Looks like Federer's first realistic chance at winning a Slam will be at Wimbledon then. Really hope Nadal can win one of RG/AO before that and finally get the Slam lead.

He's going to be the prohibitive favourite going into Roland Garros. I think there's a good chance he gets to 21 before Federer comes back in time for the grass court season.

Apparently no problems between both but not a good sign for Zverev that he can't keep coaches for a longer period.

I'm surprised he elected to go for Ferrer. Zverev is never going to be the best baseliner because he isn't athletic or fast enough to cover the baseline the way most of the elite backcourt players do. I figured he would focus heavily on his serve and try to play more aggressive points. Hugging the baseline and trying to keep up with better backcourt players who would dictate the baseline and move you around just didn't strike me as the best idea.

It's going to be interesting to see where he goes from here.

Tennis is literally the sport that is impacted most by COVID.

No fans and tournaments rely on spectators attending the games.

Having to travel around the world.

If a player gets COVID during a tournament they can’t say they will reschedule another day. That’s their tournament finished.

Vaccine can’t come quick enough, I don’t wanna see the big threes final few years destroyed by a Virus.

I adore Federer, but I can't believe he skipped the Australian Open because he didn't want to leave his family for a while, and they didn't want to sit in a room.

Two weeks with four kids in a room. I can see why his wife did not want to go.

and getting pounded by Djokovic at the end of the two weeks? Not sure the risk-reward is that good there.

Federer never beat Djoker in Melbourne...

Definitely worth it to extend the lead he already has over the Serb.

Melbourne went through a 4 month long lockdown that was one of the harshest in the world to go from 700 cases a day to eliminating it (For the record Melbourne and the whole of the UK had similar case numbers per day in july).

Tennis players can harden the feck up and be happy that after 14 days of shitness they will be in one of the most COVID free places in the world

Yes i have no sympathy with them.....to play the tournament under this circumstances is just a bad idea.

I agree completely, In Australia the individual states are having to do the quarantine due to the sheer dereliction of constitutional duty and incompetence by the tory federal government and as a result every state has different rules and regulations.

Now 72 players confined to their room. What an absolute joke this tournament has become before it's even started.

Surely they have to abandon it now?

Australia and New Zealand have dealt with Covid very well so to take their eye off the ball and allow this to happen is very surprising.

But the fact is a tournament which involves so many people travelling that far, to an island which was just starting to get back to normal should not have been allowed to proceed.

I just can't see how it can be taken seriously now when so many players won't get chance to practice - what chance do they realistically have of winning their first match? Very little I would say.

We also don't know how many more players might become infected before the scheduled start.

I think rather than play it and have a massive asterisk next to the winners' names, they should cut their losses and call it off.

Should have cancelled it.

Australia is too strict with the rules, which I don’t blame them for as the transmission is low there compared to Paris or New York where recent slams took place.

Not sure why Djokovic is getting stick for some demands.

It also isn’t fair to a lot of players as some players have got better hotels with easy gym access and better Wi-fi. Being stuck two weeks in a shitty room with crap internet in a foreign country is going to drive anybody insane.

The other slams should go on this year. By July, UK should have vaccinated more than half the population, so we should have fans for Wimbledon. French and US handled it well last year and they should be better at it second time around.

Spent a lot of time in Melbourne a few years ago, beautiful place and the tennis court is so close to the centre, can’t blame them for wanting this tournament to go on as it’s a big deal there.

Awesome city, would love to go back.
