Headscratching decision on his part if he ever had any ambitions of playing in Europe or being a 3 Lions fixture...

Villa priced him out of a move this summer after he helped them stay up and he rewards them by essentially handing over control of the remainder of his playing prime to them, truly don't get it but if it's what he wants then fair play to him and Villa fans.

I’d have quite liked him at United, but fair play sticking with his club. It’l be interesting to see how they get on this season.

That's him at Villa for life then, unless maybe if they get relegated. Fair play to him, just hope he doesn't regret it in a year or two like Zaha is right now with no way out. Grealish seems to genuinely love Villa though.

Very good deal for Aston Villa but for Grealish he better be prepared to stay there for atleast 4 years.

seems like he's a Villa man through and through, although in saying that I do think he would have come to us had we pursued it and his club didn't price him out out of a move. Good player, very good player in fact but in this climate he's not 80 million when you can get a quality player like Van De Beek for half that. He's still only 25 and if Villa don't improve in next couple of seasons he'd still be young enough to get a move if his form continues. Tim Sherwood was adamant this move was going to happen, maybe he's not as connected as he'd like to think he is :nono:

Would have been a good signing. But maybe like Le Tissier, He loves his club.

Did he actually have a buyout clause in his previous deal then?
Relegation clause possibly but no buy out, his price shot up once they avoided relegation. We can still sign him next summer once everyone figures out Pogba isn’t signing a new deal and will be going to Real on the cheap:p

Red Card for Casemiro!
I'm sure it has a lot to do with being priced out of a move, but Grealish could have waited it out if he was angling away as well.

It is heartwarming to see a boyhood fan stick to the club he loves and commit his future to them.

Great news that we are not signing this player. Overrated to the umpteenth degree for the money Villa wanted and besides we already have enough divers.

It seems he genuinely loves the club so fair play to him for signing a long term deal.

Disappointing but expected after buying van de Beek and him joining the England team, at least he didn't join any rivals.

Was always staying the second Villa survived because of the price tag they gave him and we were never going to pay that.

Well better he stays at Villa instead of adding to Liverpools/City or Chelseas team/squad.

If he doesn't have a reasonable buy out clause, chalk this up to another young player with a massive lack of ambition, shame really. Yes he loves the club, which is great, but its unlikely he will achieve anything at Villa throughout his entire career, except for nice wages

Personally very happy for the lad and the premier league in general. I dont think its healthy for the big clubs to hoover up all the talent and I like star players to be dotted throughout the league. I miss the days of Di Canio at West Ham, Okocha at Bolton, Le Tissier at Soton, Juninho at Middlesbrough. Great for the league like it would have been great for European football if De Light and De Jong had both stayed at Ajax. Nothing is permanent and its good to build a legacy somewhere (and helps if the owners can try to pay you your fair market value)

He will leave at the end of the season if they go down. Always an option if that happens. Don’t matter if he has a 5 year contract.

What is in it for the players who sign these long contracts that they can't escape?

Is it something to do with protecting themselves against a career ending injury to ensure they get a big pay off?

Fully agree. The talent being distributed is way better as opposed to City/United/Chelsea storming with money and buying lead players from other teams for their rotation role fillers. Mahrez was much more fun at Leicester.

I'd have loved him here. He fits my idea of a Utd player precisely: brave, talented, confident. Good luck to him.

Why blame Villa? Every clubs wants to hold their best player, including us. No one put a gun in his head to sign the contract, he got a big pay rise too as reward.

Under a tree.
He's going to have a lot of clauses in his contract for him to sign a 5 year deal, when he was considering leaving.
Will definitely have a relegation clause and won't be surprised of there a affordable release activated if they don't show rapid progress and finish in the top 10 and completing for a European place within the next two years with money they have been spending

As others have said, it feels very much like Zaha's situation.

Too good for the club he's at. Not quite good enough for anyone to pay the premium that comes with him being the homegrown hero.

Just brilliant. Better than Bruno and Donny, imo.
