Unless you are Mourinho's auntie how would you know why he made him captain? Funny Ole was talking about Paul being captain as well.

No one wants Paul to dearly get the captaincy back any more than you dearly want Maguire to keep it without merit.

If any of Paul, Marcus Rashford or De Gea takes it off Maguire that would be fitting.

No player should get the armband when he is new. Does more harm than good.

You follow up the word rubbish with a sentence full of it.
Ok you can continue your childish talk with someone else. Cheers.

Very often, captains are chosen because of particular leadership skills, attitude and influence on the team spirit. You see, many of us felt that prior to Harry Maguire’s arrival, there seemed to be a dearth of players at the club with those qualities. You may believe Ashley Young was made captain because of his Nationality, but for most who followed the club, it was clear that even with a lack of quality, he had a kind of attitude that was found lacking in the regular starters for various reasons.

Ashley Young was a terrible captain for us so i don't know what qualities you speak of. He was regularly our worst player and was quick to blame others. He might have been popular in the dressing room though so maybe thats the influence you speak of. I don't believe it's only nationality, but i think it plays a part.

I don’t know who you felt was a prime candidate for that role last summer. Pogba had been tried, but his refusal to commit to the club made him a bad candidate. There’s also the issue that he seems to have a hard time rising above himself when the going gets tough. De Gea was tried, but I don’t think anyone ever felt he was a good candidate, as leadership and command is one of his few relative weaknesses. Matic was a shout, but at the time he seemed fifth choice in midfield, and on merit too. Lindelöf you might suggest, but to me seems like he needs security rather than excuding so far. Many are young, of course. Rashford was also an option, in spite of being very young, because of his attitude, ambition, social awareness and confidence to always try. He was English, so it might surprise you that he wasn’t chosen. To me it makes sense, though. At his age, he should be allowed to focus on developing his own play for a few more years I think. Luke Shaw? Fred? Martial? I don’t think so. McTominay, Wan Bissaka or Bailly? No. Dan James or Mason Greenwood? Come on!

Pogba is twice the leader and player Maguire will ever be and yes for the record i'd have him as captain of man united any day of the week. De gea has seniority and titles over maguire as well having been world class. When you say leadership and command what exactly do you mean? Is the fact that Maguire is generally fawned over by the English football press a factor in his good leadership? Is his decent defensive heading what makes him commanding? Please be specific what what Maguire offers as a captain and avoid using vague phrases like leadership and command.

I think it was quite clear why so many at the time were screaming about lack of natural leadership skills, and as Maguire for some reason or other was renowned for showing suchlike at every team he had been in. You would be surprised, some even suggested that we spend 10m£ extra on him just for those skills, and others advocated making him captain upon entering Carrington. That didn’t happen, Solskjær waited until the 17th of January, at which point I think everyone inside the club seemed to think he was the only natural candidate. Up until then, he had shared vice captaincy with De Gea, Matic, Rashford, Tuanzebe (!) and Jesse Lingard (!!). I guess you could say he earned it, and that it wasn’t difficult to earn neither. And if you think De Gea, Matic or Pogba were natural candidates at the time, overlooked because of their nationalities, I can’t help you with that.

We did not have many characters in the team, i've already admitted that but you're gonna have to tell me these magical qualities that are worth 10 million pounds apparently.

A couple of mates had a similar issue in Riga... were marched to a cash point and made to draw out all their money at knife point. They bumped into another lad on the flight home who found himself in a similar situation but said he didn't have any money to give them.... they beat him up till he literally shit himself. His face was a mess, he was bruised all over and had a broken leg.
The advice we were given by the receptionist at the bar was avoid all bars with doormen. If there is a doorman, keep walking. When we got back to the hotel after our 'scare' I showed her a business card that one of these mobsters had shoved into my chest. She looked at us and said "you met him? This guy? You are luck you are not disappeared". Not gonna lie, I couldn't relax the rest of the holiday. We pretty much stayed drinking in the hotel.

If they were Albanian gangsters then they would want them arrested and deported. Albania is not in the EU so it makes such a thing an easy thing to do. Whatever happens the police wouldn't want to mess up with a celebrity who can bring the spot light on them.
In theory yes but in practice no. Maguire won't threaten their families :)

I've held off commenting on this before the details came out but fecking hell this went from lads on a piss to human trafficking and police corruption real quick.

A friend of mine went to Greece, got racially abused and got pickpocketed. Place sounds like a real shithole.
The economic and financial crisis made things worse for everyone over there.

As to the case itself i have not and will not be following it closely. I will just add a few notes to help the discussion be a bit more productive hopefully:

1)There is a lot of bias in media and the english gutter press have a particular style of shit they usually stick to. I would avoid treating what they say as fact as mcuh as possible and use your own critical thinking.

2) I cannot speak about Greece particularly but there are many countries ( especially tourist traps) that have corrupt law enforcement and gangs and such operating in the area. Where there are drugs, hookers, gambling there will usually be a mob/gangster presence

3) Maguire is our player and captain so like him or not united fans want the best result for him which is no punishment and having his head clear to focus on football. Having said that guilty or not this is a bad look for a united player let alone the captain and some internal punishment might be necessary.

You've cut me deeply mate.

Only a kid would make up a story as to why Mourinho gave Paul the armband in the first place rather than he was the best man for the job.

Anyway this is besides the point Maguire should have the captaincy taken off him, end of.

I would think the club and Maguire would tell Southgate it's not a good idea.
Probably. I would not have had either United or City players in as behind in pre-season due to extra time off. If one of those players gets injured there will be hell to pay.

Some years ago a friend of mine was victim of one of those "clubs" in Athens.

He went in, bought a drink.for a girl and the bill was around 700 dollars.

He didn't have the money on him, so they kept his friend as hostage until he found an ATM to get the cash.

He was warned not to tell police because they had friends over there.

So if not guilty then his sister has been attacked and he’s been abused and assaulted by police but the club should punish him? On what basis?

You should have kept track of the story back then but I cause you love Pogba so much you have tunnel vision. Yeah Maguire shoudnt have his captaincy taken of him and guy who is always with one leg out of the club certainly shouldn't be a captain and that's right I mean your favorite player.

I think Pogba is a great motivator, and that it helps he has his achievements (trophies) and skill to back him up if he's making a rousing pre-game or halftime speech. He is a leader in this sense.

But on the field is a different thing. We want him to be trying spectacular passes and moments of brilliance. But he can't be chewing out someone for losing focus if Paul just lost the ball a few times not long ago.
Agree with you, yes. Pogba is fine for a one off rousing speech. He's the perfect lieutenant, never a captain.

Called up Mason and Marcus too. And the City lads. Absolutely ridiculous. Why are there even internationals now anyway? The fixture schedule is insane enough as it is.
Think the problem has arisen because the start of the league seasons everywhere have been pushed back. These internationals are similar to what happened last season.

Not guilty does not mean his side of the story is 100% correct btw. If the club feel their reputation or financial interests have taken a hit they have every right to take some measures. I'm not saying flog the guy in public but something in between a week or two of wages or a you don't get to travel abroad without one of our security people with you seems reasonable.

Mason and Marcus is in the squad as well.
I can understand Mason. Rashford being included doesn't make sense because he is playing so badly. I'm not sure what Rashford needs, rest or more playing to get out of his rut the past 2 months.

Harold Maguire was a great player but a difficult personality
He clashed with the Greek authorities because Albanian gangsters shanked his sister
Tough personality? He still won plenty of quarter finals.

Deepthroating information to Howard Nurse.

I get they were always scheduled but I’d be calling for them to be cancelled. The scheduling is already mad for the next two years without adding pointless international games on top. Not sure international footy is a great idea during a global pandemic either. Ultimately money talks though I guess. Our lads can use it to get match fit I suppose.

Friendlies used to be entirely pointless, but to make it more interesting for fans to follow they made Nations League the "Europa League-lite" for EC/WC qualifier.

Ah this again.... More complete rubbish I'm afraid. Maguire is twice the leader Pogba will ever be. Pogba, while a clearly superior player, is never a natural leader of a team.
Is that the same leader with 4 relegations on his CV?

Twice the leader

In these circumstances i never understand why people don't call their embassy, especially if British or American or from another big country. These rackets operate on a local basis and usually soon change their tune if higher government comes knocking. Travelling around dodgier parts of the world that's always been the advice I've been given, if you get in trouble the embassy should be the first call you make.

I'm sorry, there is no way Maguire has said "I am the leader of Manchester United.”
Im sure what the police officer said he said is that he is the captain of Manchester United. Probably just badly translated from Greek.

True but you cannot assume a fair trial when some document related to the evidence were given to defence a couple of hours before.
And why all the hurry?

I suspect that the Greeks want to cover this up as fast as possible due to bad publicity and at the same time they don't want the police to be seen under bad light.
Quite the norm in these types of cases when you're not high profile, try having a duty solicitor in the UK after a punch up on a night out...
Still I do agree its shoddy work, my main point was regarding the complaints about language

Are you on a wind up?

How did that story have anything to do with drunk brits?

These scams are very well known in these countries. There is a reason respective mafia happen to be set up around bars/tourist spots.

I've had a mate kidnapped in Russia and left with no clothes in the middle of nowhere on a footy trip.
