I don’t think it’s rocket science. Shaw has always been class but had an absolute horror injury at the worst time in his development and that obviously set him back.
I don’t like making excuses for players generally but I can’t stress how much a bad injury can effect you mentally. I managed to injure myself quite badly, nowhere near as bad as Shaw, but did fracture and dislocate my knee in a tackle and it lingers in your mind constantly afterwards.
Also, Shaw is the type of player who has the “Rooney” build, being naturally stocky and barrel-shaped. The more he plays, the better he gets as his fitness improves
I think alot of people wont know the impact it has on footballers. They are human too, when you are 20 and break your leg and are out for a whole year, the impact is huge especially at the start of your career.
Then you come back and you have a manager who is not supporting you, so as a player you start to doubt yourself. The manager is sacked and a new one comes in, you start to play games but pick up injuries just when you hit form, again a mental issue because you start to think, will I ever be fit?
Luckily, he has a manager who is always believing in him, the confidence Ole is giving to Luke Shaw cannot be under estimated in this situation, because he knows to get his form back, he will make mistakes, instead of calling him out he says I want Shaw to do more of that.
Then he got Telles in, not to push Shaw out the team, to help him recover his form. Giving him a rest at the right time whilst having a very good back up.
