Lionel Messi’s Obscene Contract

Costed around 1.5 billions after taxes in 4 yrs

- €555,237,619 contract [4 years].
- €138m per season fixed + variables.
- €115,225,000 as ‘renewal fee’ just for accepting the contract.
- €77,929,955 loyalty bonus.

If anyone leaks Ronaldo’s contract too, then we’d have a proper thread.

Messi is responsible for the absolute best moments that club has had in the last 15 years. Evidently the absolute worst too.

Might as well start his own football club. Or invest somewhere... like Salford City.

On another note. A bit sad how their relationship has ended.
Denying leaking the document is stupid. How else was it leaked.

I find it interesting that they deny leaking the document, but don't deny the validity of the numbers. When I first saw those numbers, I couldn't imagine them being true. Bloody hell.

Absolute minimal version of Messi without Xavi and Iniesta

Neymar was the worlds 3rd best player when playing for Barcelona and playing with those 2 legends - he moves and he is nowhere near that Barcelona version. Same with Lionel

Balling in 2 million per week.

Griezmann's alleged contract is insane as well. He would've joined Barca for a lot less in wages and I think Messi wasn't eager to join anyone else that bad when his contract started escalating to obscene levels years ago.

This is barca fault not Messi

This whole 'holding the club to ransom' that some people are saying is nonsense

On a lesser scale it's like United being stupid to offer Rooney and DDG top wages after their prime / best and a long term contract as well which makes them hard to shift.

Messi has every right to be pissed that this was leaked especially if he knows only 5 or so people knew about it and they are all linked with barca

Watch the mes que un club cultists strongly proclaim his deep love for the club and deny any mentions of greed or money grab.

Sure, the management offered it, but at the same time he must realize that he's seriously impacting the financial situation of a struggling club he claims to love.
Here's the angle they're running with.

Well there's top wages and then there is half a billion over 4 years.

They should have let him leave. Best for everyone.

No way this is possible?!?

Genuinely why is it nonsense? He doesn't have to get that sort of money, he plays a part in the numbers. I'm not saying turn down the money obviously, but he's clearly making demands.

What's the sudden outrage?
Wasn't it widely reported at the time he signed his contract that his average salary over the whole length exceeds 100million€ per year?

Those numbers are a bit confusing. So the €115m and €78m are part of the €138m/year, right?

Wrong, they are not.
His basic salary is at least €138m excluding variables. He was paid another €115m for accepting the contract. €77m for completing the 4 years.

But Barcelona could just say..no feck off. The way Barca are run, it just seems like Messi said "I want this much" and Barcelona said yes sure, and we will spunk £400m on subpar players too!

And Barcelona don't have to keep him?

€138m (£122m) each season like a quarter of their revs on one player. I never understood why a player who was birthed at a club would take them to the cleaners so much. Does he not realise it will affect their ability to sign players and also impact their debt? In basketball we have seen players take lesser contracts so that their team has Cap space to sign a third Star player. Lebron, Steph Curry have done this. Guess Lional isn't cut from that cloth.
I guess footballers are less likely to do it as there is no salary cap. In theory they are just demanding more from the owner as opposed to demanding a greater percentage of a fixed wage bill.

That's obscene.

Clearly the board/Messi must have felt Barca could have another era of success when the deal was thrashed out, but no long-term succession planning and bankruptcy round the corner. Sorry mess, he should've left for the good of the club last summer.

God knows how much City would pay him if/when he signs. Two contracts like Mancini?

I don't see how this reflects negatively on anyone but Barcelona. It's 100% their responsibility what they decide to pay someone, and it's 100% their responsibility to own up to a contract they decided to offer. To then leak the details of the contract is petty as feck, and shows a serious lack of respect and ownership of what is mutual business agreement put down in writing (a.k.a. a contract). You'd never buy a car from a used car salesman who displayed this kind of contempt for the business process and signed agreements.

1: It seems like Barcelona just threw their star player under a bus and then publicly denied it. Wow.
2: Whatever they choose to pay him is their problem. It isn't Messi's fault it's stratospheric.
3: How did City ever think they could get his signature? Offer him all the oil they pump for the next 50 years?
