Was a fan of Cavani when he was at Napoli. That's a long time ago though.

There is one issue with Cavani while he is supposed to be very nice, he is also supposed to be a loner which apparently did help when players that take a lot of room like Neymar and Mbappé appeared.
Stoic with a kind heart and wonderful hair. What's not to love

Am very happy with this in isolation. Am not appeased overall in terms of the transfer window though.

Cavani as another attacker is good business. He is on a free and 2 year contract. Telles and another RW and we are good to go IMO. Get rid of Smalling and another player as well (Rojo, Mensah...), great.

This is actually a really good signing for us. He can also play on the right flank. But the main thing is, if we cant trust martial yet to get 30 goals a season on his own, signing cavani puts less pressure on him and the rest of the front 3.

Greenwood gets that mentor and breathing room to develop without too much pressure. We also reduce our spending and allows us to get sancho next season rather than get dembele for 60m

I watch
His agent has been almost begging teams all summer.

There was a story from Tier 1 journalists less than a week ago that Cavani was 'anxious' that he was still a free agent and nobody had taken the bait.

For anyone who watched PSG last season, this is a comedy deal. He's much, much, much more 'finished' than Alexis ever was for us in terms of his pace, movement, stamina and ability to stay fit. For a player who relied so much on his physicality and non-stop running it's just a non-starter - or should have been.
I watch PSG most weeks if only the highlights. His legs have gone and his body is giving up.

4 goals? League 1 is really not the strongest, Zlatan was knocking them in for fun at the same age, while Cavani struggles to get up after a challenge. He’s only played about 30 games in 2 seasons due to injury.

2014? I’d have been delighted. Now? What on earth are we doing.

Or they're taking it for what it is, another striker option in a squad bare thin of quality forwards and not just automatically presuming he'll be another high profile flop that was brought in to lead our attack when he won't be first choice.
Who on earth thinks he's being brought in to lead our attack? Absolutely no one. He's a massive upgrade on Ighalo. I hope he can stay fit, I doubt it, but if he ends up being the end of our business its all a bit tragic to me.

Again, does he play/train for free? No sign-on bonus? No agent fee?

How "free" was Sanchez?

You're countering your own argument there. Alexis Sanchez was brought in to be a key player for the team, an automatic starter with the highest wages in the league. Alexis Sanchez also wasn't "free", it was a swap deal with Mkhitaryan, unless you wanna tell me now that Mkhitaryan had zero value. In contrast, Cavani is not on sky high wages, and he is being brought in as a backup (and replacement for Ighalo who leaves in January). I don't know what some of you want, do you not want us to have a decent backup option? Someone who is proven better than Ighalo?

It’s getting him on the pitch, mate. It’s the Jack Wilshere Paradox. You’re not better than me, if you can’t stay fit.
Absolutely, but he’s not coming in as a star signing to be relied upon. He’s coming in as a back up option, to replace Ighalo and I can’t see the issue with that. Good squad management that was so severely lacking last early season and had us in all sorts of a mess for months.

What is wrong with some of you? He's coming to replace Ighalo as a backup striker, and if he's fit, he's a huge upgrade on Ighalo. You guys are acting like he's coming in to be an automatic starter here, when in reality, he's a depth signing. He makes the squad better, provided he's fit.
He's gonna be on 200k/week easily, if not more.

Surprised at the reaction to this. Ighalo served his purpose of making sure Martial didn't have to play but you can't bring him on chasing a goal.

Some positives to a signing I don't like:

- has the best off the ball movement in the game alongside C.Ronaldo.
- works like his life depends on it for his team.
- makes his own chances constantly. (Fluffs them as well)
- is both a front and back post striker - he'll be in position for tap-ins or flash crosses across the box.
- can head a ball.
- can play across all forward positions.
- syncs with midfielders well and makes runs in accordance with what they can provide.
- Greenwood and Martial should learn a hell of lot from him.

The negatives are:

- he's not close to the peak player he was now.
- has lost a step.
- If we're claiming poverty, you don't bring in someone like him with the wage and signing fees he'll get.
- Martial doesn't like competition for his spot.

The last one is on Martial, of course, but in terms of harmony, there's a potentially upset player to contend with.

The signing isn't a good one, for me, but if it's going through, might as well be objective about it rather than emotional or irrational.

i'm normally rather upbeat on here but this deal is just depressing me.

Complete and utter panic buy and I worry this is just a desperation move to at least bring someone in before the window closes.

I seriously seriously doubt Ole told Woodward at the start of the summer I want Cavani.

Err... not free at all?

He was swapped for Mkhitaryan in a deal valued at around £30 million.

It's as if some have never heard the expression "people in glass houses shouldn't throw green smileys".

Does seem like a last resort signing with Ighalo also in your squad. Top striker though, gives you a different option.

2 centre backs and a backup/replacement for Matic, probably someone to challenge rashford, backup to our new right wing then yeah we are good for challenging.

We need depth and expierence upfront. This is a good temporary signing. Better than Ighalo, can put presure on Martial and offer something else to what we got.

Telles and Sancho now and this is a good window!

Goes against the type of player he's been buying and what he's been saying. When the signing is announced, he'll say he's happy but with what went on with Sanchez and his comments there, and not going for Bale for the wages and everything, I really can't see that Ole has pushed for it. Definitely the sign of a desperate board (read: Ed and Matt) who realised that not bringing anyone else other than VDB isn't going to look great, so have done this to try and get some appeasement.
100% bang on. Anyone who thinks this is an Old signing is mistaken. This is all Woodward, you can smell it

Free transfer. Good for squad depth. Right wing and CB are still the more pressing issues.
Not going to happen this window at least.

Players in squad that would have to be registered:
  1. David De Gea
  2. Victor Lindelof
  3. Eric Bailly
  4. Phil Jones
  5. Harry Maguire
  6. Paul Pogba
  7. Juan Mata
  8. Anthony Martial
  9. Marcus Rashford
  10. Chris Smalling
  11. Lee Grant
  12. Jesse Lingard
  13. Marcos Rojo
  14. Fred
  15. Bruno Fernandes
  16. Daniel James
  17. Sergio Romero
  18. Luke Shaw
  19. Timothy Fosu-Mensah
  20. Odion Ighalo
  21. Dean Henderson
  22. Aaron Wan-Bissaka
  23. Nemanja Matic
  24. Donny van de Beek
  25. Axel Tuanzebe
  26. Scott McTominay
Those who don't:
  1. Mason Greenwood
  2. Diogo Dalot
  3. Brandon Williams
  4. Teden Mengi
add Edinson Cavani and that makes 27 that needs to be registered. Smalling is the only player that needs to be registered that has remotely been solidly linked with a move away. To sign a RW or CB after Cavani, we would need to get rid of at least three players by Monday deadline - not going to happen.

Why we offered ighalo new contract then if we were to sign another striker?

People here talking like Cavani is in him prime is who we are signing.

He's 33, 34 in February and has been injured the majority of last season and season before.

He scored four goals last season. This is a panic buy which and shows Woodward as this best.

He'll give us that major aerial presence we lack which we will need for certain games. Then Martial can come in whense are playing teams with a slow center back who we can rip apart with pace. Cavani could be huge for us.

Is it just me that feel this tranfer is kinda good for us? He is if a proven topscorer and really humble person with great mindset on the field.

He can change the games for us just with his playstyle. mby we even can get some headers now :devil::devil:

He is an Ed signing. So underwhelming and shows the kind of players we are able to attract

Romero and Rojo will be gone at least. We wont sign a CB though. Lingard could also be going too
