Eduardo Camavinga / signs for Real Madrid

He definitely could, however not as midfield two I don't think. You'd probably want a more pure DM with them.
Camavinga is a pure DM, he's just very technically gifted as well. He picked up the most successful tackles out of any midfielder in Europe last season.

I know the stats. But I don't think that tells the full story. I also don't expect that to necessarily be consistently true for him going forward. Will be much more in the deep play making role. He'll still pick up tackles and interceptions there, if course. Having seen him live in person, his positioning is excellent.

A diamond with them and Bruno at the top with Martial/Greenwood would be interesting, but we would need full-backs who continually provide width and good crosses, which we don't currently possess.
Yeah that would take a lot work to make that feasible for us. Doubtful we go that way.

Playing him as a pure DM would be wasting his talents. He has so much to give going forward as a #8 and must be allowed freedom to express himself. A pure DM next to him and another midfielder in a 4-3-3 would be the way forward IMO.

Agreed.

agreed.

If we were to ever go for this guy now would have been the best time, we almost had a free run at him. Rennes making the CL has changed everything on that front though. I’m sure he won’t want to move just yet and beyond next season he’ll probably get that move to Madrid.

Him staying at Rennes is actually a good move on his part because he's still so young and his club have got a very interesting project going on.

But I'm sure we'll be in for him that I have no doubt about. He may choose to go somewhere else but for us the there will always be good players to buy because we're prepared to invest. We just have to spend the money on the right profile of player.

We have no problems making signings for the academy but lots of those players are random punts who ran their contracts down and most likely won’t make it here. it does seem like we struggle to identify and bring in the best players from 18-22 from around the world. When it works out they are the best value transfers for the club overall. DDG Martial AWB Shaw and plenty from Fergie’s days. We’ve obviously tried with Memphis who didn’t work out but he could have made it as a good squad player here If his attitude was right.I think at that stage we were just signing random players anyway.

Edit- I do worry about the scouting and transfer team here. I don’t know if it’s the scouting is actually off or the owners don’t listen to the scouts or always want the cheaper player (but on totally insane wages?) who inevitably flop.

Agree, good at signing players 3/4 years away which means no guarantees, or spending a fortune on players who have started proving themselves over a short period of time. We havent made a great up and coming European signing for quite some time though. Personally never got the hype over Depay before we signed him or this season, is a decent player, not much more though.

As for Camavinga, I do think we can play him as a pure DM. Though I agree isnt fully makign the most of his attributes, its not like he has to just sit back the whole time, the way we play an daim to play he still should hav eplenty of opportunities to move forwards, especially in games we dominate possesion, see it from Matic now.

He look sout of the question though, probably sensible to stay another year at his age. Same token if there have been big enquiries from the likes of Madrid, us and Bayern as some reports suggest........you dont turn those down. Wonder whether it is fear of not being ready or such self confidence he is sure the moves still be available when he feels ready

Our problem since Fergie retired is that our scouts and management aren't on the same page with the club following the managers direction when it came to recruitment which got us in the mess we found ourselves in.

When managers are buying players for their philosophy rather than the clubs philosophy, you ufortunately end up in a pretty bad predicament with alot of money wasted.

We've been linked to him a couple of weeks before. Hope we can convince him to snub Real next summer:drool:

Its about where Camavinga would fit it
I agree with @Adnan that he should play as an 8 with a another player holding.

However if Pogba is pushed up then where would that leave Bruno Fernandes? I prefer him as the more attacking 8/10 than Pogba personal opinion

So if we signed Camavinga for me it should be to replace or rotate with Pogba

Or if we keep Pogba then we really dont have space for Camavinga and should be looking at a proper 6 instead

Further back playing deep.

Opinions are opinions but there is a reason some are scorned and others embraced especially when they are other worldly like that one. They are players that rotate and they are others that are far too good to do so, Fernandes is the former and Paul is the latter.

In any case french players don't often come here and I cannot see that changing anytime soon. Camavinga will go to PSG or Real Madrid.

Cantona, Blanc, Silvestre, Saha, Evra, Martial, Pogba, Mejbri..

How does he compare to that Lyon lad, Maxence Caqueret?
They are similar in many aspects, they have a great reading of the game both on offense and defense and the ability to make great passes. They both have a huge engine but Caqueret's stamina and activity is off the charts. Camavinga is the better technical player by far, he's a much better dribbler. I think, as much as it pains me to say as a FC Nantes fan, that he has as high of a ceiling as you can get. Which is not a knock on Caqueret who's been amazing in his short time as a pro.

Merci for the response mate.

I had never heard of Caqueret until the knockout rounds but he was very impressive. Unfortunately he seems like an 8 and not really what we need.

Barthez, Schneiderlin, Bellion, Obertan

Again they do not often come here, one every three or four years is not often.

I see less coming in the future as well once Anthony and Paul have left.

There are other club names on the tongues of people in France these days.

You're welcome mate. Caqueret has only played like a dozen professional games so I don't think he's leaving Lyon for a couple years but I think he's mostly a 6 (that's just based on the 8 or so games I've seen of him, maybe there are Lyon fans around who can be more accurate). He's been slotted in that Lyon starting 11 because they had a gap to fill in that midfield alongside Aouar and Guimaraes and he must have impressed in training. And since Guimaraes has been excellent in that DLP/DM hybrid role in front of the defence, Caqueret is playing as an 8 because of it. I think he has the ability to play in any position of a 4-3-3 midfield. It's still early in his career but I've been impressed every time I've seen him play.

Yeah I was impressed as well. He is quick and tenacious, but held his own in the late knockout rounds of the champions league as a 20 year old.

So, yes, lets spend the Sancho money on him! And while we're at it, lets get Camavinga as well. He looks decent.

First call-up with French national team.

Well deserved, should follow in Matuidi's footsteps as France's great midfielder of Angolan-Congolese descent.

The fact that Pogba and Ndombele are out because of covid and that his coach is the son of Deschamps's assistant played a big part in that call up

Dont think it's deserved though there's no way he was better than JRA over the last season, still way too raw, his performances would be looked upon very differently if these were those of a 20+ year old

I wouldn't count him, as only came for a final pay day he couldn't get elsewhere, as remember he turned us down when Bruce left and again when Pally left and that's the last type of player we need here now.

Do they play the same role? Have to say I haven't caught much of him this season.

No but Kante and Nzonzi both already covers the defensive position, JRA is more offensive than Camavinga for sure and with Pogba out there's only Aouar in this squad that really has real quality going forward.

All I know of him is he had that standout performance vs PSG at 16. Has he kicked on?

Camavinga is not really competing with JRA for a spot. If JRA was in the squad he'd be in the forwards section just like Aouar (even though they're not really forwards but you know what I mean). The fact that's he's coming back from a big injury also played a part.

Zidane wants him at Madrid and he is not expensive for them like Pogba. So I guess he will choose them over all other teams

I agree that that's the most likely destination. However, if we actually shift from being dysfunctional and recruit VDB, Upamecano and Sancho (I know, very hard to believe) then the team we'd be moulding would be the most exciting group of young players in Europe. Slotting into that team alongside Pogba would probably be a quite tasty prospect.
