A quick glance at movies from that year, the following are all better:

Good Will Hunting
LA Confidential
The Devils Advocate
Grosse Point Blank
Jackie Brown

And of course Con Air.

Edit: and Men In Black.
And Boogie Nights, which brings up the question, Heather Graham or Kate Winslet for best performances?

Better movies from 1997.

Hollywood:

Jackie Brown
Boogie Nights
Lost Highway
Hard Eight
Crash
The 5th Element
The Ice Storm

Rest of World:

The Sweet Hereafter
Princess Mononoke
Cure
Hana-bi
Perfect Blue
Maborosi
Happy Together
Funny Games
Taste of Cherry

P.s. I actually didn't mind Titanic. It's pure cinema. Total spectacle.

Better movies from 1997 alone.

Hollywood:

Jackie Brown
Boogie Nights
Lost Highway
Hard Eight
Crash
The 5th Element
The Ice Storm

Rest of World:

The Sweet Hereafter
Princess Mononoke
Cure
Hana-bi
Perfect Blue
Maborosi
Happy Together
Funny Games
Live Flesh
Taste of Cherry
I'll be a shallow fecker and bin off the RoW stuff, but none of your Hollywood ones are better for me. Crash is close, but having watched it again recently, it's really just tittilation dressed as cinema - which was the only reason it gained traction in the first place.

This isn't funny. I make worse jokes and puns, but even so.
If you hadn't made your outlandish claim about the joint best boat-based film of 1997 being the best film of the last quarter of a century, that criticism would genuinely sting.

Have you seen The Ice Storm? I only remembered it because I wanted to sound smart so went on Wiki to remember what came out in '97.

It's a really good movie that I randomly found on Prime one day. Would highly recommend to anybody reading this thread.

Edit - Don't think it's available on there anymore.

I assumed with such a generic name that I hadn't. Now I'm intrigued. It's not on iTunes either, but I can pay a fortune for a disc. I shall do so. If It's not better than the titular movie though...

The Game is a fecking terrible shout. AF1 and TLW aren't far behind, though I love both. I like The Game, but it's not a watch repeatedly.
If we're rating things based on watching it repeatedly then the greatest song of the last 25 years would be Baby fecking Shark.

Titanic is like instant noodles. You can just plow through them and not vomit, but it's not the same as a decent steak dinner. The steak dinner in this example being, quite clearly, 1997s Mouse Hunt.

Yeah it sounds a lot like a shit disaster thriller doesn't it

I wouldn't pay for it as it's definitely a watch once and never watch again sort of movie.

Without looking, 4 of those are pre 97 and the Depp films are shit. As if this is what we're using to hit on Titanic. Blimey.

Maybe dead calm is after, but it's still shit.
When did we move from "best film of the last 25 years" to "Titanic is the best Titanic film released in 1997". You're moving the goalposts more than a football pitch built on quicksand.

The movie Titanic isn't even the best movie in the movie Titanic. That award goes to the fake reporter on the TV at the start that doesn't come across as a fake reporter. Why do movies and TV shows have that problem whenever they have a scene where there's a reporter or news anchor on screen? They always look so fake. You'd think that if one industry is going to be able to replicate TV broadcasting it would be a movie production company. Well, maybe the best would be a TV broadcasting company. Fox are the worst. They have a dedicated news channel yet all their entertainment shows have really fake news reports in them. I hate foxes too, bunch of bin shagging cnuts. Can't fecking hunt them anymore on my spiked quad bike either since the salad munchers got their way. fecking EU. Glad we dumped them.

Can't remember what the feck this thread is about anymore so I'll just finish off by saying I don't like the Glazers that much.
