You could have counted a UK general election, held another the next day and counted that too in the time since polls closed in the US
They probably count postal votes early here in the UK. Also i reckon we have far more counters per constituent.

The US is a piss take though. What I don’t understand is how Republicans can seemingly convince their dumb base of conspiracy when they demanded that all mail-in ballots get counted last.

Such a transparent ploy to manipulate the numbers on the night to show a republican victory, allowing them to cast doubt when the tables start turning (especially at a snails pace). Ironically the real conspiracy of this whole thing.

They do and yes you're absolutely right. The reason this is taking so long is because of the Repubican party in the first place.

People are going to end up dead because of the bile spewing from Trump and co at the moment.

Proper daft that they think a team from one of the involved parties should be allowed to just walk in and watch votes being counted  yeah because that’s completely unbiased.

I've actually googled to see if my off-the-cuff, stupid remark has any basis in reality because some spectre of a memory was bothering me, and true enough, there are no penguins native to Alaska, or indeed anywhere in the Northern hemisphere apart from the Galapagos penguin. I hope you all appreciate this information bomb.
Damn penguins coming all the way from Antarctica to take the jobs away from decent, hardworking Alaskans. Build that wall!

I would love to see Biden run, I love Bernie to bits but can’t help but think that he would get ripped to pieces by fake news campaigns.

Biden is just pure class and I think he’d have a calming, authorative influence over centrist swing voters.
@Pexbo was right :D

feck sake, cnn saying Clayton in Georgia are done for the night.
It's never going to end, is it?

The European Space Agency will lead the colonisation of the rest of the solar system. NASA can't take part because Georgia and Nevada will still be counting votes. The new colony on Mars will be called Count McCountingface, in honour of the brave heroes still counting.

You absolutely cannot blame the Dems.
One is a party who convinced itself the other's candidate was not born in America and was a Muslim terrorist.
The GOP has gone off the rails. I am biased like most are in this thread but this is an inescapable fact. The GOP is too far gone. There is a limit to how far a party must reach over. Biden has gone as far as any sane politician should.
Oh I agree. But not the point I was trying to make. What I was trying to say that it’s become so divided that it isn’t worth it to try and claim more votes from the other party because a) spending that time motivating your base is more fruitful (look at Trump’s vote count - he may have stolen a bit of vote from Biden but his increase in raw vote numbers comes from purely directing his approach and effort to his base). And b) ideology is so different that moving one way to get more votes would easily be offset by the votes you’d lose by disillusioning part of your base.

Point being, the lines between GOP and Democrat are firmly set and without a seismic change in the politics of both any time soon, all elections will likely be close and really down to who turned up - which has generally always been important in the US, but right now it almost feels like the only thing that’s important.

I bet you Nevada is waiting for Georgia to finish in favor of Biden, so that they can deliver the death blow themselves. They'll be like; Nevada Kedavra!!!

I just heard from an acquaintance in the US what he had to vote on. I couldn't remember everything. But apart from Presidency, Senate, Congress, State Senate, County parliament and dozens of local issue votes, there were also plenty of judges to elect and all kinds of people to lead little local agencies that would normally just be filled by the mayor or HR here. But my favorite was the "library commission". He did not mention the cleaning lady/guy at the town hall, but I am sure they have to be elected, too. No wonder this takes so long to count.

I think you’re right. And what makes it so strange is that the politics of the two parties is really not that much different. We’ve had the same thing in Ireland for generations. The two biggest parties have very similar policies, yet the split between the voters is incredibly tribal and passionate. Makes no sense at all when you take a step back from it.

Surely they operate in shifts though? I mean they were expecting this scenario, the idea that they haven't enough people for 3 x 8 hour shifts boggles the mind.
It’s almost as if Republican-run states are always gutted of fund for public services.

And we are in a pandemic, that put further restrictions on how many people can be in the same space, and the pool of volunteers to assist with the board of election employees.

Don’t really want to blow smoke up Murka’s arse but the way this is all so agonisingly prolonged makes the result seem more legitimate than if it was all over in 24 hours. They’re definitely giving the impression that every vote counts (and will be counted, no matter how long that takes)

Half the country is making the exact opposite argument right about now, spurred on by their cult hero, the president.
