Edinson Cavani - Manchester United Player

If Cavani comes in and scores goals, a lot of people have to apologise. The way we have treated the new signings in this window is appalling. We haven't even given them a chance yet, all because of Sancho. Well lets see how he performs too.

For me it has nothing at all to do with Sancho, as I mentally checked out of that transfer ages ago. It's just that this signing is completely underwhelming in every single possible regard.

Cavani offers a different option so I think he will be a success as long as we don't leave him isolate upfront. I know that he is being offered to many clubs and I think many clubs were put off by his wage demand and a longer deal. I would think that it is likely that he lower his wage demand since we are in the champions league and he will still be feature regularly so he has option next year as well. I think it is definitely an upgrade to Igaho.

He was my go-to signing on FM08. Was a nice addition to the Rooney, Tevez, Ronaldo attack.

Shame this is 2020, though. Another shirt sale signing.

Not sure I'm a fan of this transfer, but in the end it is rather low risk. We get another body up front, and he will likely take Ighalo's game time and I'm guessing he should be an upgrade there. What will also hopefully help, is he can pass on some of his experience to Greenwood and co.

If he ends up past it and rubbish, we can just leave him on the bench and let him go at the end of the year.

So this thread is where all the resident drama queens and armchair experts are currently camping in...

This is a discussion forum. If you don't like discussing, and prefer to circle-jerk, maybe this isn't the place for you.

Given That Ighalo is leaving in January, the signing itself is not a bad signing. Good player on a free transfer, on a 1 + 1 contract. I don't care about the shirt numbers. Not sure why people are worked up about that.

My problem with the signing is that we could have signed him up much earlier to let him settle in and begin training earlier rather than wait till now. He hasn't played or train in 7 months. It might be another month before he gets up to speed with his training and match fitness. This is seriously bad planning and decision making by the club.

Now that he is in, I hope he stays injury-free and becomes a great success!

Mate, in his last two seasons, he couldn't stay injury free in the low intensity Uber Eats league against shite opposition, with the majority of his injuries muscular. The Premier League is far, far more intense and physically demanding so it's only going to get worse for him - especially since he hasn't played a competitive football match in 7 months.

This! Give a man a chance.

Maybe if he is the Plan B (Fellaini-style) coming off the bench, it would be not too taxing. I am waiting for football clubs to go bust (apparently November is the time-frame if no fans are allowed in stadiums). We can then really buy on the cheap in January.

how about you let the lad have a bloody kick at the ball first? If you’re going to be a absolute drama queen over a signing, maybe football isn’t for you.

Sorry. My bad. Let's all have a little cuddle and remind ourselves that everything is top-top and a-ok at the club I have supported for 42 years.

Let me set something straight: I do not blame Cavani at all. Not in the slightest. He would have to be a proper idiot to not agree to join United; considering nobody else was out for him and he was contemplating retirement due to that fact. That is, until Ed came riding in and convinced him to join us at the very last minute, as a very last resort, after everything else went tits up.

I blame the absolute incompetence of the board and our horrendous transfer strategy.

Let me reiterate what I stated earlier:

I could go on and on about why this is a terrible signing by the club, but I think I've said it enough over these past few hours.

Football is football is football. Nothing is certain and let’s not get a into a panic attack just yet.

loving the fact that he has 2 arms and 2 legs though

How much for Telles to Cavani being our most common assist to goalscorer play?

How much for Telles to Cavani being our most common assist to goalscorer play?

Not much, considering Cavani won't even be up to speed for at least another month due to lacking any form of fitness. Also, Telles won't play as much as people think. He's poor defensively, and with our current defence an absolute fecking shambles, it's too risky to be leaving them even more exposed than they currently are.

With Martial out for 3 games, this has become a lot more critical than it needed to be. Hopefully he can get up to speed sooner rather than later and avoid injuries from being rushed back.

He's nowhere near ready for premier league football. He's not played a football match since March. We will end up shoving Rashford or Greenwood up top and James, Lingard, Mata or some shit on the outside till Martial returns.

Exactly. I won't fault the club for what seems a necessary, logical signing. A gamble yes, but we needed a short term striker anyways.

We can complain about the club's inadequacies elsewhere in more appropriate threads.

feck it. Im stoked to see Cavani in a United shirt. Cant blame the club's poor decisions and blame the guys coming in for it. If he can bring just a bit of that winner/seen it all mentality to the dressing room then that could be worth a lot, even now.

Just hope he s not coming for charity like we ve been plagued by in recent times, and legitimately wants to make an impact.

Telles is going to be no worse than Shaw defensively. People just saying he's bad defensively because he's Brazilian and knows how to cross. People have developed a weird opinion that a fullback is only either good in attack or defence, can't have both. Guarantee that Telles will be more important than Shaw.

A month is too long... Cavani will have 2 weeks now, and will be used off the bench for the first bit but with us playing 2 games a week, he'll be starting in no time.

Well I didn't like having the internationals right after getting trashed like that, but it may well be a blessing in disguise. Indications are that he is a professional and has been training eventhough he is clubless. We can only hope for the best. Maybe 3 - 4 weeks?

If one wanted Cavani there were many alternatices, Giroud was already available last season, just saying.

Neither of those players came to us after having 7 months off after an injury riddled campaign

He might start by then, if we're lucky, but he will nowhere near be up to the speed and intensity of the premier league. Do remember: prior to this, he was playing in the fecking Uber Eats league against dog shit opposition. Also, have you seen our upcoming fixtures for the point you say he might be able to play? It doesn't get any easier for him.

Yeah. Internationals is roughly 2 weeks. And I'm guessing by the 3rd week he will have either under 23s or substitution appearances, depending on his progression. It looks like he is also very professional and has been training on his own as well.

If one wanted Cavani there were many alternatices, Giroud was already available last season, just saying.
1) Giroud is older at 34
2) His goal scoring record is not as good as Cavani
3) Cavani is more all rounded with better technique. IINM, Ole prefers attackers with good technique

We needed a striker and to get Cavani on a free is very good. I'm very happy with this, don't get the meltdown.

I could go on and on about why this is a terrible signing by the club, but I think I've said it enough over these past few hours.

That injury record isn't even that bad. You need to calm yourself. A couple of hamstring and groin injuries? Martial's is probably very similar. What a bunch of crying.

This is Edison fecking Cavani. I hope I remember to quote this when he gets 15 goals for United.

We can complain about the club's inadequacies elsewhere in more appropriate threads.

Of course you can fault the club. The reason we're signing him at all is due to the clubs incompetence in their transfer dealings. He was a last second signing because everything else went tits up and he was the little safety net.

Now now, finance aside, the contract 1 + 1 is good.

Ighalo only have 3 months left and looking likely we won't extend it. We need depth.

If Cavani turns out to exceed expectation, we can just simply extend for one more year. He got a year to win himself an extension. If he don't then simply move him out along. Easy.

We needed a striker and to get Cavani on a free is very good. I'm very happy with this, don't get the meltdown.

Some of it I get it because he's a big name player not at his peak and fans have PTSD from falcao, bastion, Sanchez but this is different. He's here as a backup striker and on quite cheap.

Both Giroud and Cavani are not pace merchants, Griroud is proven in PL, Cavani would need time. All I am saying is this is a panic buy. Inghalo deal was renewed. If striker was a requirement, there was lot of time to get one.

Martial is our player already, and in his early twenties. We CHOSE to bring Cavani in, at 33 years old, and 7 months without football, knowing full well his injury record and the fact he was in the twilight of his career. Him and his agent must be high-fiving and slapping cocks right now that they've managed to pull this off, considering he was ready to call it a day as no one else wanted him on their books at the wage he was after.

for a free on 160k a week, they are high-fiving? Cavani who has earned millions is getting happy at one more year earning less than half of what he was? Give me a break. You really don't understand the class of Cavani. This is a great deal. Again, he's there as a backup/squad depth. He is costing us less than igahlo.

No. You complain at the other thread about the specific transfers that went tits up. Not here.

I don't know if the club planned to get Cavani anyways or if this was a plan C. I think it is, personally. But regardless, whether you like it or not, we always needed a short term striker. And Cavani can potentially fill in that gap.

160k vs. 0k as no one else wanted him. I'm no economic genius, but I think I know which option I'd take. Let's not forget the signing on fee they both received, eh.

Also, I do understand the class of Cavani. He was a great player, and I'd have been ecstatic 4-5 years ago. Just like I'd have been ecstatic at Schweinsteiger if we signed him 4-5 years earlier. But the reality is, they both came here when they are far past their best.
