Why? Smalling wasn't in the squad for us last season so unless we sell another CB then I doubt it.
Because only Maguire and Lindelöf can be relied on to stay fit. Last season we got lucky that both were so durable.

Seems to have been a busy day for the club. DVDB formally done, Romero getting heavily linked to Villa and Smalling close to Roma all in one day.

Did some crazed, starved muppet break into the London office and set the clocks in Woodys office to 5th October?

Do you not think we might just wait a year and pay Upamecano release clause instead, even though that it is putting immense pressure on the young shoulders of Axel & Teden.
Doubt it puts much pressure at all on Mengi. It'll be Lindelof & Maguire with hopefully Bailly and Tuanzebe as cover. Last chance saloon though for the latter 2 as they need to put their injury issues behind them. More hope for Tuanzebe than Bailly tbh but I'm doubtful of both.

We still have 6 CBs without Smalling. Maguire, Lindelof, Bailly, Tuanzebe, Jones & Rojo. I'm hopeful we can offload Rojo & Jones before bringing in a young CB but I doubt we'll find any suitors.

Jones is off to Newcastle supposedly. Rojo will be sold too. As will Romero. The decks are about to be cleared.
Those sales would be brilliant if true. I just worry we've backed ourselves into a corner with the high wages.

The issue with Rojo is he wants to play in Argentina. He almost joined Everton for 20m last year. He’d start for 70% of Prem teams.
I remember quite liking Rojo but it feels like he hasn't played in years. I imagine he's probably a shadow of his former self and our Rojo at left back experiment didn't do his reputation any favours.

Only other possibility is we go and get Badiashile/Torres as reckon they are our back up targets behind Dayot

Probably Badiashile more so than Torres. The rumoured 60m euro asking price of Torres would kill Sancho off and I doubt we'd swap Sancho for Torres. Interesting that we seemed to let Gabriel go in favour of pursuing Badiashile but Gabriel went for £21m and Monaco have said they'd require a Martial level bid to sell us Badiashile.

Deepthroating information to Howard Nurse.

I think it makes sense to just go with what we have, stick a 10m down payment on Dayot now and agree a deal giving the 35m next year in full too. Axel gets another year to develop with us, Dayot in the less pressured environment, RBL get an extra 10m and we guarantee we get Upemecano.

Because we've been linked with defenders all window by reputable sources, we also got unfathomably lucky neither of Maguire or Lindelof sustained any major injuries (they played 55 and 47 games respectively). Bailly, Tuanzebe and Jones spent nearly all season in the hospital. It's not even remotely sustainable for us to go another season like that.

That would be absolutely ideal if he and Bailly are able to stay fit for the majority of next season

I think the ceiling with Badiashile is much higher. He's younger, more of a physical specimen, ready to play now and in 4 years he might be the best center back in the world.

It would be amazing to get close to 25m for him. The previous owners didn’t even want to give 15m.
Yeah certainly would and opens up possibility of maybe getting a backup LB/ST if we can make enough after putting aside the necessary funds for Sancho

The other possibility is that we are really sold on Badiashile and are looking to bring him in now, despite what they say I don't believe it will take Martial money.

£25-30m for Smalling and Jones would be grand business in this market. Add on the rumoured £8m for Romero and sweet talk Moyes into taking Lingard and Pereira off our hands and we'll find ourselves with a nice kitty to work with.

Yeah imagine that, there's value in Europe and we shouldn't deal with English clubs. Wish we'd done the same for Maguire (as in looked abroad in the first place.)
Well Maguire is at least a good cb. Better than most of the rival defenders.
