Just a few words from Chauvin. At least he offered his condolences to the Floyd family. For what it's worth.
Looks like the judge bottled it, when he had a chance to make a statement.

He seems to have sentenced him in accordance with the Minnesota sentencing guidelines. Gave him the overlap between the high end of unintentional 2nd degree murder and the low end of intentional 2nd degree murder

I'm assuming he will be seperated from the other prisoners. He should be fine, the prison guards will look out for their own.

It's better than what the defence were pushing for but it does beg the question as to what would he have had to do to get the full 40 years?

I'm not that clued up on law in the United States but how is he not able to give a statement at this time after sentencing ? And what could this other information he his holding back that could help put the family at ease ?
He's also on Federal charges for the Floyd case, tax evasion charges with his estranged wife and is also busted for assaulting a 14 yr old. As far as putting the family at ease, good ol' fashioned BS.
But as his mother says he's a good man.

Chauvin will become eligible for parole after 15 years.
I don't see how it is a pleasant 15. I am guessing he will need to be in pseudo solitary for most of it.

Take guts not to end myself if facing 15 in solitary
He's still going through the appeals process so he won't want to say anything that could interfere with any appeals or subsequent trials if his conviction is overturned and sent for a retrial, plus the federal charges as mentioned above.

It most definitely is. Nobody's saying she had to disown him but she certainly could have called him out for what he did. If some 5 year old kid was kicking the shit out of another kid and his/her parents did nothing or said anything about why that behaviour was wrong and unacceptable, I can't imagine that there would be anybody that didn't think that was shit parenting.
Who knows, that's probably how he was brought up.

As a law scholar I've always find these incredibly interesting to read. Seeing if the judge took a inductive, deductive or by analogy view in the judicial reasoning process.
