Rashford and Martial both had great seasons despite injury lay-offs?
They did have great seasons but they both struggled hugely when the other was out, and they played as a solo striker with no support striker. It seems unlikely Greenwood can help with that as he's a moments player right now, and Ighalo's the worst striker we've had in a long while. Even if it's just to remove the burden and pressure that Rashford in particular struggled with as a #9, that's very valuable.

Are people for real in this thread? Cavani would be an excellent short term upgrade over Ighalo and allows us to focus on other areas for now. He gives us a different dimension to Martial and both Martial and Greenwood could learn lots from him. He's not being bought to be a long term starter, he's being bought to be a backup to Martial, and an fantastic one at that not to mention on a free transfer. Goodness me, the negativity..
Issue is:
Cavani has been free all summer. Why wait till now?
Huge wages. Do we not learn from the Sanchez deal?
With none of our top targets on board - this reeks of a panic buy

If Cavani is our only attacking incoming that is truly an abysmal transfer window. We are paying Cavani & Ighalo a fortune to sit on the bench

Clearly not the first choice option.

It's a loan deal and we won't need to worry about getting rid of him. If he is crap, don't trigger option for the 2nd year. Also, wages are nowhere near Sanchez ridiculous levels. Reported wages for Cavani are decent.

I'm going to be even more cynical and say that this is not a panic buy. I say Woody never intended to spend any money on Sancho and just wanted to get the cheaper things done (VdB, Telles, Cavani).

Woody has wanted Cavani for years, I swear I remember rumours of us signing him every season since SAF retired.

I personally think it's wrong but we will never know. I think we expected to get a decent amount of money in from selling deadwood which would have a added a fair bit of money to Sancho deal for example. Since it didn't happen, I don't think we can afford spending £150m especially during pandemic.

To be frank, Cavani as a squad option is miles better than Ighalo, it adds depth and quality. If Giroud works for Chelsea, why shouldn’t Edinson for us?

Some people really need to get a bit of context on this deal for Cavani. He's at exactly the right age where he won't stop the development of Greenwood, Rashford and Martial. If anything they can learn from him. He's on a free albeit with relatively high wages.

People say it stinks of desperation. I'd wager he's not being brought in to fill the RW role that's for sure. If the deal for Sancho and or Telles had been completed, I doubt there would have been too many shits given about the Cavani deal. Its a position we needed more quality in depth and its been addressed. Cold light of day with the age of players at the club and Cavani pedigree, its not as bad a deal as a lot are making out.
I don't mind this signing in the context of other arrivals.

If this is it then the deal makers are rightly getting pelted.

If he does as well as Giroud has for Chelsea, we're golden.

Apparently, rumors say it is so that we can squeeze the salary and agent demands down. Don't know if true.
Apparently, we did learn, because the club seems to have managed to lower the demands of the player/agent. One of the tweets claims agent acknowledged the demands were lowered. Hence the 200K and within wage structure rumors.
With all other transfers in context, yeah it does look like a panic buy. But whether or not it is a panic buy, I don't think it is a shit deal. I think it is actually reasonable, with assumptions in place.

I think that is the plan. As another forumer posted.

First 11 is roughly the same. Bench/squad is slightly stronger.

Hopefully we get Telles as well, since Dalot is leaving and Telles seems a good fit in terms of qualities. That would give us more depth and options compared to last season for rotation.

Declined over 2 years does not mean it happened in 1 day exactly 2 years ago. His issues with injury started July 2018 and he has missed a lot of games since. Are you saying he’s as good now as he was in 2017/18? If so why did PSG replace him and let him go?
I'm not saying that and PSG replaced him because he didn't wanna extend his contract and play second fiddle to Icardi specially who used his injury to score goals and become their more regular 9. Cavani is past his prime but it's better for us to have him than to have no one as another striker. Martial cannot score consistently yet even if he's improved a lot at that aspect, Cavani can help in that regards hopefully.
A lot of fans are angry and it's understandable given the context, we're being managed woefully at the top. Besides Cavani earning his place as the regular 9 won't surprise tbh or Martial using his presence to become better. Either way, it benefits the club

Cavani might turn out to be a good signing but it's not really the point .
We badly need a CB a LB a RW as well as a striker .
I think we will sign Telles and that young Uruguayan RW .
If these guys were our intended targets all year then why not have the deals done weeks ago so we have a settled squad .
I'm guessing none of them where initially our targets and became so because we are so so bad at trying to get the main deals done .

The one good thing to come from this window is that more and more United fans are coming over to the dark side and realising that we won't ever win a title while the Glazers own the club and while Woodward is running it for them

We needed a backup striker that would not harm the progress of martial and greenwood.

We managed to sign someone who has scored over 400 goals in his career. We can all point to his injuries, but he is injury free right now and once match fit can provide competition and leadership to our team.

As a squad player he will improve the depth of our team in what will be a crazy season

Cavani would've been a useful addition if we'd managed to improve in our most needed positions, i.e. RW and probably LB.

But we haven't, so signing Cavani to try cover that up is a slap in the face. He's probably going to be of some use to us, but it does nothing for the big problems in our side.

I genuinely think we'll struggle to make 4, with the way teams like Everton and Leeds are playing, and a few of the smaller teams like Villa and Brighton having improved as well. We needed to improve the first XI but all we've done is added subs-depth.

feck United. We’re done as a football club.

This is worse than Valencia, Owen, Obertan.

Anyone that is unopposed to Glazers may as well be supportive of them. And if you are, I wish you die slow.
In hindsight, finishing that bottle was probably not the best idea.

Clearly Cavani was not in our plans otherwise we probably would have snapped him up earlier; however I wouldn't call this a panic buy per say.
Its obvious, and has been obvious for some time tha,t Ed and Matt are incompetent when it comes to transfer dealings, but am Ok with this signing. We look highly unlikely to get our targets this summer, but it is also obvious we do need reinforcements in the squad for now and the future, this takes care of the now need(if it pans out).
This is more of reacting to the reality of where we are right now, which is that we are not going to get our targets. I think this is better than say spending a transfer fee on a signing like say a Josh King.
This is a short term solution (and i use the word solution loosely), where as we get have a go at trying for our long term targets again next window or summer.
It how I feel about the Sancho transfer "saga", if we not getting him this window, we shouldn't be trying to go sign a long term alternative as we really are not at that stage yet. We would be in the same situation we were at the start of the window, him being a Dortmund player, so we still can go for him again next summer, even though it would be tougher to get him. Which is probably the thinking behind trying to get Dembele on loan.
I think the Sancho situation is like the Ruud signing, although different circumstances that caused the deal not do go through, nothing had changed, so our plan for him didn't.
As Much as I have a lot of issues and frustrations with Ed and Matt, our incompetence in the market, this is one I have no issues with.

33 years old. Past his best. Huge wages and agent fees. How does this sound like a good idea?

We don’t even need a striker as much as we need to strengthen other areas!

We need a CDM more than anything a LB and a CB.

Ideally we should of got Thiago, Telles and any CB Lindelof is so out is depth.

Cavani at his peak is better than Ighalo. Cavani has done nothing for months now and has been left out of the world cup qualifer squad because of it

Uruguay's assistant coach Mario Rebollo said Friday there were concerns about Cavani's fitness as he had not played for several months.

"Beyond the fact that we all know the capacity that Edi has, this pandemic has interrupted his training regimen," said Rebollo.

How long are we going to be paying him 150-175k per week to not even be fit enough for our bench?

If we are signing that Uruguayan rw then I don't think we are going for Sancho this summer. We will probably keep James then. Should get a cb and lb in deadline day in that case but Woodward is probably going to do nothing.

Sounds as if this is going to get done. I've never been a huge fan - he won't be a Zlatan, but I don't think he'll be a Falcao or Sanchez either.

I do, however, quite like the idea of having an experienced head in the squad and he might be good for the younger players: I still think that we'd have benefited more if Zlatan had not got injured or had been offered a short deal when he recovered. And. of course, there won't be a fee - even Woodward can't bugger that part up!

If he gets 12-15 PL goals, I'd see that a a bonus. the squad at the moment isn't anywhere good enough to get top four

The fact that we are signing a 33 year old player with a terrible recent injury record that hasn`t played first team football for months on end in the last 2 days of a transfer window when he has been available for months and could actually be match fit now is what pisses me off. I personally don`t want him but that isn`t the issue , it is the fact that Manchester United are so badly organised the manner of this transfer just rams it home.

Who in their right mind buys a 33 year old (will be 34 in 4 months) who has been riddled with muscular injuries for best part of 12 months, who was made available all around Europe for 3 months and no one wanted him. Oh i know Ed will take him

Never seen so much anger over such a tiny thing. Cavani is a backup striker that we signed on a free transfer on a 1+1 deal. What is the big deal? He's low risk, cheap, and fills a role we needed. People need to realize we have many more issues than just a RW and as annoying as it is that we haven't filled it its not because we signed a feckin backup striker that we didn't get one.

Looks like he got Ed's one thought right. Let's not pretend that. Cavani is a striker who likes to get on the end of crosses, gets in the box, good job we have lots of good wingers who can put crosses in. Oh wait......

Problem is, the opportunity has been around for months and we haven't bothered doiong anything with it.

I don't think people have an issue with signing Cavani as part of a plan. It's the lack of one. Or at least the lack of implementing one. The main reason to believe in what's been happening with the club for the last near two years - Solskjaer and all that - is that plan, that "Cultural reboot" slogan that's been repeated over and over. Then we go and do something that appears to oppose that, so people lose belief.
Could there be a scenario where Cavani and his agent were asking for too much at the beginning of the window and now with no club agreeing to their terms, have now lowered their requests, making it more appealing to sign?

More or less agree with ya. It looks like the club can't get the main targets so is now just focusing on the squad depth. Hopefully it really does pan out.

Not sure what his fitness is, currently. But if it is really bad, probably about a month? But he's a known professional, so I'm hoping he'll do it in a month or less. Ighalo leaves in Jan, so we have almost 3 months to get Cavani up to speed. So no rush.

Sounds as if this is going to get done. I've never been a huge fan - he won't be a Zlatan, but I don't think he'll be a Falcao or Sanchez either.

I totally agree. Zlatan's experience and confidence propped the team up a lot. Once he got injured, the squad just deflated. Hopefully Cavani can have a similar positive influence. And if he can stay fit and chuck in double digit goals, that would be the icing.

I think whether the squad will challenge top four, will depend largely on fitness/luck with injuries and how well we manage our squad depth. It has improved with Cavani and Donnie joining. Hopefully Telles will join as well. If all that pans out, our bench is definitely getting stronger. Which would make a world of difference, as we saw how bad it was at the end of last season.
