Family issues and online abuse from "Manchester United fans" killed his confidence.
Or, both were used rather crassly to deflect from the true issues at hand: his attitude and form, both of which were poor for a long time.

I agree with this and I'm not saying he should have been a starter here but there was a role for him in this team. Players like Lingard are who you keep on the bench at a top 2 club. He could come on to help protect a lead by keeping defenders pinned back, could replace Bruno in cup games and could be a good tactical option for counter-attacking gameplans.

At this point we've simply strengthened a potential top 4 rival for free!
There might have been a role for this Lingard. But we had no reason to believe that we’d see this one, primarily because of the two years that preceded it. Sometimes players need a clean break and there is no better evidence of this than Lingard at West Ham.

Where did I say it would be like for like? I'd involve him in a swap for Rice.

Also 100 million value for Rice is the stupidest thing I've ever heard in Covid times especially.

It'd be like 60 + Lingard and even that is overpaying
But Lingard is worth at least 20m and that would make it 80m for Rice.

Who knew that loaning out players rather than letting them rot not even making the subs bench could increase their value? Can't believe it took us so long to realise that. Unfortunately I can already see us rejecting £25m bid from West Ham in the summer and offering him a new ridiculous contract.

This doesn't increase his value though.... he's a not wanted United player, United never take advantage of that. £5-8m.

It's not as if he came from a small club. He grew up at United and was good under LVG and to an extent under Jose too. It's not as if he couldn't handle the pressure of playing for United.
He was decent under Van Gaal. He hardly set the world on fire.

Hundreds of players come through the ranks, how many make it at United? A tiny %.

Lingard has never produced the performance, goals and assists required of a United forward. Lukcy he lasted so long at the club.

That's not true of late whether United wants to keep the player or not if United's Valuation of player is not met they aren't moving we should be getting atleast 10-15 m minimum and that would most probably be Lingard's price tag in summer.

Can definitely see us doing that. We should take any bids for him, as he's definitely more suited to a smaller PL club. I see us rejecting bids though

Oh, look at that. People flocking to Lingard's defence as if it wasn't his fault he was such a poor footballer for us for so long. It's everyone fault but himself. How come he seemed to be the only one so adversely affected by these so called toxic Manchester United fans calling him out for being shite? Rashford gets just as much as stick as Lingard does and he put in decent performances and had a great output in terms of goals and assists. Meanwhile, Lingard went an entire year without a goal or assist. It's just revisionist bollocks.
And you just keep throwing players and managers under the bus. Without even considering impact supporters can have.
Nobody said he was good in our shirt. Atleast not last couple of years.

I said this before he left. Would still take him over Dan James.

Its just his fecking contract that has made him more disposable. :wenger:

Lingard has found his level. The fact is that he’s got a goal and assist today for a team that has thrown away a three goal lead. But because it’s a less pressurised environment, there won’t be any negativity and people will just focus on him as an individual.

It's actually unfortunate he doesn't have longer on his present deal

Great goal. He's more than good enough to have been a squad player here. Another one inexplicably frozen out by Ole.

Imagine the extremely unlikely event that WH make top 4 and we don't. Then Lingard refuses to return because he wants CL football  . The servers that host this site will literally melt down.

He is not good enough to play for Manchester United, by any stretch of the imagination.....unless of course you are happy with the team's mediocre results for the last 7 years....

Inexplicably? He was off the boil for 18+ months.

He has got the talent to be a good squad player here but let's not pretend this West Ham form is representative of his recent history with us.

No matter how good his form is now, he is still not at that level to win trophies for team. That also can be said for many of our current players.

To be honest I’d rather have Lingard as back up to Fernandes as a 10 (I don’t like Lingard out wide at all) than VDB as VDB looks utterly lost as a 10 and simply doesn’t work for us, we’d most likely get £30 million for VDB so I’d happily move him on.

He really pisses me off. How many chances did he get? Loads and loads. And what did he do with the opportunities? Nothing. Frigging jack. One goal in a million years. Hardly any assists. He is one of ours. Everyone wanted him to establish himself here. But did he? No. Then he goes to another team and all of a sudden he starts playing like a Brazilian superstar. Why? Because he just decided to try for his new club that's why.
Where was he when we needed him? Yeah he had family issues but it has been years since he played well for us.

Now we will get about 10 mill and a bag of nuts and he will play better than he every did here except that one season.

Due to off field issues.
I have no issues with him being moved on though, but his replacement is worse and that just a fact.
