probably most of them) are stopping at petrol stations on the way to and back from the countryside, for fuel, water, coffee, snacks to use the loo etc. Potentially spreading the virus over many surfaces if they're infected and don't know it yet, effectively carrying the virus from one part of the country to another.

Thought the clapping was great, expected for there to be a lot of miserable cnuts in my mums estate but loads came out their doors and balconies.

of course the urgency should be to provide the nhs with all the resources and support they need, but a public acknowledgment of what they are doing for our nation is just good stuff.

The clapping was nice, but I also thought it was a bit surreal and creepy in a way. Like an episode of the Twilight Zone or something, everybody suddenly clapping and getting together before the bomb drops or something in the next scene.

Wasn't helped by the fact someone round here decided to blast a recording of air raid sirens.

Holy shit, you lot revel in the misery.

Yes, this situation is fecking abysmal, but the clapping and cheering was a lovely moment and is absolutely a morale boost to NHS workers. My gf is a nurse and was made up by it.

And yes, they're underfunded and undervalued, but that doesn't make the applause any less appreciated. Just let them have their moment FFS, it's much less than they truly deserve, but it's something.

I’ve been feeling bad about how much I participated in kick-starting the whole Sweden debacle, so it’s really nice that somebody out there appreciated it :)

I am in need of a deputy. @SteveJ already has the position of chancellor locked up because he's got compromising photos of me with Aunt Bessie and Zippy from Rainbow.
Is Aunt Bessie the woman who makes roast potatoes?

Well I got my Mum a lovely bunch of flowers for her birthday today and we had chocolate cake and she was so excited to clap for the NHS as she used to work in the service. I think she had a memorable birthday with her favourite child.

Sadly the truth is that the whole world is at War and there is not a nation that has enough tanks or equipment. Each of us is scrambling for the same finite amount of provisions with nowhere near enough either in stock or being produced.
