Under the Shadow was really good. Iranian horror set during the Iran - Iraq war. Thematically similar to The Babadook and had a few decent jumps, as well as commenting on the marginalisation of women in that culture. So, if Iranian, feminist, psychodrama is your thing, you're onto a winner.

Under the Shadow is great @Eckers99! Went to see it at the cinema with my dad and sister and we all really enjoyed it.

I particularly loved the bit when

the black and white cloak swept across the screen. It was really unusual but stuck with me as one of the most haunting scenes I've ever seen on screen.

Agreed, under the shadow was really good. Kermode put it as his number one film of 2016

The Arrival (1996 Charlie Sheen version) is now on the Horror Channel. Great movie. Very intelligent and intense sci-fi flick.

Just watched Maniac (1980). A pretty cool, creepy slasher film, had quite a unique feeling/atmosphere to it. Some pretty brutal murders in it

Couldn't find the old 'movies you want to see' thread, think it was titled. Also no Netflix umbrella thread so let's resurrect this thread. Didn't want to start a new thread over something "planned" and not current or released.

I hope they do this remake well.

Gonna be a series or just a movie?

The IT part 1 remake was very good, but the second part was terrible. I hope he do it right.

Going to rewatch the original one of these days.

I haven't seen a good truly scary horror for ages only just come across this thread so will read with interest and hopefully discover one. I want something that will keep me awake and wondering about every little noise that plays on your mind

I cant stand horrors with stupid characters that make stupid decisions. I like when the characters actually show some intelligence as it makes it scarier. If I ever made a horror film my number one trait of said film would be the characters are not to be stupid

Best one I've seen in a while was Hush on Netflix. I think because the lady was deaf you felt more threat for her. Plus she wasnt stupid and actually used her brain she didnt just run around aimlessly

A quiet place was good

I liked the Jackals as well it seems to have quite mixed reviews online but I found it really quite chilling and well lit which made the bad characters more threatening

Texas Chainsaw films are good

I also really liked the Purge films and the TV series based on them its something a bit different and you could faintly seeing Trump having some mad cap idea to do similar. The siren is creepy it makes you think what would you do if it actually took place

I dont tend to find ghost films scary with the possible exception being Sinister, I think that is why horror is so weak currently as nearly every horror released is yet another ghost film.

@United Hobbit Have you seen The Wickerman (1973)?
I dont believe I have I think I've possibly seen the remake(?) But not the original is it chilling?
I tried watching the Friday 13th originals as everyone raves about 80's horror but couldn't get into them.

I think masks seem to be a common trend for what I find scary looking at those films I've listed.

Just stumbled upon this thread and not read it in entirety but would add this film as it seems to get very little mentions. It was a remake from a German film I think but it is as creepy as hell.

It's more creepy than anything. You know something is wrong, but what? Slow burner with some glorious performances (Cristopher Lee specially).

No random idiotic or stupid decisions by characters to make the plot work, so you might enjoy it.

I've been ranting about this director for a few years now. Best horror director i've seen in years, though they're not very traditional.
The Endless is the easiest to sell people on, its just a great, creepy, interesting movie. Its kind of a sequel to Resolution which is quite low budget, indie type deal but you dont need to watch it to enjoy the endless. Its just a couple of easter eggs really. You'd probably enjoy Resolution more if you watched it before the endless though and its very good too.
Spring is more of a romance with horror elements to make it weird and pretty funny. His newest movie After Midnight wasn't great and i'd skip.

Borderlands is just about the only horror film that has scared me in any way for as long as I can remember. The ending still haunts me.

I found Hereditary to be the last scariest film I've seen. Loved it.

This very moment to be honest

(Martyrs is great)
I’ve heard about Martyrs. It’s more a shock/ sadistic type movie rather than horror isn’t it?

Has anyone seen the Platform? It’s on Netflix. Again not really a horror but still very unsettling

Was gonna mention sinister to you till I read the last paragraph, one of the scariest films I've seen. Don't even understand why either. You know what's coming but still get the jump scares  it's probably because you could imagine a killer videoing that kinda stuff and it looks pretty plausible too. Proper freaky film!

Not sure but I'd wager a movie. Guess a short series could be an option.

The original is still for me the scariest looking werewolves and best transformation in cinematic history.

Andy has wanted to do this remake for a long time so hopefully Netflix gives him free license.

They need to keep him away from the CGI department. That seems to be his biggest critic, and I completely agree.

CGI and horror movies shouldn't mix.

It’s brilliant

I also liked the directors next movie, Midsommer but I think reception was very mixed on that
I guess people were expecting something supernatural like hereditary and instead got an acid trip

I freaking love Sinister. The weird home videos, good acting, awesome (Boards Of Canada) sound track... It all came together to make something amazing. Shame the sequel was a joke.

Have skim read the whole thread and not seen any of thsee mentioned.

The first Saw was amazing but the franchise went stupid after a while.

90s horrors were cheesy but great fun

Candyman creeped me out. Tony Todd was awesomely

Inbred Texas Chainsaw kinda film but good.

Similar to Friday the 13th and played by the guy who played Jason Vorhees

Yeah, I didn't even finish sinister 2.

Thinking about it, a sinister type storyline with the old videos and stuff would make a great creepy Netflix type series.

I skipped it due to the endless wank fest when it was released.

Caught it on Netflix this week. Brilliant movie. Scary. But it’s a proper movie. Builds constantly and really sticks the landing, which is often the let down with horror movies.

Loved it.

I think the new Invisible Man was quite good. You're always looking around the screen in case he's there.

Kinda like arsenal fans when Ozil is playing.

While not strictly horror (although could make an argument for body horror), I watched Eraserhead the other day. That was an experience.

Exactly. For me personally, I can think of...

Psycho
Rosemary's Baby
The Shining
Halloween
Ringu
The Others
The Descent
The Orphanage
Silence of The Lambs
Paranormal Activity (absolutely shat myself seeing this at the cinema)

Some of those I watched really young though, they probably wouldn't affect me now.
Gonna show my age and admit I've seen everything on this list except the last one. Really like everything on this list. What are the best horror films in this vein in the last 5-6 years? I saw Babadook which is a fine film but not that scary. Some of the movies listed above in this thread like Saw, Wrong Turn and the modern Hills Have Eyes are also fun/ exciting films but not scary IMO. Scream and Drag me to Hell are both good horrors because although there are lots of laughs to be had, they scare you when they want to.

Going to give the Wicker Man a go later, glad there are no stupid characters making stupid decisions

@Fingered Mouse, any chance you could provide a link to Borderlands on IMDB? I've tried searching it but it only comes up with the game the closest I've found is Borderland?

I didnt enjoy Heredity surprisingly as known its highly rated on here I think the fact I got a bit lost with what was happening didnt help

Yeah agree Sinister was good. That lawnmower (shudder) however I was very disappointed by the 2and

I've enjoyed Hills Have Eyes and the Descent and the Wrong Turn Films though the wrong Turn characters were stupid people making stupid decisions

I will check out Platform. Martyrs does have shock elements but it is the only film I have seen that still makes me uncomfortable when I think about it. It is definitely horror in my opinion. It has a similar feel as The Wailing I think in discomfort
