There's a lot going on in the world right now and much of it has spilled over into various discussions here on the Caf. It's been a difficult few months for everybody and tensions have been high on the forum, reflecting those in society during the recent protests and the Covid pandemic. Much of this has been focused in the Current Events and General Forum.

Such heated discussion has inevitably led to a lot of confrontation and division among many posters, and it's turned quite ugly at times. As a community we need to get a hold of this and tone it down a few notches. This is a place of opinion and debate, open to all who are prepared to respect our clearly stated rules. We are all entitled to express our opinions on a topic without being disrespected, labelled, trolled, threatened, discriminated against or hounded by other posters. Sadly that's happening far too often in many threads at the moment and it has to stop.

Moderating is particularly challenging at times like this and every mod is trusted to use their best judgement. Not easy when the discussions in question are so volatile and divisive. So we mods do, and will continue to, make mistakes. We're human and caught up in all this like everybody else. But that doesn't justify overt attacks on the mod team, so that also needs to stop. We take this all very seriously and are doing our best to keep these forums an inclusive and enjoyable space for everyone.

But ultimately we as a community must self-regulate. We are each of us responsible for own behaviour on here. We all need to be considerate of each other and treat one another with respect. Yes other people's viewpoints may not align with yours, but that does not give you the right to attack them personally. Please be constructive and not aggressive. Remember: criticise the post, not the poster. We believe in trying to educate people through reasoned debate. As events in the world right now prove, anger and aggression solve nothing.

And to be clear, racist behaviour and content is dealt with in the strictest manner by the mod team and is a fast-track to a permaban. However, calling other posters racist is not acceptable either. That is an extremely serious accusation and has become an all too common occurrence in various threads and has to stop. If you see racist content report it to the mods and we'll deal with it.

So in summary - the temperature on here (like the world in general) is very hot right now. I'm asking all of you to make a concerted effort to stay cool and be respectful to each other. We're a community and we're all in this together.

I agree. Now is not the time to be say anything controversial and incite argument.

In less than a week we have footy back with our best manager since Sir Alex leading us. We will have the World Class Paul Pogba pulling the strings and feeding Martial up front. What is not to love?

Great post and I agree entirely. As a Liverpool fan on here, I'm very much an outsider but this has been and continues to be one of the best football forums online which I enjoy being a part of.
We're all fighting our own battles and being on here can be an escape sometimes. If the "be kind" sentiments from earlier this year continue to be adopted by the majority on here, then this will continue to be a great place to chat to people.
Oh, and no I'm not expecting people on here to be congratulating Liverpool. My expectations are realistic :D

Yeah I've had to take a break from the George Floyd thread it is just a loop of the same arguments. It's a shame though as following the developments is really interesting and this site is probably better than any news site for that.

This really is a much needed thread. The forum for few years now have been a very hostile place and each discussion turns into a war. I hope we all calm down and tone it down a little while discussing. There's really no need for that.

Excellently written post.

It's got to the point now where I read the threads but stop myself posting (apart from the odd one here and there).... everything seems so polarised.

The topics of politics, CV19 and racism are very complex and I'd find it hard enough to verbally explain some views let alone get them across in a written post.

The real world right now shows us that a lack of discussion and tolerance of differing opinions only leads one way. While there will always be posts which are completely unacceptable (and are rightly pulled up), the rest - however much they differ from our own viewpoint - need to be accepted for what they are... an opinion.

Football is the glue holding us together. Good thing we can start sniffing it again soon.

I long for that collective escapism sport provides from a seemingly perfect storm of complex affairs going on in the year of our lord 2020. Of course these issues can be discussed but my god I’m going to go crazy if we don’t enjoy life at least once in a while. Football is ultimately trivial compared to the issues that have been discussed these past few weeks, but it provides that escapism which in my opinion we should visit at least from time to time, but never stay.

Good post and a necessary one at that. I've been avoiding said forums lately. The heated arguments are tiresome at best.

Great post Niall, and a very much needed reminder. With the world is going crazy we need to hold on to our sanity.

Great post.

Quarantines did my head in I tell you. I guess it affected other people too, and their temperament.

Good post as always Niall.

A lot of posters are lucky I retired from mod duties some years ago or there would have been a lot more of permabans

Reason I only read the football forums. Funny a number of those who are loudest on generals call the football posters the crazy ones.

Thanks Niall, it needed saying. It's the differences we all share as one that makes this forum unique. There are thousands of echo chamber forums out there that clearly none of us here are interested in, so we should appreciate what we have.
