I mean would you really say he is an ”offender”? Clearly went for the ball to clear it. Not intentional tackle.
I’d call the clumsy fecker who nearly broke someone’s leg clearing a ball at knee height the offender mate.

Well, you can, just don't be reckless.
What was reckless about it? When you kick a ball in that position, your studs are going to be showing, there's no other way to kick that ball from the position the player was in. Then the Ukrainian guy was running into his path and they collided. Unfortunate, and that's it.

Nah, he didn't. He kicked a football cleanly. Then there was an unfortunate, accidental contact.
If you go off your feet, with your studs up to "clear the ball", then the onus is on you and you alone to ensure someone's knee isn't on the other end of your studs. A contact like that is a potential career ender and to suggest it should be waved away because the offender touched the ball first is neanderthal thinking.

VAR, the ref and the majority of sane football fans all agree that it was a foul and a blatant red card. Give your head a wobble.

Its astonishing. I’m disappointed I wasn’t able to go, but I accept that, it’s the licknof the draw. But when there are seats that could have been sold, but were empty - that’s unacceptable.

I think I’ve now got a ticket for the semi final that, if England win the next match will be part of.

whether they get there or not, I’ll go - if I can.

granted Sweden vs Ukraine is not the most attractive of games, but I bet there are people who would have gone has the system been better.
Atleast you’ve got tickets now, were they through the UEFA portal? Be a great occasion for you if England do get there (which they should).
I’ve constantly been looking to try and get semi final tickets for the other side of the draw but can’t really pay the cat 2 prices.

I think the quarantine rules for Scotland may also have had something to do with the low crowd too, if I’ve got the 5 day quarantine right.

The rules of the game:

'Any player who lunges at an opponent in challenging for the ball from the front, from the side or from behind using one or both legs, with excessive force and endangering the safety of an opponent is guilty of serious foul play.'

Sounds like you're the one more likely to have not played the game.
He doesn’t lunge at an opponent though. He clears a ball.

It’s about having an awareness of what’s around you. Not lunging in and just hoping there’s no players nearby, pleading ignorance if you catch some poor fecker.

Players can still clear the ball in the air. They just have a duty of care when they lunge, follow through, etc. It’s never been a free for all.

And off he goes with a rightful red.

That’s that.

In your opinion, if that was a forward shooting the ball towards goal would it still be a red? I don’t see it as a challenge, he was clearly clearing the ball as the Ukrainian barges into him.

He wasn't lunging at the Ukrainian player.

But that's not a red card in Sunday league!

Whatever you want to call it, a proper one shouldnt leave the other guy in a wheelchair..
So if I gently step on your toe and your toe is broken it’s an immediate red because the end result is very bad?

Maybe you should post the gif of the whole incident? Showing ONLY the impact is just dumbing down the discussion.
I would argue - unlike other decisions, a still photo is more then enough to see exactly why this is a red card. (especially as it doesn't exaggerate the force of the challenge).

Also, this was on the BBC, a gif would have taken an tiny amount of effort that i'm too lazy to muster.

By that logic you can never kick a ball in the air anymore.
I don’t think it was a red card. He cleared the ball and the player ran into the challenge. Sometimes the outcome skews people’s view but an injury can be unlucky.

Expect there’s no excessive force in that tackle. He’s gone in and won the ball and been unlucky that he’s caught the player. That should never be a red card.

I get why it's a red card, but I just don't think the punishment fits the crime. He's just clearing the ball. It wasn't even a challenge, and it certainly wasn't malicious. His motion is upward to clear the ball. It's unfortunate that the contact came when his leg was fully extended.
Exactly.

That wasn't a red. It wasn't a reckless tackle. It was a clearance that the other guy ran into.

He obviously didn't intend to make contact with his opponent like that but it's undoubtedly dangerous play. The red is justified.
Is it dangerous play? He just tries to clear the ball like happens dozens of times a game. Just because an injury occurred doesn’t change it. He had eyes only for the ball and couldn’t have known the contact was coming.

With all those injuries, suspensions and fatigue you feel like England would demolish anyone of those two teams.

Fully deserved red. You have to have some degree of control when you lunge in like that. Very clearly, he didn't.

Cannot stretch your leg out like that. If anyone tries to go for the ball on the other side, they're dead. Easiest red so far this tournament.
You are not allowed to stretch your leg out when kicking the ball anymore?

Feels to me like extra time should just be 15 minutes now.

Or just go straight to pens.

Get the odd good period but most of them are pretty forgettable nowadays and just biding time for penalties.
